Book Synopsis The Eighth Sacrament by : Mathew John
Download or read book The Eighth Sacrament written by Mathew John and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carefully uncovers the beauty of the sacraments of the Church. It tells us how God, the master artist, who conceives the design of a human being, His masterpiece, first in His mind makes use of the sacrament of Matrimony as a canvas to realize the design with the cooperation of men and women as His coartists. Though the design God had in His mind was perfect, the actual work is imperfect because His coartists who physically portrayed the masterpiece themselves are imperfect. But God transforms human beings, over the course of time, into a masterpiece through the sacraments of the Church. God calls a person by his name in the sacrament of Baptism, which is the very first divine touch of God upon the soul of an individual; the sacrament of Reconciliation is an ongoing bathing in the mercy of God; the Lord, in the Eucharist, feeds us with the divine food and drink for the journey, and by eating the body and drinking the blood of the Lord, human becomes divine; God gives us higher power by the sacrament of Confirmation, but it also challenges one to live according to the Spirit; the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is the last touch of God upon the soul of His masterpiece; God calls men into Holy Orders who, like the men and women in marriage, cooperate with God in carving a person into a masterpiece by administering the sacraments of the Church. As the author unveils the striking beauty of the sacraments, he also invites readers to delve deep into them to explore the hidden and untapped riches that will change one's life forever.

Book Synopsis Martin Luther and the Seven Sacraments by : Brian C. Brewer
Download or read book Martin Luther and the Seven Sacraments written by Brian C. Brewer and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to Martin Luther's sacramental theology addresses a central question in the life of the church and in ecumenical dialogue. Although Luther famously reduced the sacraments from seven to two (baptism and the Lord's Supper), he didn't completely dismiss the others. Instead, he positively recast them as practices in the church. This book explores the medieval church's understanding of the seven sacraments and the Protestant rationale for keeping or eliminating each sacrament. It also explores implications for contemporary theology and worship, helping Protestants imagine ways of reclaiming lost benefits of the seven sacraments.
Book Synopsis Sacraments A Misnomer by : Ian Traill D.Min

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term, “Sacrament”[1] for the Christians has haunted the Church from the emergence of the Roman Catholic Church in the third century when Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. They viewed a sacrament as a religious rite of passage, as a way of receiving God's grace. It has been and is seen by certain parts of the Church as a means by participating in or working for God’s favour. These rites of passage established by the priests of the Roman Catholic Church, have caused the faith of many to suffer shipwreck. Religious Sacraments are a set of rituals or ceremonies held by the traditional Church seen as a means of gaining God’s love and grace by conferring some specific grace upon those who receive them. The list is as follows; baptism, confirmation, communion (Eucharist), penance (confession), holy orders (setting people aside for ordination to ministry), matrimony, and the anointing of the sick. Today we may even see in the Pentecostal Church another sacrament of “the offering” in order to gain God’s grace and love. The Roman Catholic Church believes that the Sacraments ‘are the second part of God's way of salvation to us.[2]’ In addition to the previous statement the Roman Catholic Church believes, ‘that the Roman Catholic Church is the universal sacrament of salvation…, …Anticipating the Second Vatican Council, the great theologian Henri de Lubac depicted the Church as the “Sacrament of Christ”[3]’. Thus we conclude that the traditional Church view Sacraments as a way of salvation through observance of works or allegiance. It is my view that the sacraments listed in the previous paragraph as a way of receiving God's grace and love are a misnomer an inaccurate understanding of the Bible, and they are heresies, because they are used as a way of saying we can gain more grace from God by doing them, instead of doing them in remembrance, to signify a new stage in spiritual life and in obedience to a command. My understanding of the word, “heresy”, unlike the traditional Church’s view, and that is it is a teaching that conflicts with what the Bible says. You may say, “Where do you find the word, “sacrament” in Scripture? Since it is not there it is surely permissible for anyone to choose to put any interpretation on it.” My answer to that is, ‘Correct we do not find it in the Bible. But it is how the traditional Church has used this terminology and interpretation to control or even hold some in fear of not receiving salvation through justification by faith, but the questionable teaching of following some traditions to gain grace, needs to be addressed’. Therefore it is my aim in this book to show that once we see that God has chosen a person or group in each generation in Church history to bring a certain perspective to the overall theology. Each perspective was and is only a stepping stone for the next generation to stand on. We must stop thinking of doctrine as a closed door and move onto the unity of faith and not the unity of dogma. In this book we will use the canon of Scripture which is commonly known as the Protestant Canon. I have chosen this one to use as it is the oldest accepted canon. It had been accepted by the Catholic Council of Carthage, Africa in A.D. 397. The word, “Protestant” may seem to be an anachronism, since “Protestantism” per se refers to the time of the Reformation in the 13th century. If we believe a doctrine, we need to be brave enough to publish it in some form, but it is from this point onwards that it is open to investigation and possible rebuttal. But let us not shrink away from this type refutation but continue to investigate what we believe. In this book we will study what I believe is the only act that makes God happy with us and we will reflect upon what does please Him too.

