Male Ss (N=22) participated including 7 training isotonically (T), 7 training isokinetically (K), and 8 control subjects performing no resistance leg training (C). Ss performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with an additional set on Friday to systematically adjust work load. No group significantly increased thigh girth or body weight. Both groups exhibited carryover of concentric strength from eccentric training in certain tests. (T) improved significantly over (C) in isotonic concentric one repetition maximum, 5 second isometric, and both Margaria Kalaman power tests. (T) improved significantly over (K) in the concentric isotonic one repetition maximum as well. (K) improved significantly over (C) in average concentric peak torque (170°/second) and in the Margaria Kalaman power test at 6 meters. Both groups exhibited carryover of strength when tested at fast speeds from slow speed training programs (60°/second). (T) improved significantly over (C) in average eccentric peak torque (170°/second) and the Margaria Kalaman tests of power. (K) significantly improved over (C) in average concentric peak torque (170°/second), eccentric total work (170°/second) and the Margaria Kalaman power test at 6 meters. Both groups significantly improved over (C) in eccentric isotonic one repetition maximums. Only (K) significantly increased average eccentric peak torque at 60° /second over (C).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze and determine the effects on muscular strength, endurance, and hypertrophy of a single supramaximal eccentric contraction and submaximal concentric contraction after conventional resistance training. In this study, 2 male collegiate football athletes completed four weeks of strength training on the bench press. Training was conducted 3 times per week with 1RM testing and chest circumference measurements done before training, after two weeks of training, and after four weeks of training. The independent variables were the types of contractions being performed after the strength training- eccentric or concentric. The dependent variables were performance in the 1RM bench press, ACSM push-up test, and change in chest circumference. The bench press is an exercise that is an excellent measure of upper body strength; it’s utilized in almost every recreational lifting program and used as a measure of performance for the NFL combine and power lifting competitions. The ACSM push-up test is a test that measures upper body muscular endurance and is used to assess general health in a wide range of age groups and populations. The chest circumference measurements were used to measure muscular hypertrophy as the course of training progressed. The sessions were completed with both subjects lifting together and competing to improve 1RM the most from baseline and improve amount of push-ups done from baseline. It was hypothesized that performing a supramaximal eccentric contraction after conventional strength training on the bench press would yield higher percentage increases on the 1RM, number of push-ups performed from baseline, and muscular hypertrophy from baseline. Pilot data suggested that the hypotheses made were true. Data concluded that (1) the concentric group experienced a greater increase of strength than the eccentric group after two weeks of training (6.6% compared to 5.45% from baseline); while the eccentric group experienced a greater increase in strength than the concentric group after four weeks of training (12.72% compared to 10% from baseline), (2) the eccentric group yielded a higher percent increase in push-up repetitions after two and four weeks of training (31.43% at 2 weeks and 37.14% at 4 weeks), (3) the concentric group displayed a greater increase in chest circumference and hypertrophy after two weeks and four weeks of training (2.09% at 2 weeks and 2.70% at 4 weeks).

Healthy, male subjects performed maximal eccentric contractions to induce muscle injury to the forearm flexor muscles, with subsequent changes in maximal isometric strength and vascular responses assessed at one, 24, 48, and 96 hours post-injury. Endothelial-dependent and-independent vasodilation was measured using brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and sublingual nitroglycerin administration, respectively. Mean blood velocities were measured by Doppler ultrasound and later used for the calculation of blood flow and the shear stress area under the curve (SS AUC). Subjects performed sub-maximal handgrip exercise 48 hours following injury and muscle blood flow was assessed via Doppler ultrasound. Eccentric exercise resulted in significant decreases in maximal isometric strength for up to 96 hours. Endothelial-dependent and -independent vasodilation was also significantly impaired for up to 96 hours following eccentric-induced injury. The shear stress stimulus (SS AUC) responsible for the FMD response was significantly reduced from one to 48 hours post-injury. However, resting blood pressure and blood flow remained the same throughout the duration of the study despite an increase in brachial artery diameter at one and 48 hours following eccentric exercise. Additionally, the muscle blood flow response to dynamic sub-maximal handgrip exercise was not significantly different 48 hours post-injury. In summary, these results suggest that skeletal muscle injury results in prolonged impairment of local vascular function without influencing subsequent muscle blood flow at rest or during sub-maximal exercise.

