Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Economics This book has been written in response to a demand for a somewhat shorter and more elementary work than the Introduction to the Study of Economics, which the author brought out in 1897. In order to meet this demand, it was necessary to make a substantially new book, in which the substance of doctrine and the gen eral groundwork remain the same, but the method of treating most subjects has been more or less radically altered. Less space has been devoted to purely theo retical questions and more descriptive and illustrative material has been presented. It is hoped that the present treatise will meet the needs of a relatively short course for beginners in eco nomics. As the work stands, it is probably extensive enough for the longest courses now given in secondary schools. If it is found too long for some of the shorter courses, the instructor can easily adapt it to the needs of his class by making a few omissions. The first chap ter can be treated in an introductory talk or lecture on the first day that the class meets; and the tenth and fifteenth chapters, treating, as they do, topics that are seldom discussed at length in an elementary work, can be readily omitted. With a few changes of this sort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics This book is designed to be an introduction to the science of economics. Technical discussions and difficult terminology have been avoided. The author has endeavored to write a book of practical value to the student, but is convinced that any practical work must be founded upon sound theory. There are many economic questions upon which there may be differences of opinion. Both sides of most disputed questions are given. Students should be encouraged to draw their own conclusions after weighing the evidence. While the experience of most teachers of economics has convinced them that one book should be followed as a guide, students should read references in other works. Fortunately there are many excellent books - perhaps too difficult in parts for the beginner - containing many chapters that can be read with profit by even an immature student. Among many works suitable for reference purposes the following are especially recommended: Bulloch, Introduction to the Study of Economics; Carver, Principles of Political Economy; Ely, Outlines of Economics; Fetter, Principles of Economics; Seager, Introduction to Economics; and Turner, Introduction to Economics. Grateful acknowledgment is made to the publishers and authors of copyrighted books for permission to use selections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Political Economy This work is intended primarily for the use of students. The leading principles are stated, as far as possible, without the introduction of controversial matter. At the same time, throughout the work indications are given of the points still in dispute and of the difficulties involved in the further development of the principles and theories of which an elementary exposition is given. The work is based on the "Principles of Political Economy" (3 vols.) by the same author. It is, however, not simply an abstract. In the first four books the material used has been almost entirely recast. In the last book it was thought better to omit certain topics altogether rather than attempt any further condensation of the argument. In order to keep the volume within reasonable limits the greater part of the historical matter which forms a characteristic feature of the larger work has been excluded, though the results of the application of the historical method have been retained. Little space also was available for the history of economic thought and doctrines. In the text, however, the importance of these and other omitted topics has been emphasised, and the student is recommended throughout to supplement his reading by reference to special works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Political Economy Some months ago, the present publishers of Dr. Wayland's book requested the writer to make a revision Of that work. Fully' believing that the doctrines and the general aim and methods of that eminent instructor on this subject were sound and wise, and that the press ing want of the class-room in our institutions of higher education, was not fully met by any one of the excellent treatises before the public, be consented and assumed the undertaking. It was soon found, however, that a mere revision of the book would not accomplish the desired object. Comparatively few pages of the original work could be used as they stood. In the result, while scarcely any change has been made in the opinions presented, the arrangement and the forms of statement have been quite generally recast with considerable condensation and many needed additions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics: With Special Reference to American Conditions, for the Use of High Schools This simplicity manifests itself chiefly in two directions. In the first place, emphasis has been laid upon the con crete and descriptive side of economics. Great attention, therefore, has been paid to the subject of the production of wealth, and much material of an industrial character has been added. In the second place, each chapter is preceded by an outline of its contents and followed by a series of questions which bear on the general topic of the chapter. In those schools where only a very limited amount of time can be devoted to the study of economics, it will be found possible to omit or summarize certain parts of the book according to the special needs of the students, or the particular inclination of the teacher. To those who have come under the inspiring influence of Professor Simon N. Patten, it is almost superfluous to acknowledge here the debt of obligation embodied in this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economics The principal changes in this edition are the following: dividing the chapters so as to make 37 instead of 16 as in the fourth edition; elaborating two or three chapters which were little more than lecture notes; abridging two or three discus sions which belonged rather to monograph literature; dimin ished use of formal principles; increased use of concrete illus trations and a general softening of the style. Disproportio-n and inconsistency have been diminished, but not yet removed. The most significant single change is the starting of the Crit ique of the Present Order with Distribution rather than Pro duction, - a change which naturally led to a complete reorgan ization of this discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy The successive French editions of the work have undergone numerous and important changes, - changes not so much in the general scope and spirit of the book as in the manner of presenting certain sections of the subject. The fundamental purpose has remained precisely the same: to give the reader a plain statement of the accepted principles of economics a summary of the unsettled problems of the science, and a clear, brief, and impartial outline of the various solutions that have been proposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Principles of Economics: Together With a Short Sketch of Economic History First of all, it has been deemed well to present to the stu dent in the opening chapter an idea of what the science is, and to show him, as is being done in the present chapter, what are the main topics with which the science is con cerned. In another introductory chapter there is pre sented a discussion of some of the fundamental institutions in our social order. In the second place, it is thought advisable to give in a few chapters a skeleton outline of the economic history of mankind, with more particular attention to those late developments in English and American economic history which have given rise to existing economic conditions. This part of the subject is often omitted from elementary text-books, and therefore a word of explanation is here in place.
