Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Secretary Until within the last few years the Sunday school secretary was regarded rather as an accessory than as a part of the vital mechanism of the school. He did very little, largely because but little was required or expected. The development of the Sunday school during the last decade has been marvelous in many of the phases of the work, but in the majority of schools the secretary is still merely counting the attendance, perhaps adding the collection, and making a note of weather conditions. Just a glance, however, into the history of the development of the modern Sunday school shows that criticism is not to be directed at the secretary in contrast with the other officials. Nearly all of these other officers have had new, up-to-date plans and methods all worked out and not only offered but urged and forced upon them and their schools. Scores of volumes have been written, numerous magazines published, uncounted helps, representing fabulous investment, furnished - for nearly everyone but the secretary. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Report, Vol. 4 I desire to call especial attention to the report of the Treasurer of the Class Fund. The Class is deeply indebted to Darling for his careful and conservative treatment of the Class Funds, as these accounts are very accurately kept and involve a good deal of work for the person taking charge of them. Our next regular Class dinner and reunion will be held at Commencement in 1905, at which time every member of the Class, even including those who live in Boston and vicinity, should make an earnest endeavor to be present and get together once more. I regret to say that it will be seen from the following Class Records that the Secretary has been unable to keep in touch with various members of the Class, both regular and temporary. I earnestly desire any possible information in reference to these men who are scheduled as not heard from, and trust in following Reports that this list will be wiped out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Report, Vol. 1: July, 1882 I have the honor to present to you my first report as your Secretary. In the preparation of it I have followed quite closely the reports of the last two years, making but one change of any importance. The first list of the class on pages 5, ct seq. Has formerly contained the names of those who were regular members of the class during Senior year. Formerly no list has been given of those who received degrees. In this report the first list is of those who received degrees. To this fact the double column entitled Class of 1882 in the statistics (probable occu pation, etc.) is due. The first half of this column gives the statistics of those who were regular members of the class during the Senior year, the second the statistics of those who received degrees. Thus our class may be compared with preceding classes and also the statistics of our class, as composed of those who received degrees, may be examined. I imagine that eventually the statistics of graduating classes given by secretaries will be of those graduating, and with this idea in mind I have made the change. At any rate it seems to me that the report ought to contain a list of those who graduate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary, Vol. 5: June, 1899 For the fifth time it is my honor as your Secretary to submit a report of the Class of '84. I have endeavored in the following pages to give a hurried summary of the life of the Class, since its graduation, compiled from such information as I had or could procure from you. Consequently, there will be found here some repetitions of previous reports. While I have striven to commit as few errors as possible, yet I am only too conscious that in the great number of proper names and dates that appear there will necessarily have crept in some mistakes. For them I crave your pardon, and shall esteem it a personal favor to have them brought to my attention, that I may strive to avoid them in subsequent compilations. As you read over these pages, I am certain each of you will derive as much pleasure as I have done, in witnessing the careers of honorable usefulness now being lived by so many of my classmates, and I am certain you will feel as I have felt that your class is doing its part in carrying into life the teachings of our College. Best wishes for the future happiness of each one of you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The patient constable on point-duty at the foot Of Westminster Bridge had stamped his feet for the last time, and had been relieved by his colleague, who gave him the usual pass-word, All right. The tumultuous roar Of traffic, surging, beating, pulsating, had long ago ceased, but the crowd Of smart broughams and private hansoms still stood in New Palace Yard, while from the summit Of St. Stephen's tower the long ray Of electricity streamed westward, showing that the House Of Commons was still sitting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Report, No. II, 1884 A few who graduated are lost, as the records will show but several who were lying hid showed themselves after repeated appeals from me. Of members of the Class who did not graduate, the proportion of those lost and hiding is of course much larger, for many, who stayed with us but a few weeks or months, felt that the ties that bound them to the Class were so slight that they were broken when they left the College and Cambridge and then, too, it is hardly reasonable for the Secretary of our Class to expect communications from many of those who were ever connected with the glorious Class of seventy-seven (of whom we had a goodly sprinkling) when they can report them selves to the Secretary of that Class, though, thanks to Mr. Russell, seventy-seven's Secretary, 1 am enabled to make my records much more complete in this direction than they would otherwise be. I suppose there are some among us who are so innately modest that they dislike the idea of any printed mention of themselves, and this I judge to be the reason why some answers to my inquiries were delayed so long, and others are still wanting. There are some names, that, closely identified with our Class in most respects, I am against my will obliged to place among Members not Graduates, but the Faculty had to draw the line somewhere, though I can but think that they were feeling out of sorts when they drew it. It may be a surprise to some to learn, that, though we have thirty six lawyers among our graduates, and fifteen among those who did not graduate with us, we are considerably below the average of the classes near us, in lawyers. Seventy-six has 37 per cent among its graduates, and a total of 32 per cent, including all members. Seventy - Seven has, graduates 31 per cent, total 26 per cent. Seventy-nine has.
