Book excerpt: Emergent growing shoots, which may be added by muskrats (Ondatra zibethica) during a population irruption, are considerably richer in nitrogen and phosphorus than are dead leaves which fall into the water during senescence and fragmentation. The primary hypothesis was that the nutritional quality of Typha sp. litter samples would influence response patterns by various detritivorous macroinvertebrate functional groups.Macroinvertebrate abundance and biomass was not found to depend on litter nutritional quality. No differential response to litter decompositional stage was observed according to trophic function.However, shredder and scraper macroinvertebrates seem to have adapted life history patterns to seasonal input patterns of coarse detritus.These functional groups, adapted to coarse litter inputs, exhibited strong seasonal shifts in abundance and biomass. Those invertebrates trophically adapted to fine particulate detritus or live prey showed few seasonal changes.

These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. This book provides a first review in this field. It presents selected papers on the ecological effects of WLF in lakes, resulting from a workshop at the University of Konstanz in winter 2005. Issues addressed here include the extent of WLF, and analyses of their effects on different groups of biota from microorganisms to vertebrates. Applied issues include recommendations for the hydrological management of regulated lakes to reduce negative impacts, and a conceptual framework is delivered by an extension of the floodpulse concept for lakes. It has been estimated that there may be as many as 1. 5 million species of fungi, many of which are still undescribed. These interact in various ways with their hosts, with their substrates, with their competitors (including other fungi) and with abiotic variables of their environment. They show great variation in morphology, reproduction, life cycles and modes of dispersal. They grow in almost every conceivable habitat where organic carbon is available: on rock surfaces, in soil, the sea and in fresh water, at extremes of high and low temperature, on dry substrata and in concen trated solutions. Fungal ecology is therefore an enormous subject and its literature is voluminous. In view of this we have had to be selective in the material we have included in this book. We have chosen to concentrate on subjects in which we have some personal experience through either research or teaching. We preferred to tackle a few subjects in depth instead of attempting to cover a wider range of topics superficially. We are conscious of the extensive gaps in coverage: for example on the ecology of lichens, of fungal plant pathogens and of the complex interactions between fungi and animals. It is some justification that book-length treatments of these subjects are available elsewhere.
