Book excerpt: Striking toward peace and harmony the human being is ceasely torn apart in personal, social, national life by wars, feuds, inequities and intimate personal conflicts for which there seems to be no respite. Does the human condition in interaction with others imply a constant adversity? Or, is this conflict owing to an interior or external factor of evil governing our attitudes and conduct toward the other person? To what criteria should I refer for appreciation, judgment, direction concerning my attitudes and my actions as they bear on the well-being of others? At the roots of these questions lies human experience which ought to be appropriately clarified before entering into speculative abstractions of the ethical theories and precepts. Literature, which in its very gist, dwells upon disentangling in multiple perspective the peripeteia of our life-experience offers us a unique field of source-material for moral and ethical investigations. Literature brings preeminently to light the Moral Sentiment which pervades our life with others -- our existence tout court. Being modulated through the course of our experiences the Moral Sentiment sustains the very sense of literature and of personal human life (Tymieniecka).

Book excerpt: Bestselling author of Geography of Bliss returns with this funny, illuminating chronicle of a globe-spanning spiritual quest to find a faith that fits. When a health scare puts him in the hospital, Eric Weiner-an agnostic by default-finds himself tangling with an unexpected question, posed to him by a well-meaning nurse. "Have you found your God yet?" The thought of it nags him, and prods him-and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that. Weiner, a longtime "spiritual voyeur" and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he's never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, undertaking a worldwide exploration of religions and hoping to come, if he can, to a personal understanding of the divine. The journey that results is rich in insight, humor, and heart. Willing to do anything to better understand faith, and to find the god or gods that speak to him, he travels to Nepal, where he meditates with Tibetan lamas and a guy named Wayne. He sojourns to Turkey, where he whirls (not so well, as it turns out) with Sufi dervishes. He heads to China, where he attempts to unblock his chi; to Israel, where he studies Kabbalah, sans Madonna; and to Las Vegas, where he has a close encounter with Raelians (followers of the world's largest UFO-based religion). At each stop along the way, Weiner tackles our most pressing spiritual questions: Where do we come from? What happens when we die? How should we live our lives? Where do all the missing socks go? With his trademark wit and warmth, he leaves no stone unturned. At a time when more Americans than ever are choosing a new faith, and when spiritual questions loom large in the modern age, Man Seeks God presents a perspective on religion that is sure to delight, inspire, and entertain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is time taking us? Are we all just waiting in line to die, or is there more to life's story than this? What is time? Where does it go, and where has it been? When did it start, and how shall it all end? Who created time, and for what purpose? Why did time start, and why are our days measured by it? If we reach the end without understanding these things here on the earth, our time and lives will be wasted, and everything we have done will have been done in vain. All of our works and futile efforts will die with us, and we will, in a sense, have failed in our existence. To fulfill our purpose in life, it is imperative that we live with the end in mind. The mastermind behind this concept of time has set everything into motion, and every scene unfolds at His directive. He is the author and producer of this story called life. It is a story of love, failure, repentance, judgement, war, peace, forgiveness, redemption, sacrifice, resurrection, and ultimately reconciliation. It is our story-the human story, and the producer of this story, God, knows exactly where time is taking us and when. 5780-5781 We are now entering a season where time and events are converging. The clock is ticking, and a new day is on the horizon. Everything seems as though it is falling apart, but in fact from God's perspective, everything is coming together for the fulfillment of His plan to restore the Earth and His creation. God has not changed His plan; He just gave it time to develop. The proclivity of time explains the nature and purpose of time, captures unforgettable moments in time for reflection, analyzes controversial truth for where we are at this moment in time, and provides a road map to where time is taking us. After all, time is the thing that keeps us here, and it shall be the thing that takes us away. It is a journey we all must take in order to reach our destination. It is my hope that within these pages, we will come to fully understand time's role in facilitating every aspect of our lives, and how God uses time and seasons to bring His plan for humanity and the Earth together. Darnell Whittington has served as an Educational Administrator for many years in Monroe, Louisiana. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He has authored several books, served on the Board of Directors for The Assembly Church of West Monroe and The Voice Network Television station, but his greatest accomplishments are accepting Jesus Christ and building a family which includes Justice and Anita Chatzistrati Whittington.

Book excerpt: Is the Devil a Myth? Is a book by C. F. Wimberly. It delves into the roots of evil and touches upon early demonology. Excerpt: ""Lucifer, son of the morning," an archangel, a great being, created in holiness, standing near the Throne of God. His name means "light bearer," indicative of his glorious office. We can scarcely imagine such honour, such power, such distinction. Just what the high-calling of "light bearer" was, as it was performed under the highest commission in the universe, the Book fails to tell us; but the office of Lucifer was surely the peer of Michael or Gabriel, if not above them in rank. Brilliancy and splendour radiated from his person."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a day when the church's voice is increasingly silenced by the world's opposition, a call to stand for the good fight of faith must be made. But in God's call to His people, He asks them to stand up by first kneeling down. In an address to Solomon, God said: "If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves...then will I hear from Heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land." The first motion toward the awesome, sovereign God is downward, in humility. The title of the book, Before Honor, is taken from a verse from Solomon's Proverbs: "Before honor is humility." Before a hearing from heaven and preceding any honor to God or from Him is humility. The author of the book confirms this principle of humility with a plethora of Biblical evidence. Using a Biblical overview, the writer demonstrates the continuity of the theme from Genesis to Revelation, thus supporting the claim that humility is a fundamental attribute of God and the only attitude a follower can have that exalts and glorifies Christ. Though pride, the inverse of humility, is a destructive force, humility is a beneficent one. Humility is the hope of revival for all God's people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Author's Preface: It could be this octogerian's last book and there were several things I wanted to do. One was to provide a primer in covenant theology. Another was to make more accessible the gist of some of my previous biblio-theological studies and to do so in a form serviceable to a wider readership than most of my publications. The major move in this democratic direction was to enliven the analysis of the covenants by introducing the series of covenant administrations within the intriguing story line of Har Magedon, the mountain of God. Extending as it does from creation to consummation, the tale of Har Magedon readily accommodates the total history of the covenants . . . Moreover, quite apart from such considerations the current state of secularized and dispensational versions of Armageddon (fantastic fiction all) makes a review of the biblical Har Magedon motif timely. Though the covenants remain the theological foundation and heart of the matter, by its adoption as our narrative framework, Har Magedon becomes the dominant surface theme. As we track this theme through the Scriptures we discover a recurring pattern, an eschatological megastructure that appears in each of the typological world ages culminating respectively at mounts Ararat and Sinai/Zion and then once again, climactically, in the antitypical New Covenant age. This Har Magedon paradigm, which shapes our telling of the covenantal tale, consists in the following complex of elements: establishment of a kingdom covenant by the Lord of Har Magedon; a meritorious accomplishment by the covenant grantee, triumphant in the Har Magedon conflict; a common grace interim before the coming of the covenanted kingdom; an antichrist crisis; consummation of the Glory-Kingdom through a last judgement victory of the covenant Lord in a final battle of Har Magedon. If only in condensed, digest fashion the present work is thus a comprehensive biblio-theological survey of the kingdom of God from Eden to the New Jerusalem.
