Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of read alouds on eighteen second graders' vocabulary acquisition and comprehension when listening to stories with and without companion texts. Following each reading session, the students were required to complete a 100 word cloze comprehension test, as well as a brief vocabulary test based on five key words. The results of the study showed that there was a significant effect for order for both comprehension and vocabulary acquisition; students listening to the stories with companion texts outperformed students without companion texts on both comprehension and vocabulary measure when the companion text condition followed the non-companion text condition. Implications of results are presented. Appended materials include: (1) Vocabulary Test--With Book--Without Book; (2) Cloze Test--With Book--Without Book; (3) Running Records, 100 Words--5 Key Vocabulary Words; and (4) A letter to second grade parents. (Contains 9 tables.) [M.A. Thesis, Kean University.].

Book excerpt: Reading involves decoding and comprehension components and, to become efficient, it requires a large number of cognitive and linguistic processes. Among those, the phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, the decoding, the fluency, the lexical development and the text comprehension development. The reading comprehension is strongly related with the development of vocabulary, oral language, linguistic skills, memory skills and ability to make inferences, and the world experiences of each individual. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting difficulties in learning how to read. The difficulty using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme and phoneme to the word reading construction characterizes the dyslexia, which is a specific learning disorder with a neurological source. These difficulties presented by students with dyslexia interfere in their learning process impairing the learning development. Knowing and following the reading development and its processes, as well as obtaining the punctuation of fluency abilities and students comprehension allow us to understand what happens when the student presents difficulties to read. This could help in the identification of learning disabilities and in the development of intervention programs.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study compared the effects of sustained silent readings and repeated readings on oral reading fluency and comprehension of at-risk students from a 2nd grade class in an urban school with low performance on WJ-III subtests and DIBELS fall benchmark assessments. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used. Intervention was conducted over a 4-16 week period consisting of Repeated Reading. Variables measured were reading fluency: number of correct words read per minute and reading comprehension: number of comprehension items answered correctly. During baseline condition (sustained silent reading) students read grade level passages independently and silently for 10 minutes. They were tested in fluency and comprehension during one minute timings. During the interventions condition (paired repeated reading) students worked in pairs, taking turns reading the passage orally for 10 minutes. They were also tested in fluency and comprehension during one minute timings. The dependent variables in this study were number of words read per minute and the number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency and comprehension skills stayed consistent with sustained silent readings, but improved with repeated readings.

Book excerpt: After pre assessing students in a third grade classroom, the researcher noted four students, scoring below the 20th Percentile on the reading portion of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) exam, fall, 2008, in a pilot study. As the researcher further assessed these students, it was noted that these students lacked fluency and vocabulary skills. Focusing on fluency combined with individual, vocabulary instruction, the researcher individualized each of the students' reading program within the regular education classroom. Each of the four students was working at their current level of reading, entering the third grade and progressing throughout the school year. The researcher used a combination of the Power Reading program and coupled it with individual, vocabulary strategies to assist readers with fluency and comprehension. As their reading progressed, students were challenged to next levels. Data was analyzed using the NWEA assessment, Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reading Assessment and Kansas State Reading Assessments during the course of the school year to mark progress. All four students in year one exited the bottom quartile of the NWEA, gained two reading levels according the Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reading Assessments and scored in the top twelve percent of the Kansas State Reading Assessments. The pilot study was replicated in the school year, 2009-2010, Year Two, with ten students with similar needs.
