It may commemorate the building of this bridge by Claudius and its restoration by Vespasian. The via Cassia led from Rome to Arretium, Florence, and Lucca. Septempeda was a small town on a branch of this road leading from Nuceria, in Umbria, to Ancona. The milestones of the branch were numbered from Rome. The Flaminian road was found of great importance on occasion of the invasion of Italy by the forces of Vespasian under Antonius Primus.'