Forty-five healthy female volunteer subjects between the ages of 22 and 64 were recruited for this training study. the null hypotheses were that there would be no difference between the control, isotonic and isokenetic groups and no difference in the baseline to post training sessions. All subjects had an orthopaedic screening of their lower extremities. In a test/retest experimental design, the right quadriceps muscle groups of each subject was tested in the isokinetic mode with an eccentric/extension contraction. Subjects were divided into three groups--Eccentric Isotonic (ET), Eccentric Isokinetic (EK), and the Control (C). the EK training included 5 eccentric knee extension and flexion contractions on the BioDex Unit at the speeds of 60, 60, 75 and 75 degrees per second. Five repetitions were done with a 10 second rest. the ET group was exercised in the isotonic mode on the BioDex. the ET performed twenty eccentric exercise repetitions at each training session. the resistance load was adjusted for each subject through the training interval to assure isometric maximal quadriceps loading (in extension) for twenty repetitions. Twenty-four training sessions were performed at the same time of day for both groups. the control group was not trained. Subject performance data on peak torgue (PT) and total work (TW) was collected on the computer system using SYSTAT. A two-way ANOVA was used to determine the effect of group on peak torque and total work. Statistically the results showed that no significant differences existed between the isokinetic eccentric and the isotonic eccentric training for knee extension. Power using a vertical jump test after training was not significant either. An ANCOVA analysis was performed with pretraining measurements of torque as the co-variable. Although there were no significant differences from any of the dependent variables, there was a slight trend for improvement in isokinetic eccentric training, primarily in the variable of total work.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that numerous previous investigations have demonstrated the robust effects of BFR resistance training in producing muscle hypertrophy and improved strength, the underlying mechanisms responsible for such effects remain poorly understood. Limited work has been done examining the effects of contraction type on the acute responses to BFR resistance training. In addition, while BFR has been demonstrated to induce similar improvement in muscle mass and strength, it is unknown what effect it will have on the muscles response when subsequent high-intensity exercise is performed. Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effect that eccentric muscle actions with BFR have on microvascular oxygenation and neuromuscular activation, as well as to examine the effects that eccentric actions with BFR has on attenuating muscle damage during a subsequent bout of maximal exercise. Methods: Participants where healthy, recreationally active and/or sedentary college aged males. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups, 30% of maximal torque (LOW), 30% of maximal torque with BFR (LBFR), or control (CON). Participants in both LOW and LBFR groups performed a precondition bout of low-intensity eccentric exercise consisting of four sets (1x30, 3x15) of eccentric exercise of the knee extensors (quadriceps). The LBFR performed the exercise bout with the addition of BFR, with an external occlusion pressure corresponded to 130% of the resting systolic blood pressure. Surface electromyography (sEMG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to record the neuromuscular activation and microvascular oxygenation of the knee extensors during the low-intensity precondition exercise (LOW, LBFR). Ninety-six hours after the precondition exercise, all participants performed a bout of maximal eccentric exercise consisting of six sets of ten repetitions, this was done in an attempt to induce muscle damage. Following the maximal eccentric exercise bout, all participants reported back 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours later to assess muscle damage and function. Muscle damage and function was assessed via changes in maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque, maximal voluntary concentric torque, range of motion (ROM), muscle soreness, and mid-thigh circumference. Results: There was a significant difference in neuromuscular activation of the vastus medialis (VM-RMS-root mean squared) between LOW and LBFR (p = 0.05). During set-2 LBFR resulted in greater activation of the VM-RMS (LOW 47.7 ± 11.5% MVIC, LBFR 67.0 ± 20.0% MVIC) compared to LOW, as well as during set-3 (LOW 51.4 ± 8.6% MVIC, LBFR 69.53 ± 20.5% MVIC). There was a significant difference in deoxyhemoglobin signal (deoxy-[Hb+Mb]) between LBFR and LOW during set-2 (LBFR 13.1 ± 5.2 μM, LOW 6.7 ± 7.9 μM), set-3 (LBFR 14.6 ± 6 μM, LOW 6.9 ± 7.4 μM), and set-4 (LBFR 13.8 ± 5.9 μM, LOW 7.8 ± 8.5 μM). Total hemoglobin concentration [THC] was significantly higher during LBFR compared to LOW (p = 0.03). Immediately post maximal eccentric exercise all groups showed a significant decrease in MVIC torque (LOW 74.2 ± 14.1%, LBFR 75 ± 5.1%, CON 53 ± 18.6%), with LOW and LBFR resulted in a smaller decrease compared to CON. At 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours post maximal eccentric exercise both LOW and LBFR did not demonstrate a significant force deficit from baseline. Conclusion: The results of the current investigations suggest that the LBFR condition resulted in increased metabolic stress, as shown by the greater deoxy-[Hb+Mb] response and increased blood volume (increased [THC]), as well as greater neuromuscular activation compared to LOW. In spite of the considerable differences observed in the preconditioning exercise stimulus, there was no difference observed in the protective effect inferred by LOW and LBFR preconditioning. However, both LOW and LBFR resulted in a significant protective effect. Further studies are necessary to determine the mechanisms responsible for the protective effect conferred by both low-intensity and low-intensity with BFR eccentric actions against maximal eccentric actions induced muscle damage.

