It is generally entered upon in our acado mies and colleges with reluctance, and relinquished with out regret. This aversion is not limited to the idle, but includes those, who know the value of time and the impor tance of mental improvement. The objections against the Philosophy of the Mind. Which have in a great measure given rise to this prejudice, may be principally summed up in two particulars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intellectual Principles, or Elements of Mental Science: Intuitions Thoughts Beliefs The following work respects only Knowledge, but it includes every kind, from the lowest to the highest, of ourselves and of every other object. Men have not to learn from books, or any testimony, what is to be found in their own minds. This may be best known by observing and considering what each person feels and perceives within. While there is mystery everywhere, within and without, there is much that is clear and sure, interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy Having been intended for oral delivery, they were, in many respects, modified by the circumstances of their origin. Hence, illustrations have been introduced more freely than would other wise have seemed necessary. In preparing them for the press, however, I was led to consider the class of persons for whose use they were principally designed. I remembered the dith culty of fixing definitely in the mind of the pupil the nature and limits of subjective truth; and therefore allowed my instruo tions to retain in general the form which they had previously assumed. Whether I have in this respect judged wisely, it is not for me to determine. I have not entered upon the discussion of many of the topics which have called into exercise the acumen of the ablest meta physicians. Intended to serve the purposes of a text-book, it was necessary that the volume should be compressed within a compass adapted to the time usually allotted to the study of this science in the colleges of our country. I have, therefore, attempted to present and illustrate the important truths in intel lectual philosophy, rather than the inferences which may be drawn from them, or the doctrines which they may presuppose. These may be pursued to any length, at the option of the teacher. If I have not entered upon these discussions, I hope that I have prepared the way for their more ample and truthful develop ment. It has been my desire to render this work an aid to mental improvement. For this purpose, I have added practical sug gestions on the cultivation of the several faculties. Earnest minded young men frequently err in their attempts at self-im provement. It has seemed to me, therefore, that a work of this kind would be manifestly imperfect, did it not directly, as well as indirectly, aid the student in his efforts to discipline and strengthen his intellectual energies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of ScienceThe papers which make up this volume have been selected because, although they deal with different aspects of various scientific ideas, yet they do illus trate, more or less, one point of View. That point of View may be described, perhaps as aesthetic, but rather better as humanistic. Scientific ideas have a history; they arose to satisfy certain human needs; to see them in their context is to see them as part of the general intellectual and emotional life of man. What they exist to do they do better than does any thing else, and the needs they satisfy are not peen liar to scientific specialists. These papers try to Show one or two of the many reasons why, for people who are not specialists as well as for those who are, science may be interesting.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Europe witnessed an extraordinary flowering of discoveries and innovations. This study, beginning with the Dutch-invented telescope of 1608, casts Galileo's discoveries into a global framework. Although the telescope was soon transmitted to China, Mughal India, and the Ottoman Empire, those civilizations did not respond as Europeans did to the new instrument. In Europe, there was an extraordinary burst of innovations in microscopy, human anatomy, optics, pneumatics, electrical studies, and the science of mechanics. Nearly all of those aided the emergence of Newton's revolutionary grand synthesis, which unified terrestrial and celestial physics under the law of universal gravitation. That achievement had immense implications for all aspects of modern science, technology, and economic development. The economic implications are set out in the concluding epilogue. All these unique developments suggest why the West experienced a singular scientific and economic ascendancy of at least four centuries.
