Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an after-school music program on music underachievers' musical achievement, social development and self-esteem. A true-experimental pretest-posttest design was used and included 14 hours of treatment time. The subjects (N = 66), fifth-grade students were randomly selected from the lowest quartile of scores on Colwell's Music Achievement Test (MAT), which was administered to all fifth-grade students (N = 494) in three Korean elementary schools. The treatment group (n =33) experienced a movement-based after-school music program (MAMP); the control group (n = 33) did not receive the after-school music program. Measurements included sections of Colwell's Music Achievement Test (MAT), Kim's Social Development Scale (SDS), and Hare's Self-Esteem Scale (HSS). The researcher and music teachers of each school administered all measurements. Fourteen treatment lessons occurred over fourteen weeks. One-way analyses of covariance tests were used to test for post-test differences between groups. A significant difference was found in music achievement total scores of the MAT with the treatment group scoring higher scores than the control group. There were no significant differences for interval and meter discrimination tests of MAT. There were no significant differences between treatment and control groups in the post-test scores of the Social Development Scale (SDS) and the Self-Esteem Scale (HSS). However, for both tests, mean scores increased for the treatment group and decreased for the control group. Results from this study suggest that a movement-based after-school music program promotes music underachievers' musical growth and may also support music underachievers' social development and self-esteem.

Book excerpt: Research has been conducted on the effects music and movement instructional strategies have on students' academic performance and students' perceptions of school and learning. This action research study investigated the effect of utilizing music and movement instructional strategies to teaching students to count by 5s and 2s, compared to the traditional method of rote memorization. This study also examined the effect of music, movement, and memorization strategies on students' perceptions of math and their perceptions of using the strategies themselves. Throughout this four-week study, 12 students, aged six or seven, participated. After taking a pre-intervention assessment and survey, students were randomly assigned to the music intervention, movement intervention, or rote memorization control group. In these groups, students practiced counting by 5s suring Week 1 and counting by 2s in Week 2 before being assessed again on their knowledge and taking a post-intervention perception survey. Weeks 3 and 4 had students participating in maintenance before being assessed one final time at the end of the four weeks. While students in the movement group had the highest overall improvement in counting accuracy, results showed evidence of growth in both intervention groups and the control group. Due to this and other limitations identified in the study, an effect on either intervention method could not be determined.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative research study explored the observed and reported experiences of primary aged students when songs and movements were used to instruct mathematics. The bodily-kinesthetic and musical intelligences were studied in detail. Twenty pre-school, kindergarten, or first grade students participated in the study that involved singing and moving to learn mathematical concepts. The study focused on such mathematical topics as skip counting, telling time, measuring, using money, and making patterns. Analysis of the data indicated that student engagement and student achievement increased. Findings resulting from the study suggested that using scaffolding through different groupings, connecting multiple intelligences, and modifying instruction based on the needs of the class would help to increase student achievement and student desire towards learning. Results from the pre-test and post-test indicated that moving and singing in a classroom had positive implications on student success.

Book excerpt: "Taking into account the growing obesity epidemic and the expanding relationship between physical activity, music, and academic performance, this new book gives readers the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions to guide and motivate children toward a lifetime of movement. More than a listing of activities, this resource presents in-depth information on physical activity and music that allows the early childhood educator to match motivating physical activity and music lessons to the developmental level of the child. The guiding principles throughout the book focus on meeting individual needs, reciprocating environment and curriculum, integrating movement and music, involving family and community, and providing guidance through assessment and standards"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of movement instruction on the musical and movement achievement of beginning band students. The following research questions were explored: (a) Does the use of rhythmic motor movements during instrumental lessons influence the rhythmic achievement of beginning band students? (b) Does the type of movement affect the rhythmic achievement of beginning band students? (c) Are students' music abilities influenced by the incorporation of movement and music? and (d) Are students' movement abilities influenced through the incorporation of music and movement? Fifth-grade students ( N = 100) were randomly assigned to one of five treatment groups for this study. The instruction in four of the treatment groups incorporated a unique movement technique, while the fifth group used no movement. Subjects performed a pretest, and after a 16 week period of instruction, performed a posttest. Music performance results were analyzed using a five-way ANCOVA to examine if there were significant differences in the adjusted posttest scores between groups. Results for the music performance test indicated significant differences between the movement groups with the foot tapping, stepping, and swaying groups achieving the highest mean scores. Movement results indicated significant differences among the groups, with the highest mean scores achieved by the stepping and swaying groups in the measurements of continuity, ease of execution, and rhythmic movement subtests. Among the conclusions of the study is that rhythmic achievement in elementary band and movement are mutually beneficial.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to document the teaching practices and underlying intentions of teachers in a Waldorf early childhood program in relationship to integrative movement and its connections to learning for the kindergarten through grade three learner. Current concerns about unhealthy sedentary lifestyles and the decreasing emphasis on physical activity/movement in public schools are growing. This dissertation explores current educational research related to the effects of movement on cognitive processing and the potential effects of movement on learning, particularly in a Waldorf-based early childhood program in which movement is integrated into all aspects of learning (including all academic subjects). This dissertation includes a literature review of current research and theory, and a qualitative micro-ethnographic case study of a Waldorf-based early childhood program that involved teacher observations and interviews. Key findings: the Waldorf-based early childhood program provided practical methods for (1) encouraging various modes of free play intended to enhance a child's physical, social/emotional and academic development, (2) integrating teacher-led movements into the daily curriculum, (3) utilizing movement to aid cognitive processing and prepare students for more sedentary academic work, (4) integrating remedial work into the daily classroom curriculum, and (5) utilizing intentional movement to help a child learn to embody stillness as a means of focusing attention and energy. Movements integrated into the curriculum by the teachers created observable positive effects on the students: eagerness to participate, recall, extending focus and attention, and creating social awareness and cooperation. Conclusions: (1) Waldorf-based education programs may provide practical examples and theoretical perspectives relevant to the creation of an integrated and comprehensive movement-based curriculum for the early childhood learner, and (2) The Waldorf teachers studied provide a counter-position to early childhood teaching practices that utilize movement as a break from sedentary learning. This study revealed the effects of imposing or integrating stillness into a movement-rich curriculum. Future recommendations include more comprehensive research on Waldorf-based educational programs and educational research that reaches beyond movement's potential positive or negative effect on a student's academic progress to study in more depth how and why movement impacts learning for the young child.
