The central essay in the collection is "Religion: A Dialogue," in which Schopenhauer presents a critique of organized religion and argues for a more individualized approach to spirituality. He also explores the concept of the divine and the nature of God, challenging traditional religious beliefs. Other essays in the collection include "The Christian System," in which Schopenhauer critiques the teachings of Christianity, and "On Books and Reading," which offers insights into Schopenhauer's views on literature and the value of reading. Overall, "The Essays of Arthur Schopenhauer - Religion: A Dialogue, etc." offers a thought-provoking exploration of philosophy and religion, and Schopenhauer's ideas continue to be influential in modern philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schopenhauer is one of the few philosophers who can be generally understood without a commentary. All his theories claim to be drawn direct from the facts, to be suggested by observation, and to interpret the world as it is; and whatever view he takes, he is constant in his appeal to the experience of common life. This characteristic endows his style with a freshness and vigor which would be difficult to match in the philosophical writing of any country, and impossible in that of Germany. If it were asked whether there were any circumstances apart from heredity, to which he owed his mental habit, the answer might be found in the abnormal character of his early education, his acquaintance with the world rather than with books, the extensive travels of his boyhood, his ardent pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and without regard to the emoluments and endowments of learning. He was trained in realities even more than in ideas; and hence he is original, forcible, clear, an enemy of all philosophic indefiniteness and obscurity.

Book excerpt: Schopenhauer, in his Dialogue on Religion, borrowing from, in admixture, David Hume's Dialogue Concerning Natural Religion (1779) and Cicero's dialogue The Nature of the Gods (45BC), employs two characters: Philalethes, the voice of philosophy, and Demopheles, the voice of the people, and thereby compares the philosophical view with the "metaphysics of the masses"; a few representative quotes: "They found it easier to burn Vanini that to confute him."-- Arthur Schopenhauer (c.1830), Dialogue on Religion (pg. 5)"You've no notion of how stupid most people are."-- Arthur Schopenhauer (c.1830), Dialogue on Religion (pg. 21); voice of Demopheles

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion a Dialogue, and Other Essays As a third edition of this little volume is called for, I have taken the opportunity of adding two more Essays: the brief dialogue on The Failure of Philosophy, and some Observa tions on The Metaphysics of Fine Art. The latter Essay Is a rendering of such portions of a chapter in the original, entitled Zur Metaphysik des Schema, as appear to be gene rally interesting and easily intelligible. The chief statement of Schopenhauer's view of Art is to be found in his large work; but as he gives a short essay in his Parerga, I have thought it well to include it in this selection. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume present carefully crafted and often creative interpretations of major Jewish texts and thinkers, as well as original treatments of significant issues in Jewish theology and ethics. Conversant with both Jewish philosophy and the methods and literature of analytic philosophy, the author frequently seeks to bring them into dialogue, and in addition taps the philosophical dimensions of Jewish law.. The book opens with a philosophical analysis of biblical narratives. It then investigates the relationship between Judaism and general culture as conceived by Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, followed by interpretations of Maimonides' moral theory and his views on human perfection. The remainder of the volume examines both critically and constructively the relationship between religious anthropology and theories of providence; the problem of evil; the challenges that neuroscience poses to religion; law and morality in Judaism; theological dimensions of 9/11; the limits of altruism; concepts of autonomy in Jewish medical ethics; and the epistemology of religious belief.

NATURE "VTATURE, natural, and the group of words derived from them, or allied to them in etymology, have at all times filled a great place in the thoughts and taken a strong hold on the feelings of mankind. That they should have done so is not surprising, when we consider what the words, in their primitive and most obvious signification, represent; but it is unfortunate that a set of terms which play so great a part in moral and metaphysical speculation, should have acquired many meanings different from the primary one, yet sufficiently allied to it to admit of confusion. The words have thus become entangled in so many foreign associations, mostly of a very powerful and tenacious character, that they have come to excite, and to be the symbols of, feelings which their original meaning will by no means justify; and which have made them one of the most copious sources of false taste, false philosophy, false morality, and even bad law. B The most important application of the Socratic Elenchus, as exhibited and improved by Plato, consists in dissecting large abstractions of this description; fixing down to a precise definition the meaning which as popularly used they merely shadow forth, and questioning and testing the common maxims and opinions in which they bear a part. It is to be regretted that among the instructive specimens of this kind of investigation which Plato has left, and to which subsequent times have been so much indebted for whatever intellectual clearness they have attained, he has not enriched posterity with a dialogue Trcpl Qvgzwq. If the idea denoted by the word had been subjected to his searching analysis, and the popular commonplaces in which it figures had been submitted to the ordeal of his powerful dialectics, his...
