Book excerpt: This project performed the task of observing and recording the results of the SRA Corrective Reading Program implemented at Cousins Middle School during 2000-2001. The researcher was a faculty member of Cousins Middle School during the time period studied. The primary research questions examined and reported the results of the implemented program concerning the following areas: Student reading achievement on norm-referenced standardized test and whether or not the instituted program aided students in becoming better readers. Students at Cousins Middle School who scored below the 40th percentile on the 1999 Iowa Test of Basic Skills participated in the SRA program. Students who participated in the classes received one period of daily instruction. Qualifying Title I students earned academic credits for the reading intervention. Conducting a literature review provided sufficient background knowledge the researcher. Because of the completion of the literature review, direction for the research was substantiated. A methodological process occurred to provide a template for the study. Project design, data collection, analytical methods, and limitations of the study were reported as part of the methodology. The findings reported the students' performance on the Stanford-9 reading test. The specific areas reported: reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading total, and core scores were discussed. Student, teacher, and administration satisfaction with the SRA reading program was revealed. Because of the research, recommendations and implications of the research were provided.

Book excerpt: Students consistently struggle to achieve adequate levels of proficiency on state and national reading assessments. A quasi-experimental design was used to examine the effects of Response to Intervention (RTI) on middle school students' skills in reading and academic achievement. Also, the study sought to examine how the implementation of RTI changed over time. The sample population consisted of approximately 285 students in Grades 6 through 8 and 39 staff from one middle school in middle Tennessee. Conclusions revealed that students receiving RTI did not improve significantly compared to below grade level readers that did not receive reading intervention; however, paired samples t-tests revealed intervention students in each grade level showed significant improvements in overall comprehension scores.

Early childhood education, testing, reading, special education, discipline, loss of the arts, and school facilities, are all areas experiencing reform in the wrong direction. This book says “no” to the reforms that fail, and challenges Americans to address the real student needs that will fix public schools and make America strong.

Book excerpt: Of the many issues facing special education (and general education) today, it is difficult to imagine one more important or timely than response to intervention (RTI). Almost overnight RTI has become standard practice across the nation. Unfortunately, RTI remains ill-defined, falls far short of its evidence-based practice goal, is almost invariably misused, and often results in more harm than good. Nevertheless, as a conceptual framework RTI has great potential for ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate, evidence-based instruction. The mission of this handbook is to present a comprehensive and integrated discussion of response to intervention (RTI) and its relation to multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in both special education and general education. Although the two terms are currently used interchangeably, distinct differences exist between them. Therefore, chapters are dedicated to distinguishing the two concepts—RTI and MTSS—and describing each one’s unique role in both general and special education. In addition, the authors recommend a third term, Multi-Tiered Instruction, to differentiate the practices related to the purpose of the specific intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of current research on the development of reading skills as well as practices to assist educational professionals with assessment, prevention, and intervention for students with reading difficulties. The book reviews the Componential Model of Reading (CMR) and provides assessment techniques, instructional recommendations, and application models. It pinpoints specific cognitive, psychological, and environmental deficits contributing to low reading skills, so educators can accurately identify student problems and design and implement appropriate interventions. Chapters offer methods for assessing problems in decoding, word and sound recognition, and comprehension. In addition, chapters emphasize the recognition of student individuality as readers and learners, from understanding distinctions between difficulties and disabilities to the effects of first-language orthography on second-language learning. Topics featured in this book include: Learning the structure of language at the word level. Reading comprehension and reading comprehension difficulties Assessing reading in second language learners. Effective prevention and intervention for word-level reading difficulties. The neurobiological nature of developmental dyslexia. Reading Development and Difficulties is a must-have resource for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in varied fields, including child and school psychology; assessment, testing, and evaluation; social work; and special education. "I think the book has the potential to be a game changer. It will certainly challenge the expectations of policy makers, not to mention the teachers of beginning readers. These chapters will enhance the knowledge base of those in our schools who are charged with the lofty task of assuring that children have the best possible opportunities to acquire the skill of reading.” Sir Jim Rose Chair and author of Independent Review of the Teaching of Early Reading: Final Report (2006)

Book excerpt: Many middle school students with intellectual disabilities fail to make adequate progress because they lack necessary skills, knowledge, and motivation. The purpose of this study is to explore two questions in the context of reading intervention for students with intellectual disabilities. First, in what ways can additional one-to-one reading intervention, along with small group instruction, with the use of Corrective Reading (CR) impact the students' overall reading performance, including oral reading fluency, and reading comprehension? Second, in what ways can additional one-to-one reading intervention, along with small group instruction influence students' reading behaviors? The study found that, with additional one-to-one intervention, along with small group instruction, and with the use of Corrective Reading curriculum did have a positive impact on students' reading skills and reading behavior.
