This book was released on 1995 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem investigated in this study was: what is the effect of involving the community in the education of African-American students who live in an at-risk environment? The Accelerated Schools Model was studied to ascertain if it provided a vehicle for greater community involvement. When all stakeholders work with a unity of purpose, empowered parents, staff, students, and members of the community can make decisions that effect curriculum and instruction. Building on the strengths of students, and all other stakeholders would cause students to improve academically as measured by the CAT/MMAT Tests. Ethnographic methods were used in this case study. Data collection began in August 1988 and participant-observer were means of collecting data. The process of triangulation was used to support, refine or disconfirm patterns and themes as they developed. The study demonstrated that Pershing Accelerated School has transformed itself according to the Accelerated Schools Model and is effective in involving the community in the education of African-American students who live in an at-risk environment. The most rewarding accomplishment of the school and community was the naming of Pershing as a Gold Star and Blue Ribbon School during the 1993-94 school year. The Gold Star Award is given to Missouri Schools, by Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, for outstanding academic excellence and the Blue Ribbon Award recognizes some of the nation's most successful schools. The Accelerated Schools Model provided the process for bringing the community, staff, and parents together to improve the academic achievement of the students. It is imperative that we teach all children to dream and to do for children living in at-risk environments what we do for children we perceive as gifted.

Book Synopsis The Effect of School Renaissance on TAAS Scores in the McKinney ISD by : John A. Nunnery
Download or read book The Effect of School Renaissance on TAAS Scores in the McKinney ISD written by John A. Nunnery and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present research is a third-party study of the effects of the School Renaissance (SR) comprehensive school reform (CSR) model on student achievement in 11 elementary and middle schools in Texas. The primary measures used in the study were the Texas Learning Index (TLI) reading and mathematics scores obtained through administration of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS). The context for the study was the McKinney Independent School District (MISD). Implementation of Reading Renaissance in MISD elementary schools began in the spring, 2000 and was mandated in all district schools in the fall, 2000. The mathematics program was subsequently mandated in all schools in January 2002. Given the cooperation of MISD, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and superintendents from 10 other Texas school districts, a matched treatment-control pretest-posttest design was employed to address the following primary research questions: (1) How do SR schools compare to matched Comparison schools (C) in student achievement on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills? (2) Do SR effects relative to C schools vary for (a) reading and mathematics and (b) elementary and middle schools? (3) Do SR effects vary for different types of students? and (4) Do SR effects relative to C schools vary as a function of the degree of SR model implementation? Major conclusions from the study include: (1) In the elementary grades, SR schools showed a clear trend of improved performance; (2) In the middle school grades, SR schools had noticeably improved performance relative to C schools when viewing separate cohorts in both reading and mathematics, although performance was significantly better only in mathematics in the 2002 8th grade longitudinal cohort; (3) Descriptive data showed trends for higher SR than C gains in both reading and mathematics for both 2001 and 2002 cohorts in the free or reduced-price lunch subgroup and in the limited-English-proficiency subgroup but the reverse was true for the 2002 cohort in the low-achieving subgroup; and (4) Implementation intensity was positively related to SR program effects on both reading and mathematics scores. As a whole, these results are suggestive of its benefits for student achievement, and if consistently replicated in future studies would strongly imply proven effectiveness as CSR model. Results also imply that program impacts are significantly more positive when implementation intensity is high. In view of the overall positive results obtained in this study, it is recommended that future research examine school environment variables such as school climate and teacher buy-in to better explain varied program effectiveness across schools and identify the optimum conditions for schools to realize benefits from SR adoption. Summary of Student Sample Sizes is appended. (Contains 47 figures and 17 tables.).
Book Synopsis The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs by :
Download or read book The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs written by and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs is a resource to develop effective and high quality comprehensive school counseling programs that align with Texas statutes and rules governing the work of school counselors. It outlines a process for tailoring school counseling programs to meet the varying needs of students across an array of school districts through implementation of the four components of school counseling programs, Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support. With this resource, a school counselor will learn to use campus-specific data to identify the unique needs of a campus and design a comprehensive school counseling program to meet those needs. Recognizing the important roles of the entire educational community, the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs provides examples of how parents, teachers, administrators, principals and school counselors can best contribute to implementation of each of the four components of comprehensive school counseling programs. It provides a developmental framework for a school counseling program curriculum that includes activities at each grade level to enhance students¿ educational, career, personal and social development.

Download or read book The Factors Effecting Student Achievement written by Engin Karadağ and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of psychological, social and demographic variables on student achievement and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret student achievement literature and suggests new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the authors compile various studies examining the relationship between student achievement and 21 psychological, social and demographic variables separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Download or read book Policy, Leadership, and Student Achievement written by C. Kent McGuire and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second book in the series examining student achievement. The chapters in this book reflect the scholarly papers presented at the July 2006 Education Policy, Leadership Summer Institute (EPLSI) by K–16 educators, researchers, community advocates, and policymakers who work in urban communities. The Institute serves as a place where individuals interested in scholarly discussions and research directly related to: (1) how data can be utilized to inform policy; (2) examining the urban school context from the perspectives of the polity, school leaders; students; and other related internal and external actors; and (3) identifying strategies for improving student academic achievement can gather. During this week-long Institute, participants examined the structural problems and policy tensions affecting urban communities and student achievement. The Institute’s theme, Meeting the Challenges of Urban Schools is reflected throughout this book. Specifically, this edition explores the interrelated aspects of policy, practice and research and how they affect academic achievement. The five sections in this book examine different challenges facing urban schools and their impact on student performance.
Book Synopsis A Preliminary Analysis of the Effects of the School Improvement Grant Program on Student Achievement in Texas by : David Dickey-Griffith
Download or read book A Preliminary Analysis of the Effects of the School Improvement Grant Program on Student Achievement in Texas written by David Dickey-Griffith and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I use school-level data from the state of Texas to test whether receiving a School Improvement Grant has led to higher graduation, completion, or dropout rates and/or increased student achievement, as measured by standardized tests in Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Writing. As part of this analysis, I also test to see if the effects of the program vary for urban vs. rural schools, charters vs. non-charters, or between demographic subgroups. The results of my analysis suggest that in its first year of implementation SIG had a negative effect on student achievement at elementary and middle schools across almost all subjects and subgroups and little effect on achievement at high schools, although the program does appear to have had a positive effect on graduation rates. These results also suggest that rural schools saw fewer benefits from the program than urban schools, while the effects for charter schools were relatively similar to the effects for traditional public schools.
