Book excerpt: St. Ignatius, first-century Bishop of Antioch, called the "God-bearer," is one of the earliest witnesses to the truth of Christ and the nature of the Christian life. Tradition tells us that as a small child, Ignatius was singled out by Jesus Himself as an example of the childlike faith all Christians must possess (see Matthew 18:1-4). In Bearing God, Fr. Andrew Damick recounts the life of this great pastor, martyr, and saint, and interprets for the modern reader five major themes in the pastoral letters he wrote: martyrdom, salvation in Christ, the bishop, the unity of the Church, and the Eucharist.

Excerpt from the book: "Ignatius, who is also Theophorus, to her that has found mercy in the bounteous power of the Father most High and Jesus Christ, His only Son, to the Church that is beloved and illuminated by the will of Him that willed all things which exist, in faith and love towards Jesus Christ our God; to her that has the chief place in the district of the region of the Romans, being worthy of God, worthy of honour, worthy of congratulation, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy in purity, and holding the chief place in love, following the law of Christ, bearing the Father's name; which Church also I salute in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the Father; to them that are united in flesh and spirit with every one of His commandments, being wholly filled with the grace of God, without wavering, and strained clear from every foreign dye, warmest greeting in Jesus Christ our God without blame.I. My prayer to God has been heard, and I have been permitted to see your holy faces, so that I have gained even more than I was asking. For in bonds in Christ Jesus I hope to salute you, if it be God's will that I should be accounted worthy to reach the end. For the beginning is well ordained if I may attain the end and so receive my inheritance without hindrance. For I fear lest your very love should do me wrong. For you may easily do what you will. But for me it is difficult to attain unto God, unless you spare me."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epistles of Ignatius present a series of letters written by Ignatius of Antioch on his journey to Rome. Instead of being executed in his home town of Antioch, Ignatius was escorted to Rome by a company of ten Roman soldiers. During the journey, the soldiers allowed Ignatius to meet with entire congregations of Christians while in chains and numerous Christian visitors and messengers were allowed to meet with him. These messengers allowed Ignatius to send six letters to nearby churches, and one to Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna. Ignatius's letters bear signs of being written in great haste and without a proper plan, such as run-on sentences and an unsystematic succession of thought. Ignatius modeled his writings after those allegedly written by Paul, Peter, and John, and even quoted or paraphrased biblical entries by these apostles' works freely. Seven original epistles: The Epistle to the Ephesians The Epistle to the Magnesians The Epistle to the Trallians The Epistle to the Romans The Epistle to the Philadelphians The Epistle to the Smyrnaeans The Epistle to Polycarp, a bishop of Smyrna

Book excerpt: Godhead Theology is a study of Christian Godhead theology. Beginning during the lifetime of the apostles of our Lord, the identity of Jesus was challenged: Was He God or not? In Godhead Theology Bishop Jerry Hayes follows that debate through the first 300 years of the Church's history. Our book is in five sections: Section One is the history of the early Church from A. D. 100 to 400 and demonstrates Modalistic Monarchianism as the original orthodoxy of the Chruch; Section Two introduces the Apostolic Creed and establishes its purpose; Section Three is an affirmation of Modalistic Monarchianism; Section Four is Modalism's responses to objection from the pluralist: Trinitarians, Binitarians, Arians and Semi-Arians. Included are two comprehensive indexes: Subject Index and Scripture Index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epistles of St. Ignatius are presented here in their entirety, with historic insights imparted in an excellent translation to English by two theological scholars. Saint Ignatius of Antioch was a foremost early Christian, acceding to the role of Bishop of Antioch in circa 67 A.D. . During his tenure as bishop he authored several Epistles - or letters - to various figures of the time. Travelling widely, St. Ignatius placed much effort in spreading the influence of Christianity. His writings are notable for coining the term 'Catholic Church', which remains in use to this day. This edition includes letters which are generally considered authentic, being as they were individually referenced by the Roman historian Eusebius during the 4th century A.D. For the sake of completeness, this edition also contains several epistles whose authenticity is disputed among historians and theologians. The scholarly consensus is that these letters are spurious and were attributed to St. Ignatius long after his death.

Book excerpt: This book is an account of the cirumstances and the cultural context in which Ignatius constructed what became the historic church order of Christendom. Allen Brent defends the authenticity of the Ignatian letters by showing how the circumstances of Ignatius' condemnation at Antioch and departure for Rome, fits well with what we can reconstruct of the internal situation in the Church of Antioch in Syria at the end of the first century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch The call for a fresh edition of this little book, which is now set tip in a new form, has rendered necessary a more thorough revision of the introduction and notes than was possible in preparing it for the second edition. In the eighteen years which have elapsed since its first appearance new light has been thrown on many of the questions dealt with. Several of the notes have been te-written and also certain sections of the introduction. A new Additional Note, in place of the original Add. Note 2, has been inserted, in which the question of the Christian Ministry has been more fully dealt with. On the other hand, a few curtailments have been made elsewhere. In other respects the present edition is a reprint of the earlier edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea. Every single volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life The Epistle of St. Polycarp was a reply to one from the Philippians, in which they had asked St. Polycarp to address them some words of exhortation; to forward by his own messenger a letter addressed by them to the Church of Antioch; and to send them any epistles of St. Ignatius which he might have. Polycarp's martyrdom is described in a letter from the Church of Smyrna, to the Church of Philomelium "and to all the brotherhoods of the holy and universal Church", etc. The letter begins with an account of the persecution and the heroism of the martyrs.
