Book excerpt: This dissertation investigated the effects of the cross age peer tutoring relationship when students in both the tutor and tutee roles were underachieving. The targeted population consisted of students who attended a charter school in the southwestern United States. Two studies were conducted: one in science and one in reading. Primarily, the goal was to investigate a model of cross-age peer tutoring that would benefit underachieving students in the content area of reading. Students who are underachieving in reading often struggle in other content areas as well, so finding a way to increase reading achievement in at-risk schools that lack funding and resources is of utmost importance to a child’s overall education. The first study, in the content area of science, was aimed at understanding if underachieving students could be placed in tutor roles to close gaps in their achievement. Sixteen middle school students (14 boys and two girls) in a mixed grade class (sixth through eighth) were trained to deliver a science curriculum to elementary students. The overall findings in this first study suggest that the tutors demonstrated significant gains in knowledge acquisition after having the opportunity to teach the material to the younger students. Findings also suggest that the act of teaching had a positive impact on the tutors’ attitudes towards learning about water conservation and in their valuing of water conservation. The second, larger study, in the content area of reading, paired underachieving middle school students with underachieving elementary students for a shared reading experience in which the middle schools students acted as tutors and were trained to focus on specific parts of the reading process to help the elementary students increase their reading achievement. This study consisted of 64 tutors (27 seventh graders and 37 eighth graders) and 77 tutees (26 Kindergarteners, 16 first graders, 12 second graders, and 23 third graders). The overall findings in this study demonstrate significant gains in reading for both the tutors and tutees. Although the investigations in this dissertation were limited in terms of sample size and lacked control groups, the results suggest that overall, cross-age tutoring is a way to help at-risk students become more engaged in their own educations and provide resource-challenged schools with a viable resource within their own walls.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the effects of the partner reading portion of the Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) Reading Methods Program on the reading performance and on-task behavior of four elementary-school children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A multiple baseline across pairs of participants design was employed to examine the effects of the peer tutoring program on reading fluency, reading comprehension, and on-task behavior. Results indicated that the intervention produced decreases in off-task behavior and increases in on-task behavior for the participants and their classroom peers. Minimal gains in reading fluency were attained. Individual responses varied during the follow-up phase. Measures of reading comprehension indicated relatively consistent performance across baseline and intervention phases. Teacher and student ratings of acceptability indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the partner reading portion of the PALS reading program. Limitations, implications, and future research of the study are discussed.

Research has shown that the impact of literacy coaching has increased teacher efficacy in the teaching of reading. -- This dissertation employed a mixed-methods study to determine the impact of literacy coaching on teacher efficacy when employing a balanced literacy framework. The participants were Grades 3–5 English/language arts (ELA) teachers from five Title 1 elementary schools within the same school district located in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. -- Quantitative data were collected using a five-point Likert scale survey distributed via Survey Monkey. The data were collected to determine the impact of literacy coaching when employing all tenets of balanced literacy instruction. The researcher designed the survey around tenets of balanced literacy instruction. The tenets included guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, independent writing, setting a clear purpose for reading, and modeling think-alouds for students. Focus-group questions were developed to verify survey data. Data analysis of focus-group responses entailed the researcher identifying themes and patterns, which further validated survey responses. -- The researcher found that literacy coaching had a positive impact on most teachers when implementing a balanced approach in their ELA classrooms. Recommendations for future research included conducting a study with ELA teachers in Grades Kindergarten through 3 to further determine the impact of literacy coaching on teacher efficacy.

Using a multiple baseline single case design, this study examined the impact of performance feedback from consultants on treatment integrity and student outcomes for Peer Assisted Learning Strategies, an evidence-based, standard protocol, class-wide peer tutoring intervention. Participants were four grade 2 to 5 general education teachers and the students in their classes. Results showed a functional relationship between performance feedback and treatment integrity, including higher treatment integrity of core intervention components. Reading growth rates appeared to have increased, but changes were not statistically significant. Overall, teachers rated the performance feedback procedure and PALS positively. Limitations of the study, implications for practice, and directions for future research are discussed.

Drawing from both Vygotskian and neo-sociocultural perspectives in designing a methodology that views the everyday practices of language and action as constructing knowledge, the funds of knowledge approach facilitates a systematic and powerful way to represent communities in terms of the resources they possess and how to harness them for classroom teaching. This book accomplishes three objectives: It gives readers the basic methodology and techniques followed in the contributors' funds of knowledge research; it extends the boundaries of what these researchers have done; and it explores the applications to classroom practice that can result from teachers knowing the communities in which they work.
