Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twilight of British rule in India, a little-known civil servant, Sir Benegal Narsing Rau (1887–1953), was sought after by the ruling elites—both British and Indian—for his immense knowledge of the nature and working of the constitutions of the world as well as his reputation for being just and impartial between competing political interests. Yet, Rau’s ideas and his voice have largely been forgotten today. By examining Rau’s constitutional ideas and following their trajectory in late colonial Indian politics, this book shows how the process of the making of the Indian constitution was actually never separated from the politics of conflict that dominated this period. This book demonstrates that it is only by foregrounding this political history that we can simultaneously remember Rau’s critical contributions as well as understand why he was forgotten in the first place.

Book Synopsis Political Transition and Development Imperatives in India by : Ranabir Samaddar
Download or read book Political Transition and Development Imperatives in India written by Ranabir Samaddar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the transition from colonial to constitutional rule in India, and the various configurations of power and legitimacies that emerged from it. It focuses on the developmental structures and paradigms that provided the circumstances for this transition, and the establishment of the post-colonial state. Different articles interrogate the idea of liberal constitutionalism, the spaces it provides for rights and claims, the assumptions it makes about citizenship and its attendant duties, and the assumptions it further makes about what it can, or has to, become in the particular situation of India. The book locates these questions in the reconfiguration of society, power, and the economy since the shift in the identity of the state after Independence, and deals with issues of constitution-making in a historical and political setting and its outcomes, especially the centrality of law and legalisms, in shaping civil society. With a companion volume on the transition to a constitutional form of governance and the consequent moulding of the citizens, this book emphasises continuity and change in the context of the movement from the colonial to the constitutional order. It will be of interest to those in politics, history, South Asian studies, policy studies, and sociology.

Book Synopsis Chandernagore by : Sailendra Nath Sen
Download or read book Chandernagore written by Sailendra Nath Sen and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chandernagore, a former French possession near Kolkata, has experienced several changes in fortune, moving from being the hub of revolutionary activities against British imperialists to being subjugated by the French. Utilizing diverse original sources from India and France, as well as the private papers of Debendra Nath Dash, a key figure in Chandernagore politics, this book examines the unfolding events in the struggle of the people of Chandernagore against French colonial rule. It situates the events within the broader context of other French settlements--Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam--with Pondicherry being pivotal to French imperialism in India. The struggle against French tutelage was fought in a non-violent manner through a process of negotiations that led to a peaceful referendum in 1949, the first of its kind in India. This book is a ground-breaking research work on Chandernagore--a town on which there is still little published material available--and provides important scholarship in the field of the history of West Bengal.
