Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to better understand the effects the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program has on 10th, 11th or 12th grade high school students' confidence in making career-related decisions following participation in the program. The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form (CDSE-SF), surveys, and focus group conversations were used to gather data. A pre- and post-test was a key part of this study's design and results of a paired sample t-test revealed that participation in the program had a statistically significant impact on the students' Career Decision Self-efficacy (CDSE). However, results of an independent t-test revealed that there was little difference in confidence levels between students that participated in the ASVAB CEP during this study and those that participated the previous school year. Schools are succeeding at providing students career-related information and career-related experiences; however, emphasis on planning students' futures, problem-solving, and creating goals may be necessary. Recommendations as a result of this study include ensuring all stakeholders are fully aware of career interventions offered in a high school and students receive their intervention results in a timely, professional manner. In addition, as part of a school's comprehensive school counseling program, school counselors could solicit motivated teachers to become certified School Career Development Advisors to assist with meeting students' career-related needs. Lastly, a range of career-related experiences for all students such as work-based learning, post-secondary enrollment options and a modern CTE program, could assist students with gaining the confidence required for making good career-related decisions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore senior high school students' college and career readiness self-efficacy after participating in a 1:1 setting. Student self-efficacy and teacher opinions on their students' college and career readiness self-efficacy as it relates to technology integration in the classroom were investigated. This study provides evidence of the impact of a 1:1 program in the context of student college and career readiness self-efficacy. Albert Bandura's (1994) Theory of Self-Efficacy provided the theoretical framework for this study. Bandura theorized there are four main causes of influence: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional and physiological states. Qualitative data were collected from teachers through interviews conducted via school email. Qualitative data were collected from students through face-to-face interviews. The two data sets were analyzed using the Colaizzi method. Once analyzed, the results were compared to determine what beliefs students and teachers hold between a 1:1 setting and students' college and career readiness self-efficacy. Data analysis resulted in 10 themes: Distractions (D), Confidence (C), Advantage (A), Essential (E), Prepared (P), Encouraged (EN), Technical Difficulties (TD), Easier (EA), Success (S), and Needs Improvement (NI). While there are some concerns of distractions, technical difficulties, and needs for improvement, overall, teacher and student participants admit mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional and psychological states are all important and essential factors for the success of a 1:1 program that improves student college and career readiness self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: This study addresses the problem of high school graduates with learning disabilities who are unprepared for higher education and the workplace because of limited exposure to career professionals and perceived barriers. The purpose of this study is to examine how a career exploration model, entitled CaMPs (Career Model Professionals) influences students' career decision-making self-efficacy. CaMPs incorporates exposure to career role models, as well as career research and self-reflection. CaMPs proivides students with learning disabilities first-hand accounts of successful career professionals, to assist them in setting academic and career goals that are aligned to their personal strengths. This mixed methods study develops and evaluates a career based innovation for high school students and reviews the relationship between the innovation and students' self-efficacy. Students completed a self-efficacy survey (Career Decision Self-Efficacy - Short Form: CDSE) before and after the implementation of the CaMPs program. A t-test comparing pre- and post-survey scores indicated that there was a significant increase in self-efficacy after completion of the program. Qualitative data revealed changes in students' career interests and new considerations to their career preparation process after participating in the CaMPs innovation. This study will be useful in the development of career programs for high school students, particularly those with learning disabilities, to assist them in choosing and preparing for their future careers.

Book excerpt: The study examined the short-term effects of a career education intervention on participant's self-reported career self-efficacy, while also considering gender, income levels, mothers' education levels, and treatment condition as potential moderators of the participants' career-self efficacy. Sited in a rural Texas community and utilizing a posttest only design, the study used the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale -- Short Form as the posttest instrument to measure participants' self-reported career self-efficacy levels. Demographic information was obtained from the students and parents who agreed to participant [sic] in the study. A 4-way ANOVA was conducted to determine the main effect for the independent variables and the interaction effect between the independent variables that would indicate a moderating effect from any demographic variables. Results indicated that the only statistically significant variable was the treatment (intervention) itself; no other variables indicated a statistical significance, most likely due to the limited variability within the sample regarding ethnicity, mothers' education levels, and socioeconomic status. In addition, the five subscales of the posttest instrument were examined to determine practical application for the study sample. The Planning subscale was the only subscale that yielded statistical significance. Most students expressed already knowing their goals for the future, but indicated they needed assistance with planning for those goals. Based on these and additional results, implications and recommendations include working with this population to focus more efforts on planning, and future similar studies with larger samples that contain more variability to better examine the interaction between the independent variables. More importantly, a recommendation is made for future research with rural areas populations that contain little variability.

Book excerpt: The study was designed to obtain information that would be of value to secondary school personnel who provide career counseling and guidance to high school students preparing for post-secondary education, training, and employment. The study attempted to determine if African-American, Anglo, and Hispanic students varied significantly on characteristics that could potentially inhibit career decision-making. The characteristics investigated included career indecision and self-efficacy. Participants included 74 sophomore and senior students from three rural high schools in South Central Texas. Two research questions were investigated to determine if there were significant differences among Anglo, African-American, and Hispanic students on measures of career indecision and self-efficacy. A third research question was investigated to determine if significant differences existed on measures of career indecision and self-efficacy by ethnicity, gender, and grade level, as well as for the interaction of ethnicity, gender, and grade level. A supplementary analysis of the three research questions was conducted including school as an independent variable. The Career Decision Scale and Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale were administered to the participants and the data were analyzed with ANOVA and MANOVA statistical tests. No significant differences were obtained for the three research questions. When the school variable was included in the data analysis, significant main effects differences were found for grade level on self-efficacy and for school on career indecision. The combination of ethnic groups, genders, and grade levels indicated significant differences for the interaction of gender and grade level on self-efficacy and for the interaction of ethnicity and gender on self-efficacy. Middle to high levels of career indecision were reported by 90% of the seniors and 79% of all students in the study. The researcher recommended that career interventions would be valuable to sophomores and seniors in helping them prepare for post-secondary career choices.
