The present research utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine the effects of supervisor self-disclosure on perceptions of the supervisor and the supervision relationship. Thirty two graduate students participated in the present study. The primary hypothesis was that self-disclosing supervisors would be rated as significantly more facilitative and socially influential than non-disclosing supervisors. The results provide support for this hypothesis in that the analyses of variance performed for the condition of self-disclosure on all dependent variables yielded significant results. In addition, it was found that the self-disclosing supervisors were significantly more preferred than the non-disclosing supervisors.

The participants in this study were school counseling site supervisors and their supervisees enrolled in internship in school counseling at a CACREP accredited land-grant university in the southeastern United States. This study employed a collective case study design using multiple cases as sources for investigating the perspectives of both members of the supervisory dyad regarding the shared experience of a supervisor self-disclosure statement. Qualitative data analysis procedures provided a means for understanding participants’ perspectives. Relevant findings from the research included a common description of self-disclosure among participants and congruent perspectives between supervisors and supervisees sharing the same SRSD experience regarding the intended purpose and perceived effect of the SRSD. The researcher discussed implications for counselor education and for future research.

Book excerpt: This descriptive quantitative study explored the relationship of supervisory effectiveness and supervisory working alliance as rated by supervisor and supervisee. These constructs were assessed by two self report measures: Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (SWAI) and The Supervision: Adherence and Guidance Evaluation (SAGE). SWAI was used to gather information on the perceptions of the supervisor and supervisee actions of each other, how this affects the relationship, and the supervisee's interaction with clients. The SAGE was utilized to allow for measurement of the facilitating effect the supervisor has on the learner as demonstrated by use of a range of supervisory techniques that are known to be effective. The selection of these measures answers a call from the literature to examine the supervisory process using multiple, methodologically sound measures. A convenience sample of 42 counseling students and supervisors was drawn from students and supervisors at a CACREP accredited university in the Midwest. Participants had the option of completing the questionnaire in the classroom or at their discretion using the internet data collection service Survey Monkey. Several important correlations were examined using a Pearson's correlation coefficient: (a) between supervisee and supervisory perceived working alliance and effectiveness, (b) between supervisees perceived working alliance and effectiveness, and (c) between supervisors perceived working alliance and effectiveness. Positive correlations between working alliance and effectiveness ratings for supervision dyads were anticipated and supported. There was a strong, positive correlation between relationship and effectiveness ratings for supervisors and supervisees, r = .765, p = .01 for supervisee reports and r = .699, p = .001. Internal consistency for these measures was also supported by Cronbach's Alpha analysis. Correlations between supervisor and supervisee reports were anticipated but did not approach significance in this sample. Book excerpt: This research is concerned with client/student facing supervisees' supervision experiences in social work and higher education settings and focuses on their reported experiences with supervisory dyads in which they have perceived social identity differences. The primary goal of this dissertation is to better understand the relationship of reported supervisor self-disclosure about identity and directing dyad conversations to supervisor and supervisee social identities (a form of topic management) with supervisee perceived psychological safety and optimal distinctiveness in these settings. The dissertation utilized a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach of internet-based survey (Study 1: N = 376) and computer-mediated interviews (Study 2: N = 25) to explore these associations. Results of Study 1 revealed curvilinear relationships between communication forms and optimal distinctiveness measures. The survey also found perceived supervisor cultural competence to be a powerful mediator and moderator of communication, identity, and distinctiveness with psychological safety. In Study 2, participant interviews supported Study 1's quantitative findings and provided greater detail on the reported processes and outcomes of 1-on-1 supervisor social identity communication. Supervisor social identity communication process themes that emerged from participant interviews were (1) acknowledgement, (2) related to work and efficacy, (3) assumptions and biases, (4) lack of discussion, (5) boundaries, norms, and expectations, (6) frequency and timing, (7) power management, (8) process attributes, and (9) outside 1-on-1. Supervisor social identity communication outcome themes that emerged from participant interviews were (1) boundaries, norms, and expectations, (2) intimacy, (3) power sharing and management, (4) role efficacy, and (5) safety, support, and satisfaction, and (6) salience.

The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of beginning practicum level supervisees, perceptions of their supervisors' gender-related personality traits (instrumentality and expressiveness) and the discrepancy between their perceptions of their supervisors, gender-related personality traits and the gender-related personality traits they ascribe to people of their supervisor's same sex (gender discrepancy of instrumentality and gender discrepancy of expressiveness) to predict process (supervisory working alliance and supervisee self-disclosure) and outcome (supervision impact and supervisee self-efficacy) measures in the supervisory relationship. Participants for this study were 44 graduate students (12 males and 32 females) with a mean age of 29.0 (SD = 8.6) who were enrolled in their first or second practicum recruited from a number of counseling psychology graduate programs throughout the United States. Specifically, the results indicated that for beginning practicum supervisees, perceived expressiveness significantly predicted the supervisory working alliance, supervisee self-disclosure and supervision impact; perceived instrumentality significantly predicted supervisee self-efficacy. Additionally, perceived instrumentality and expressiveness accounted for moderate to quite high proportions of variance (R 2 ranging from. 38 to. 52), suggesting that they are important variables in supervision. Gender discrepancy of expressiveness and gender discrepancy of instrumentality were significantly related to several of the process and outcome variables. However, when the other gender-related variables (i.e., expressiveness and instrumentality) were entered into the same models, the discrepancy variables did not add significant unique variance beyond instrumentality and expressiveness, nor did the discrepancy variables add enough variance to be included in a general predictive model. The implications for these results are discussed, as well as suggestions for future research.

Although the use of referent power is a key factor in successful leadership, little research has been conducted to identify specific communicative behaviors that enable a supervisor to establish a referent power base. Given that positive affect, specifically liking, is the basis for the enactment of referent power, this study examines the relationship between a supervisor's self-disclosure behavior and the extent to which an employee likes his or her supervisor. A sample of working professionals (N=168) was surveyed and asked to respond to several scales that assessed their current supervisor's self-disclosure behavior and one scale that assessed how much they liked that supervisor. A hierarchical regression was conducted and results indicated that both perceived motivation for self-disclosure and self-disclosure appropriateness predicted an employee's liking for his or her supervisor. Implications for practice and directions for future research are offered.
