Book excerpt: This study uses an integration of ethnographic and case-study qualitative analysis to help explain early adolescent and caregiver perspectives of an increased prevalence of depression in Mexican American girls. This phenomenon has been replicated in numerous other studies and it is important to obtain more information to inform understanding, enhance treatment, and initiate intervention and prevention strategies. The combination of these methods of qualitative inquiry allowed for the triangulation of multiple pieces of data including participant observation, interviewing, and archival research. Retrospective child and caregiver verbal accounts were compared with one another as well as with prior assessment of functioning and participant observation. Fourteen Mexican American or bi-ethnic early adolescents and one of their caregivers were interviewed using an unstructured interview process. Transcribed interviews were analyzed qualitatively. Findings suggest that both girls and caregivers focus on the contribution of negative life events, interpersonal relationship stress, personal characteristics, gender discrimination, and biology on the increased prevalence of depression. It is noteworthy that each of these factors is strongly correlated with the family socio-cultural environment. This study concludes with a proposal to integrate the work of Zayas, Lester, Cabassa, and Fortuna (2005) regarding Latina suicide attempts and the work of Hyde, Mezulis, and Abramson (2008) regarding the increase in girls' rates of depression during early adolescence to explain the increased prevalence of depression in Mexican American girls yielding additional affective, biological, and cognitive vulnerabilities as well as particular negative life events.

Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Within this population, many health disparities exist that include issues of gender, race, ethnicity, and culture. Research has shown the detrimental effects of MDD on an adolescent's overall mental and physical health that include lower academic performance and an increased number of daily functional impairment compared to youth without MDD. The consequences can be long lasting for many individuals. Research supports a correlation between increased knowledge and increased treatment received. Also, youth who confided in a supportive caregiver or provider were more likely to receive treatment. Objective: The aim was to develop an educational module to increase knowledge of MDD among female adolescents in hopes the information would increase the likelihood those affected would seek treatment. Methods: A videoscribe with voiceover, using Sparkol and Audacity software, was created to provide a brief overview of MDD in female adolescents. The educational module was tailored for a female youth audience. An expert panel evaluated the resultant product. Results: In general, the expert panel found the video to be an effective, well-developed, engaging, and needed educational tool to inform female youth on MDD. Conclusion: Overall, increased development of educational tools targeted at youth is needed to help combat the significant number of teenagers afflicted by MDD who remain undiagnosed and untreated. Educational tools that include multiple learning styles are more likely to reinforce knowledge. The literature review conducted supports a need for more culturally inclusive approaches in healthcare to help target those suffering from mental illness that remain under diagnosed and undertreated. However, more homogenous research is needed to identify specific cultural and geographical factors potentially influencing one's health before inclusion into educational modules to promote public health. Identification of factors using consistent research minimizes potential for misrepresentation and/or harm to a targeted group.

Book excerpt: The mental health of individuals of Mexican origin varies as a function of generational status. Studies have found that Mexican Americans tend to have more depressive symptoms than Mexican immigrants. The goal of this study was to identify possible explanations for the reported generational differences in depression among individuals of Mexican origin by examining acculturation, gender, generational status, and relative deprivation. Participants were153 women and men of Mexican origin who completed a questionnaire packet assessing demographic background, the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARSMA-11), the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-11), relative deprivation and the Revised Generalized Expectancy for Success Scale (GESS-R). Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine whether gender, generational status, acculturation level were significant predictors of depressive symptoms and optimism level. Findings suggest that low acculturation and being female were significant predictors of depressive symptoms. Relative deprivation was not a significant predictor of depressive symptoms among Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans.
