Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the effects of irradiation and plastic deformation on the yield surfaces of polycrystalline copper. It was found that the principal effect of plastic deformation on unirradiated copper was to translate the yield surface without appreciably changing its size or shape. Irradiation, on the other hand, produced a very large change in the overall size of the initial yield surface; in other words, it produced an effect phenomenologically similar to extensive isotropic strain-hardening. In addition, the shape of the initial yield surface after irradiation was dependent on the plastic strain offset chosen to define yield. This effect was not observed for the unirradiated metal. Extensive plastic deformation after irradiation caused the yield surface to translate and grow smaller without significantly changing shape. (Author).

The loop shape became constant after a few cycles while the peak stress increased for a few hundred cycles. The effect of sudden changes in temperature or in strain rate on the flow stress was observed and comparison tests were made on similar crystals strained unidirectionally. It is concluded that the frequency factor of the thermally activated process controlling the strain rate is higher in the cyclically hardened crystals. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effects of neutron irradiation on age-hardening alloys are of great importance in determining the usefulness of these alloys in reactors and are, in addition, of fundamental interest in determining the basic mechanisms of radiation effects. Most of the work has been on alloys irradiated as supersaturated solid solutions, although some data are available for specimens irradiated in the aged condition. Irradiation can enhance solid state diffusion sufficiently to initiate precipitation or to allow growth of existing precipitates, which can lead to overaging. In addition, precipitate nuclei can be redissolved by neutron irradiation. Either overaging or re-solution will reduce the strength of the alloy and will affect physical properties as well.

Book excerpt: Ultrasonic irradiation of approx. 25 w/sq cm at 20 kc may increase the critical resolved shear stress by a factor of 4 in 99.999% pure aluminium single crystals. This acoustic hardening is accompanied by a yield-point phenomenon, which, in its graphical appearance, resembles effects by neutron irradiation with no sound applied. Hardening by ultrasound and by neutron irradiation are compared, and effects of the superposition of fast neutrons and intense ultrasound in aluminium single crystals having diameters between 0.6 and 1.5 mm are presented. Increases were found to amount to as much as a factor of 14 in the critical resolved shear stress of these crystals compared to untreated samples. Simultaneously, the electric resistivity increased with combined treatment by 3.2 times over untreated samples. The results from these investigations are discussed in the light of present theories of neutron and acoustic radiation damage. (Author).
