Book excerpt: Nationally, there are increasing numbers of students who are at-risk for academic and/or social failure (U.S. Department of Education, 2009). In an attempt to address this trend, the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (PL 108-446) encouraged educators to provide early and appropriate interventions not only to identify and help children with disabilities, but to also provide additional supports for students with academic difficulties and challenging behaviors. Although there have been evidenced-based academic interventions pertaining to students with challenging behaviors, most of the literature has been focused on reading interventions rather than mathematics interventions (Bos & Vaughn, 2005). This study examined the effects of integrating children's literature in mathematics instruction on the academic and behavioral outcomes of students with academic difficulty and challenging behaviors. A single subject, multiple baseline design across participants was implemented to examine the effects of this curricular approach on increasing student engagement, reducing disruptive behaviors, and increasing the teacher's rate of providing opportunities to respond for four elementary students identified as exhibiting academic difficulty and challenging behaviors during Tier II mathematics instruction. In addition, two pretest/posttest designs were used to assess the academic achievement of the student participants. Results of this study suggest that integrating children's literature in mathematics instruction is an effective curricular approach for increasing engagement for students with academic difficulties and challenging behaviors. Furthermore, results suggest that this curricular approach was effective in increasing the teacher's rate of providing opportunities for students to respond. However, results were not definitive regarding the effectiveness of integrating children's literature in mathematics instruction on decreasing disruptive behavior and there were no results of significance on student mathematics achievement. Directions for future research and educational implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book is essential reading in the sociology of education, social policy and mathematics education. It is for teachers, principals, superintendents, school leaders and policymakers. For too long, many children have not achieved their best potential in mathematics at both primary and secondary schools. Although scholarly interest in students' attitudes towards mathematics and achievement in mathematics has increased, there is scant research which explores the explanatory potential of Bourdieu's trilogy of habitus, cultural capital and social field in investigating students' attitudes towards mathematics. The content is based on a rich empirical study of 1106 students aged 14-16 and gives a detailed account drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data to show the intersection of social class, gender and ethnicity on students' aspiration, attitudes towards mathematics and mathematical achievement at GCSE in secondary schools in England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many teachers use traditional counting and shape books in math class. But what would happen if we approached any story with a math lens? How might mathematizing children's literature give learners space to ask their own questions, and make connections between stories, their lives, and the world around them? These are the questions authors Allison Hintz and Antony T. Smith set out to explore in Mathematizing Children's Literature: Sparking Connections, Joy, and Wonder Through Read-Alouds and Discussion as they invite us to consider fresh ways of using interactive read-alouds to nurture students as both readers and mathematicians. Inside Mathematizing Children's Literature, you'll learn how to do the following: Select picture books according to the goals of the read aloud experience Plan and facilitate three styles of read aloud discussions - Open Notice and Wonder, Math Lens, and Story Explore Utilize Idea Investigations - experiences that invite students to pursue literacy and math-focused ideas beyond the pages of the read aloud Connect with students' families and communities through stories Along the way, Hintz and Smith provide a wide range of picture book suggestions and appendices that include ready-to-use lesson planning templates, a form for notes, and a bookmark of guiding questions. Mathematizing Children's Literature is a practical resource you'll find yourself referring to frequently.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this professional development project was to train teachers in using children's literature for math instruction and to also examine its effect on student math learning at an elementary school. Teachers were taught how to use children's literature to instruct and enhance their math curriculum through the use of literature pieces, manipulatives, and graphic organizers. For two weeks twelve fourth-grade students were taught long division using explicit teacher instruction without integrating children's literature, and at the end took an end of unit test on long division. Then, the students were taught long division using selected children's literature for two weeks and took the end of unit test again. Results indicate that using children's literature in math helps students understand and retain concepts more effectively. Selected quality children's literature can be effectively integrated in elementary math instruction to improve student math achievement.

Book excerpt: Is there a way to get students to love math? Dr. Judy Willis responds with an emphatic yes in this informative guide to getting better results in math class. Tapping into abundant research on how the brain works, Willis presents a practical approach for how we can improve academic results by demonstrating certain behaviors and teaching students in a way that minimizes negativity. With a straightforward and accessible style, Willis shares the knowledge and experience she has gained through her dual careers as a math teacher and a neurologist. In addition to learning basic brain anatomy and function, readers will learn how to * Improve deep-seated negative attitudes toward math. * Plan lessons with the goal of "achievable challenge" in mind. * Reduce mistake anxiety with techniques such as errorless math and estimation. * Teach to different individual learning strengths and skill levels. * Spark motivation. * Relate math to students' personal interests and goals. * Support students in setting short-term and long-term goals. * Convince students that they can change their intelligence. With dozens of strategies teachers can use right now, Learning to Love Math puts the power of research directly into the hands of educators. A Brain Owner's Manual, which dives deeper into the structure and function of the brain, is also included—providing a clear explanation of how memories are formed and how skills are learned. With informed teachers guiding them, students will discover that they can build a better brain . . . and learn to love math!

This annotated bibliography of 575 references lists all major publications by or about NAEP published between 1969 and 1983. References are in a classified arrangement, by specific or special assessment. Documents not dealing with a specific assessment are grouped by: Methodological Publications; Special Analyses; and General and Miscellaneous. Materials by NAEP are separated from materials about NAEP done by external organizations. Subject, Personal Author, and Preparing Institution indexes are provided. The compilation is based on materials (documents and journal articles) archived in the database of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), and therefore most documents cited can be obtained through the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS).
