Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of the Third International Interdisciplinary Conference on Stress and Tension Control, sponsored by the International Stress and Tension-Control Society held at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland from August 30-September 3, 1988. The Society celebrated the 15th year of its existence. It was founded in 1974 as the American Association for the Advancement of Tension-Control which held annual meetings in Chicago through 1979. Recognizing the multi-national interest in stress and tension control, the association changed its name and scope accordingly. The original American Association was founded and nurtured for many years by Dr. and Mrs. Edmund Jacobson and Professor F. J. McGuigan. The proceedings of the first international conference in London were also published by Plenum Publishing Company (Stress and Tension Contral, McGuigan, Sime and Wallace, 1980), as were those of the second international conference which was held at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England (McGuigan, Sime and Wallace, 1984). These and the publication of the proceedings from 1974 reflect the interest in stress and tension control that has grown steadily throughout the past decades, as also does the publication of numerous other books related to Stress Management.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is perhaps trite to refer to human beings as social animals, but never theless it is true. A substantial portion of our lives is spent in interactions with other people. Moreover, the nature, quality, and quantity of those interactions have a tremendous impact on behavior, mood, and the adequacy of adjustment. Faulty interpersonal relationship patterns have reliably been associated with a wide variety of behavioral-psychological dysfunctions ranging from simple loneliness to schizophrenia. Most "traditional" analyses of interpersonal failures have viewed them as consequences or by-products of other difficulties, such as anx iety, depression, intrapsychic conflict, or thought disorder. Con sequently, remediational efforts have rarely been directed to interper sonal behavior per se. Rather, it has been expected that interpersonal relationships would improve when the source disorder was eliminated. While this model does account for some interpersonal dysfunctions (e.g., social anxiety can inhibit interpersonal behavior), it is not adequate to account for the vast majority of interpersonal difficulties. In fact, in many cases those difficulties either are independent of or underlie other dysfunctions (e.g., repeated social failure may produce depression or social anxiety).