However research in this area is limited as most studies fail to control for the confounding effects of normal growth, or employ appropriate training programs. To overcome these limitations it is suggested that researchers should use a within-subject design employing an exercise regime of sufficient intensity. In adults, eccentric training has been shown to have the greatest effect on hypertrophy and strength. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of eccentric training on muscle strength and development in children, using a one arm training model. Seventeen boys in grades 6, 7, and 8 participated in an eight week eccentric elbow flexion training program; three training sessions per week. The program consisted of 2 5 sets of 6 10 reps using progressive resistance. Pre and post test strength (Eccentric and concentric elbow flexion maximal strength by a Biodex System 3 Dynamometer and 1 RM with dumbbells) and bicep thickness measurements were performed. The change in biceps thickness was significantly greater in the training arm versus the non-training arm (7.3 +/- 8.3% vs. 0.7 +/- 7.5%) (p0.05). Book excerpt: Abstract: Background Previously, researchers reported performance enhancements following long-term plyometric training in athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (LCA). However, the effects of combined eccentric and plyometric training on measures of isokinetic strength and psychological statues in male athletes have not been examined yet. Knowledge on the effects of combined eccentric and plyometric training help to better plan and program rehabilitations sessions and thus return-to-sports. Objective This study sought to compare the effects of three different rehabilitation training programs, eccentric training (ECC), plyometric training (PLYO), or combined eccentric and plyometric training (COMB), on psychological measures (kinesiophobia [TSK-CF], functional knee assessment, knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score [KOOS], international knee documentation committee 2000 questionnaire [IKDC], and knee flexor and extensor isokinetic muscle performance (peak torque [PT], total work, ratio [R-HQ], and ratio of total work [R-TW]) at different angular velocities post ACL surgery in male elite athletes. Methods Forty elite male athletes from different sports (e.g., athletics, team sports) with ACL reconstruction participated in this study. The study started after a 14-weeks post-surgery rehabilitation program, which was identical for all subjects. After this initial rehabilitation period, athletes were randomly assigned to three experimental groups, ECC (n = 10), PLYO (n = 10), and COMB (n = 10), and a control group (CON: n = 10). Testing was conducted pre- and post-the 6-weeks intervention period and included the TSK-CF, KOOS, and IKDC. Peak torque of the knee extensors/flexors was tested at 90, 180, 240 °/s, after the 6-weeks training program only. Results Participants' adherence rate was 100% across all groups and none reported any training or test-related injury. No significant between-group baseline differences (pre-6-weeks intervention) were observed for any of the reported psychological and muscle strength parameters. Significant group-by-time interactions were found for TSK-CF (p = 0.001, d = 2.85), KOOS (p = 0.001, d = 1.31), and IKDC (p = 0.001, d = 1.07). The post-hoc analyses indicated that COMB showed larger pre-post improvements for all psychological variables (p 0.001, d = 2.95 to 13.15), compared with PLYO, ECC, and CON. Contrast analyses demonstrated that COMB yielded significantly greater improvements compared with CON, PLYO, ECC for all isokinetic parameters at all three angular velocities (all p 0.001, d = 0.99 to 4.61).br
