Book Synopsis Environmental Persistence and Migration of Pentachlorophenol, Wood Pole Preservative, Part I by :
Download or read book Environmental Persistence and Migration of Pentachlorophenol, Wood Pole Preservative, Part I written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is widely used by the electric utility industry as a wood preservative for transmission and distribution poles. Low levels of PCP are now ubiquitous in the Canadian environment and both federal and provincial regulators have been reviewing its status and uses. Ontario Hydro, anticipating possible challenges to the continued use of PCP as a pole preservative, has initiated a study into the potential for migration of PCP away from pole installations, and has installed test poles treated with alternative preservatives. This report contains a literature review of the environmental contamination and toxicity of PCP, the degradation processes, results of fugacity modelling of PCP pathways (Level I and II), a review of the research to date on the migration of PCP from treated utility poles, and a summary of the research trends in this area.
Book Synopsis Environmental Impacts of Treated Wood by : Timothy G. Townsend

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to a heightened awareness of the possible adverse effect of treated wood, this book presents multidisciplinary research results and fundamental information on regulations, wood treatment alternatives, and documentation of environmental releases. It examines the impact of treated wood on water, soil, and organisms. Several chapters discuss ways to measure exposure and review various approaches to risk assessment and management. Case studies address human health effects of exposure. The book also presents state-of-the-art disposal technologies, new preservative compounds, and recent developments related to phase outs of certain treated wood products.

Book Synopsis The Chemistry of Wood Preservation by : R Thompson
Download or read book The Chemistry of Wood Preservation written by R Thompson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective and lasting treatment of wood against insect and fungal attack grows in importance as forestry reserves decline and as cost increases feed through to the building trade and other timber users. At the same time, environmental pressures bear ever more heavily on the types of chemicals and processes employed in the preservation industry. This book records the proceedings of an international meeting arranged to address such issues. The 15 principal chapters are based upon papers by invited experts to a combined audience of preservation practitioners and non-specialists. The chapter sequence follows the logical pattern of the conference, beginning with a review of the biological threats to be contended. There follow historical and state-of-the-art accounts of aqueous, organic solvent and non-liquid treatment processes. Preservatives increasingly must meet international product and environmental standards, which along with the related test, analytical and quality control procedures, are described and referenced. Contributors from the wood preservation industry address a range of needs associated with cost, safety and performance efficacy, not neglecting a search for a better understanding of the finer chemical mechanisms involved. Remaining problems are outlined in strategies for further research and development. Book Synopsis Wood preservation with chemicals by : Esa Salminen
Download or read book Wood preservation with chemicals written by Esa Salminen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic Council of Ministers, the BAT Group under the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production, has requested the consultant to prepare a report on Best Available Techniques (BAT) in wood preservation with chemicals in the Nordic countries. The Nordic wood preserving industry produces around 2.1 million m³ of impregnated wood per year, which is about one third of the total supply of pressure-treated wood in Europe. This report describes the present status of the used technologies, their emissions and impacts on the environment and technologies that can be considered BAT. The report will also be used as an input from the Nordic countries to the EU process under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) for preparation of the BAT Reference Document for preservation of wood and wood products with chemicals (WPC BREF) which is foreseen to start in 2014.
Book Synopsis Development of Commercial Wood Preservatives by : Tor P. Schultz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood products used in exterior applications must be protected against biodeterioration. Traditionally, wood products used CCA or the older inexpensive organic biocides, but environmental, disposal and governmental regulations have resulted in a rapid and dramatic worldwide shift. This book covers the many steps involved in developing a wood preservative and gives overviews on modified wood, wood deterioration, worldwide trends in wood protections, and mold in homes.

Book Synopsis Prediction of the Environmental Fate of Chemicals by : Y. Samiullah
Download or read book Prediction of the Environmental Fate of Chemicals written by Y. Samiullah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern over the effects of chemicals in the environment has been increasing for many years. Environmental contamination by DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, mercury, PCBs, organotins and many other sub stances are all part of the public consciousness and have led to widespread attention to this topic. Some of the concerns have arisen because human health has been affected when contaminants have been consumed via the food chain-for instance in the case of 'Minimata disease' in Japan. In other cases, direct effects on other components of ecosystems have given cause for alarm. The toxic effects which any chemical can cause are a function of exposure and innate toxicity, i.e. of the ability to reach in sufficient quantity a site where a biological process can be disrupted and of the tendency to cause disruption when it gets there. The processes by which chemicals reach sites of toxic action are the subject of this book, and are a fundamental consideration in ecotoxi cology. When a chemical enters the environment e.g. via a spillage or in an effluent, it is potentially subject to a wide variety of processes which may eliminate it from the environment completely, modify it into a more or less harmful substance, or transfer it to another part of the environment. The processes involved are complex and highly variable, but it is essential to increase our understanding of them.
