Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, concern about disruptive behaviour in secondary schools had grown, being variously regarded as a symptom of a decaying society or as a failure on the teachers’ part. One response was to ‘throw money’ at the problem and various different kinds of special schools and units had been devised to deal with disruptive adolescent pupils. Yet there was little systematic evaluation of the different options – particularly in terms of cost effectiveness. Originally published in 1983, this book reviews all the available research on 21 alternative systems for the education of disruptive adolescents at the time. These range from the highly expensive residential special schools to on-site adaptations which involve no extra cost. Most are based on developments in Britain and the United States and the author concludes in favour of many of the less sophisticated systems. This book will be interesting historical reading for workers and students in educational psychology, special education and educational policy.

Book excerpt: The use of positive reinforcement in acquisition programming is a hallmark of Applied Behavior Analysis; however, the Precision Teaching literature reveals a lack of reporting on the use of reinforcement. The present study utilized a groups design and single case analyses to investigate the effect of programming systematic tangible reinforcement on acquisition performance, retention and endurance of academic skills with 10 typically developing students ranging from 5-7 years of age. Results indicate that for both control and experimental participants, an increase in accuracy on both See/Say sight words and math problems occurred; however, the experimental group performed better on See/Say sight words and both groups performed the same with See/Say math problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contingent relationship between actions and their consequences lies at the heart of Skinner’s experimental analysis of behavior. Particular patterns of behavior emerge depending upon the contingencies established. Ferster and Skinner examined the effects of different schedules of reinforcement on behavior. An extraordinary work, Schedules of Reinforcement represents over 70,000 hours of research primarily with pigeons, though the principles have now been experimentally verified with many species including human beings. At first glance, the book appears to be an atlas of schedules. And so it is, the most exhaustive in existence. But it is also a reminder of the power of describing and explaining behavior through an analysis of measurable and manipulative behavior-environment relations without appealing to physiological mechanisms in the brain. As en exemplar and source for the further study of behavioral phenomena, the book illustrates the scientific philosophy that Skinner and Ferster adopted: that a science is best built from the ground up, from a firm foundation of facts that can eventually be summarized as scientific laws.

Book excerpt: Understanding and enforcing proper discipline has been a barrier to effective behavior modification. Inappropriate interventions can promote unwanted behaviors that often detract from a successful learning environment. Adopting a prevention-oriented approach like School Wide Positive Behavioral Support (SWPBS) plans focus on improving behavioral as well academic results within schools. This study aims to prove that SWPBS plans increase the success rate of an institution. As success rates of schools are evaluated using standardized test scores, this study analyzes the relationship between positive reinforcement and students’ performance on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) in 21 Pennsylvania middle schools from 2015-2018. English and Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science PSSA scores two years before and two years after implementation of a SWPBS plan are compared to PSSA scores of schools in similar size and geographical location that did not implement a SWPBS plan. This data is also compared to research from other studies to draw overarching conclusions to describe the importance of positive reinforcement in school success. Results from this study show that PSSA scores dropped slightly in Math and English but scores dropped significantly in Science following the first implements of a SWPBS. Future studies need to be conducted before an overarching conclusion can be made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2004 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title According to Stephen Ray Flora, reinforcement is a very powerful tool for improving the human condition despite often being dismissed as regarding people as less than human and as "overly simplistic." This book addresses and defends the use of reinforcement principles against a wide variety of attacks. Countering the myths, criticisms, and misrepresentations of reinforcement, including false claims that reinforcement is "rat psychology," the author shows that building reinforcement theory on basic laboratory research is a strength, not a weakness, and allows unlimited applications to human situations as it promotes well-being and productivity. Also examined are reinforcement contingencies, planned or accidental, as they shape behavioral patterns and repertoires in a positive way.
