The Corporation of London has too long, perhaps undeservedly, been regarded as an organization for eating and drinking, and taxing its fellow-citizens. It has now nobly redeemed its character. If these charges were ever true, they are true no longer. The Corporation now stands forth as the Protector of the People's property, and will be honoured hereafter by all good and just men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist, Vol. 8 "Insects are usually pointed out to us by those who are about us as ugly, filthy, and noxious creatures; and the whole insect-world - butterflies, perhaps, and some few others excepted - are devoted by one universal ban to proscription and execration, as fit only to be trodden under our feet and crushed; so that, often, before we can persuade ourselves to study them we have to remove from our minds prejudices deeply rooted and of long standing." - Kirby And Spence. "The importance of insects to us, both as sources of good or evil, I shall endeavour to prove at large hereafter; but for the present, taking this for granted, it necessarily follows that the study of them must also be important: for when we suffer from them, if we do not know the cause, how are we to apply a remedy that may diminish or prevent their ravages? Ignorance in this respect often occasions us to mistake our enemies for our friends, and our friends for our enemies; so that when we think to do good we only do harm, destroying the innocent and letting the guilty escape. Many such instances have occurred. Middleton, in his 'Agriculture of Middlesex, ' speaking of the plant-louse that is so injurious to the bean, tells us that the ladybirds are supposed either to generate or to feed upon them. Had he been an entomologist he would have been in no doubt whether they were beneficial or injurious; on the contrary, he would have recommended that they should be encouraged as friends to man, since no insects are greater devourers of plant-lice." - ID. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, 1871-72, Vol. 8 It is expedient to have no more synonymy, a word which has now lost all its original meaning. When, out of chaos, synonymy was born, it served a very useful object. Then, six persons called the same insect by as many different names, because they used different books. All the descriptive works on entomology were costly, and few people could possess more than their one author. Then, entomologists of different countries knew nothing of each other s books, and there was real confusion in the names of species and of genera. In short, the error among entomologists was then not communis the majority knew nothing of any other name than that which they themselves used. The case is now so altered, that synonymy does not any longer answer its former function. All entomologists use one name in the vast majority of cases. There is no real confusion, even if different names are used; as, in the very few cases of doubt, entomologists know and use both the names Doom and its synonyms), and no list-writer would be much of a guide in such contested cases as those. The evil in fact now is felt in quite the opposite direction to that in which it once showed itself. Of old, entomologists knew one name only and held to it right or wrong: now they are never satisfied. If a name has been long and generally in use, it is all the more eligible, the writers seem to think, as a victim to the shrine of This restlessness is utterly absurd but the only cure for it is a good broad rule, that entomologists will henceforth ignore all names but those in use now. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 8: May to December, 1896 At the end of another volume we again tender our heartiest thanks do our subscribers and contributors. The current volume of the magazine has, like its two immediate predecessors, been published in eight months. In spite of this, extra pages have had to be given to clear off accumulated material, and, at the present time, thanks to our contributors, we have a large number of important articles on hand, which will be published in due course. As we announced, however, on the completion of the last volume, we shall revert to the old monthly mode of publication with Volume ix. We much regret that we are not able at the present rate of subscription to permanently enlarge the magazine. We have attempted to produce a fair share of readable matter for the more scientific entomologist and for the field worker. "Field Work Notes" for the various months will be continued in the next volume, and several well-known entomologists have also kindly promised their help in various directions. Our aim is to make the magazine a living record of what is actually being done in the various strata of the entomological world. We trust we have in some measure succeeded. Our best thanks must be again given to Mr. G. B. Routledge, F.E.S., who has for the third time taken charge of the Special Index. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist, 1891, Vol. 24I AM surprised to find that Mr. Cockerell should have found it necessary to defend the views he put forward in a former paper (entom. Xxii. 177 as to the possibility of the sex being determined in the embryo by external influences, especially food. The hypothesis is now very generally accepted by biologists in relation to animals in general, and may be found stated very clearly and fully in a most interesting volume of the International Science Series, The Evolution of Sex, ' by Profs. Geddes and Thomson. Mr. Wailly will find in Chap. IV. A reference to Lepidoptera, Mrs. Trent's experiments and Mr. Gentry's Opinion being cited. A very stron case is made out in favour of the contention that difl'erences 0 nutrition, in conjunction with other conditions of environment (chiefly bearing on assimilation probably) in the larval or embryonic state, determine the sexual distinctions. Evidence bearing on the subject is adduced from the life-history of the tadpole, bee, aphis, and certain arthropods. I think most practical entomologists' experience will, in a more or less degree, bear out the theory. I venture to note one or two observations of my own. I have observed in the South of France and in Italy the dwarfing of L. Icam and astrarche, resulting from the stunted condition of the food-t produced by the climate and dry soil, and not the less striking is the preponderance of males over females in such localities.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 6: January to August, 1895 Nothwithstanding the increased frequency of publication, we have found it impossible to prevent the accumulation of material at a rate in excess of our power of using it. This is not an unmixed evil, for it has relieved us of the difficulty, that existed not many years ago, of obtain ing a sufficiency of interesting matter wherewith to fill our entomological magazines. At the same time, it points to the necessity for a continu ance of the policy of completing a volume in eight months. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist, 1894, Vol. 27: An Illustrated Journal of General Entomology The path of discovery is often a very tortuous one, and when a discovery can only be made by a series of observations, the fact that these observations are made singly, and only form a series when collected together, is often a real difficulty in the path of the philosophic student. Some try, indeed, to generalize from every individual fact, but surely they impede thelr own progress thereby, and nothing can be more distressing than to see great powers misapplied, in the vain attempt construct theories, for which the facts are not accumulated. - stainton. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entomologist, Vol. 2 Like Rip van Winkle, it awoke after a twenty years' slum ber, rubbed its eyes, and stepped forth amongst its living namesakes with all the formality of its pristine appearance. A few months have altered this, and the Entomologist' of '65, although commenced with due solemnity, is as different from the 'entomologist' of as good sound Saxon is from the canine Latin in which 1 formerly had the misfortune to rejoice. It became obvious that I had mistaken my calling. 1 had no skill in that very peculiar language which, like the Rev. Edward Irving's, owes its popularity to its obscurity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist, 1890, Vol. 23: An Illustrated Journal of General Entomology It is interesting to contemplate a tangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects itting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to re ect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent upon each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us. These laws, taken in the largest sense, being Growth With Reproduction; Inheritance which is almost implied by reproduction Variability from the indirect and direct action of the conditions of hfe, and from use and disuse: a Ratio of Increase so high as to lead to a Struggle for Life, and as a consequence to Natural Selection, entailing Divergence of Character and the Extinction of less-improved forms. Thus, from the war of Nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is a grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved. - Dxnwm.
