Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Teaching Reading There seems to be no scarcity of thoroughly good manual of elocution, of expositions of primary methods, and of essays on the teaching of literature. Each field of work, excepting possibly that of methods in intermediate and grammar-school reading, seems to be satisfactorily covered by the material contained in a half-dozen books, each one of which touches but a single department. There seems to have been no book which includes those things in all the departments that are of practical value to the ordinary teacher. This book is planned to meet this need. Effort has been made to cover all that is of real use to the teacher in the many lines of reading work. Effort has been made to cover all the essential elements that the good teacher of reading should know, and to omit all that is not essential. It has been attempted to put under one cover at least the minimum of what the teacher of reading should know. No attempt has been made to invent novel methods, or to make the book a dictionary of devices. No good thing has been omitted because it is old. The authors feel pleased rather then chagrined when an experienced teacher says, "That plan is not new. I have been using it for years." As a matter of fact, all of the methods explained have been tested by experience. Part Three, including the chapters on Primary Methods, Parts of a Recitation and Assignment of the Lesson, Classification of Material, Obstacles to Good Expression, Use of the Dictionary, Articulation, and the Illustrative Lessons, is the most important part of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Method in Teaching Children to Read Reading may be considered as the foundation of all our school work. If this foundation is not strong and lasting the education that is built thereon is necessarily weak and shifting. Occasionally we hear reading described as a getting of thought from the printed page, and everything is labelled reading that involves the sounding Of words, without much reference to'the comprehension Of the content, or the amount of mental activity involved. The fact is, however, that reading is not getting thought from the printed page for the very good reason that there is no thought thereon. There are symbols, words, which may or may not arouse mental activity or interest in the pupil, as his mind possesses or does not possess the ideas represented by such words and symbols. This essential truth must be fully appreciated. By the teacher Of reading who would make her work successful with children of the first school years. Teachers who have had successful experience in the work realize that primary reading presents one of the most diffi cult problems for solution in the whole range of teaching. More time and thought have been devoted to this feature of school work by practical and theoretical educators than to. Any other subject in the curriculum, and, as a natural result, we have methods and devices ad nauseam. With almost every new series of readers, some novel and only way of teaching children to read is advertised and heralded as the best, though a close examination of the content and method of many Of these readers Often disclose little of real novelty in the series beyond its name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Education The purpose of this book is to present to teachers and all persons interested in education a discussion of some of the fundamental factors in public educa tion in the light of current educational practice. The point of view is distinctly practical. No panaceas are offered and no revolutions in current methods are proposed. While the form of statement may seem dogmatic in some instances, it is hoped that this is not the case to any greater extent than would be inevitable in presenting the convictions of the writer as an outgrowth of twenty-five years of public school work. Many of the chapters are upon subjects which have been presented many times by the writer in talks and addresses to teachers and the general public. This accounts for the informal nature of many statements. It is hoped that the point of view here presented will be helpful to teachers and others interested in education in applying to the solution of present problems the conclusions obtained from a long administrative experience. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Mr. Murray A. Dalman for help in preparing the references and for the illustration of the statistical methods used in Chapter 13. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher and the School These great phases of education as found in the philoso phy, science, and art of teaching are presented in this work in such a way that helpfulness, good spirit, and personal character are brought to the front as essentials to success in the vocation, while at the same time the realities and the necessities of school instruction are so emphasized and explained that quality and quantity are both given place and prominence. Education is shown to be a gradual process of growth in certain elements that are cumulative in their nature and definite in their existence. The reader constantly con fronts the fact that the teacher has a personal work to do, and that there is no substitute for good health, good scholarship, good character, or good training. Efficiency is a logical consequence of endeavor and of fidelity to the principles of sincerity and truth. Success is a result that can be insured by acquiring the qualities essential to the teaching vocation, and the teaching of children is SO im portant and has such immense possibilities that no person should dare to undertake it without having made a prepa ration that the time and the means at hand give in, such abundance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Two texts have been written for the teacher training program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since Dr. Adam S. Bennion's Book Principles of Teaching was published, yet in spite of the fact that this book has been out of print several years so many requests for it have poured in that the General Superintendency has decided to satisfy the demand with this new edition. This book with its classic qualities in many ways fits Shakespeare's description of a beautiful woman when he said, Age cannot wither her nor custom dim her in finite variety. Anyone who knows Dr. Bennion or has read his writings knows that neither custom nor age has dimmed his infinite variety. Furthermore, a glance at the table of contents of this book will reveal the fact that the problems and principles treated herein are just as real today as they were when the text was written. This little volume is republished in the h0pe that it again will become one of the basic texts in the teacher training program and fulfill its mission as an instrument in the hands of sincere people who have the devout wish of learning how to teach the principles of the gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible. In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education. The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children. Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education. The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions. Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated. Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Teaching, in Secondary Education "The bane of high school science teaching is the notion that it must be taught differently from other subjects." These words, spoken to the author by a widely known science teacher, are in harmony with the statements of many prominent and successful teachers in other branches of high school study. Some years ago, having occasion to make a comparative study of all the available books on the teaching of secondary school subjects, the author was impressed by the striking parallel between the best of the books whenever method of instruction was treated. The chief differences were matters of omission, and the omissions in books in the same field were far from being the same. The only possible inference was that certain general principles of method are valid in all of the studies of the high school curriculum, and that the task of each teacher is not to construct his educational method regardless of these principles, but to adapt their application to his particular field. The present text is an attempt to assist the prospective or untrained teacher in a study of the principles upon which method in secondary instruction must be based. The book is a protest against formalism and mechanism, on the one hand, and unsystematic procedure on the other. The point of view is functional, in that in each step there is a procedure from discovery of aim to adaptation of process to aim. The author is also governed by the conviction that a well-planned lesson is more than a mere series of topics for study, but as a whole possesses an organic unity.