Book Synopsis The Sacraments of the Law and the Law of the Sacraments by : Judith Hahn
Download or read book The Sacraments of the Law and the Law of the Sacraments written by Judith Hahn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Sacramentality' can serve as a category that helps to understand the performative power of religious and legal rituals. Through the analysis of 'sacraments', we can observe how law uses sacramentality to change reality through performative action, and how religion uses law to organise religious rituals, including sacraments. The study of sacramental action thus shows how law and religion intertwine to produce legal, spiritual, and other social effects. In this volume, Judith Hahn explores this interplay by interpreting the Catholic sacraments as examples of sacro-legal symbols that draw on the sacramental functioning of the law to provide both spiritual and legal goods to church members. By focusing on sacro-legal symbols from the perspective of sacramental theology, legal studies, ritual theory, symbol theory, and speech act theory, Hahn's study reveals how law and religion work hand in hand to shape our social reality.
Book Synopsis The Sacramental Mystery by : Paul Haffner
Download or read book The Sacramental Mystery written by Paul Haffner and published by Gracewing Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven sacraments lie at the centre of Christian life and experience, for here God the Holy Trinity touches human lives and hearts. This book is one of the few at the present time to offer a global synthesis of the main themes in the sacramental mystery in which the human and divine, the material and the spiritual realms are intimately intertwined. Paul Haffner outlines how the sacraments are the chief means in the Church through which God's people are reconciled to the Father, through His Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. The book illustrates classical issues like the conditions for the validity and the efficacy of the sacraments, as well as the minister, recipient and effects of these sacred mysteries; it deals with particular topics like the necessity of Baptism, the sacrificial character of the Eucharist, and the nature of marriage. As he examines each sacrament in turn, the author also explores how new ecumenical questions affect Christian sacramental understanding. 'I warmly commend this work on the subject of sacramental theology' Archbishop Csaba Ternyak Secretary of the Vatican Congregation of the Clergy Paul Haffner is lecturer in systematic and dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical Lateran University, the Pontifical Athenaeum 'Regina Apostolorum' and the Pontifical Institute 'Regina Mundi' in Rome. His publications include 'The Mystery of Creation', 'The Mystery of Reason' and 'The Mystery of Mary' - all also published by Gracewing.
Book Synopsis Ecology, Liturgy, and the Sacraments by : Irwin, Kevin W.
Download or read book Ecology, Liturgy, and the Sacraments written by Irwin, Kevin W. and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the principle that the liturgy is the enactment of “the work of our redemption” through the raising up, acknowledging and revering elements of the cosmos, the earth, and our “fellow creatures” in our common home. It is inspired by Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si (On Care for Our Common Home) (in its entirety, not “just” the sections on the Eucharist and liturgy) because it presents a world view and requires respecting and caring for all creatures who share this planet. It is illuminated by research into the history of sacramental theologies and the contemporary context of concern for the environment. In effect, there is no such thing as one Roman Catholic theology of the sacraments, and ‘more often than not differing contexts in the life of the church and the world required differing contents for sacramental theology. The author argues that concern for the environment is a traditional Catholic premise based on the goodness of creation and that God is creator of “heaven and earth.” He also argues that an ecological approach to sacramental theology can help to understand underlying factors and principles in the enactment of the liturgy of the sacraments about how and where God is discovered in the world in general and in the liturgy and sacraments in an intense and focused way through engagement with all who dwell in our common home.
Book Synopsis Enflamed by the Sacramental Word by : Vincent J. Pastro
Download or read book Enflamed by the Sacramental Word written by Vincent J. Pastro and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian proclamation, says Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is the living Christ walking among the people. Preachers know that Jesus is the living Word, and that the Spirit of Jesus animates the preaching event. Preaching is an epiclesis, an invocation of the Holy Spirit over God's holy people. As such, it must touch their imagination. Pastro proposes that preaching is the living ecclesial presence of Jesus Christ, Sacramental Word of the God of the poor. The Word speaks from the imagination of the poor - theeconomic poor, but also the new poor of the twenty-first century: entire indigenous cultures, women, those marginalized because of their sexuality, undocumented immigrants in dominant cultures, and many others. All Christian preachers in every context are called to solidarity with the poor. - Publisher info.
