Book excerpt: he rapidly changing landscape of the information age has created a shortage of available talent to fill 21st century jobs. As workforce and economic development experts convene to develop talent pipelines, the adult education population remains absent from the equation. Historically, educational research has focused on the kindergarten through high school demographic. When research has focused on postsecondary issues, the focus has been traditional-age students. This study explored how virtual career role models might impact the academic and vocational self-efficacy of adult education students. Through a quantitative study of high school equivalency students, this researcher discovered no significant impact from the intervention on adult students' self-efficacy. A longitudinal study utilizing a larger sample and a more coordinated intervention is recommended.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Retention and persistence rates in online courses are lower than that of conventional courses for adult learners. One of the major factors for students dropping out or persisting in an online course was student characteristics at the beginning of the course. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the student characteristics Internet self-efficacy (ISE), self-directed learning readiness (SDLR), and online learning self-efficacy (OLSE) for adult learners. Specifically, the present study sought to determine how independent variables, SDLR (a learning factor in online courses) and ISE (a technological factor in online courses) together influence a dependent variable, OLSE. The study also investigated the individual contributions of ISE and SDLR on OLSE as well as the relationship between ISE and SDLR. The research questions were answered through an online survey instrument comprised of questions from the Internet Self-Efficacy Scale (ISS), the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS), and the Online Learning Self-Efficacy Scale (OLSES). ISS is a Likert-type scale that assesses participants' confidence with respect to use of the Internet to perform certain functions. SDLRS measures respondents' level of self-directedness through a series of Likert-style questions. OLSES is a Likert-based assessment that measures learner control, the learner's ability to learn with others in an Internet environment and the learners' Internet skills with respect to learning. One hundred eighty-nine participants completed the instrument. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlations, a path analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings show that ISE and SDLR are significant contributors to OLSE in adult learners. Based on the study's findings, instructional designers of online courses and online learning educators can reduce attrition in online courses by intentionally designing courses to increase students' ISE and SDLRS with the goal of increasing students' OLSE. For existing courses, instructors can assess students' ISE, SDLR, and OLSE at the beginning of a course to identify students who may be more likely to drop the course. The student scores can help the instructor to provide additional support to those students. In addition, adult students can identify weaknesses that could lead them to dropping an online course by measuring their ISE, SDLR and OLSE prior to taking the course. Once their weaknesses are identified, the students would be able to find resources to strengthen their ISE and SDLR."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Book excerpt: Whether it is earning a GED, a particular skill, or technical topic for a career, taking classes of interest, or even returning to begin a degree program or completing it, adult learning encompasses those beyond the traditional university age seeking out education. This type of education could be considered non-traditional as it goes beyond the typical educational path and develops learners that are self-initiated and focused on personal development in the form of gaining some sort of education. Essentially, it is a voluntary choice of learning throughout life for personal and professional development. While there is often a large focus towards K-12 and higher education, it is important that research also focuses on the developing trends, technologies, and techniques for providing adult education along with understanding lifelong learners’ choices, developments, and needs. The Research Anthology on Adult Education and the Development of Lifelong Learners focuses specifically on adult education and the best practices, services, and educational environments and methods for both the teaching and learning of adults. This spans further into the understanding of what it means to be a lifelong learner and how to develop adults who want to voluntarily contribute to their own development by enhancing their education level or knowledge of certain topics. This book is essential for teachers and professors, course instructors, business professionals, school administrators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the latest advancements in adult education and lifelong learning.

Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

Book excerpt: Institutions of higher education are experiencing an increasing number of students enrolling in online or distance education courses. The majority of these students are adult learners. The increase in enrollment is beneficial to institutions of higher education, but it is overshadowed by the low degree completion rate for online and distance education learners. Academic advisors play a crucial role in guiding students to degree completion. While there has been research on the potential contributing factors in online and distance education student retention, the research has been lacking in how communications with academic advisors may influence students’ levels of self-efficacy. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the perceptions of online and distance education adult learners’ interactions with their academic advisors and how these interactions influenced their level of self-efficacy and persistence to degree completion. The researcher conducted semistructured interviews with current and recent graduates of an online or distance education program. Semistructured interviews were also conducted with current academic advisors of online and distance education students. The data revealed that interactions with academic advisors played a vital role in students’ levels of self-efficacy. Three key themes emerged from the data as contributing factors to student self-efficacy and their interactions with academic advisors: Communication-Immediacy/Individualized Advisement, Relationships-Sense of Community, and Academic Advisor Influence-Student Self-Efficacy. Developing a greater focus in these areas of academic advisement for online and distance education students may assist in increasing online and distance education student retention. Keywords: academic advising, adult learners, andragogy, online and distance education, self-efficacy, sense of community
