Book excerpt: Research suggests that as many as a quarter of all undergraduate students may find themselves on academic probation during their collegiate years. If students on probation choose to return to their institutions the semester following notification, they find themselves in a unique transitional period between poor academic performance and either dismissal or recovery. Effectively supporting students through this transition may help to decrease equity gaps in higher education. As recent literature implies, the same demographic factors that affect students’ retention and persistence rates (e.g., gender, race and ethnicity, age) also affect the rate at which students find themselves on academic probation. This book serves as a resource for practitioners and institutional leaders. The volume presents a variety of interventions and institutional strategies for supporting the developmental and emotional needs of students on probation in the first year and beyond. The chapters in this book are the result of years of dedication and passion for supporting students on probation by the individual chapter authors. While the chapters reflect a culmination of combined decades of personal experiences and education, collectively they amount to the beginning of a conversation long past due. Scholarship on the impact of academic recovery models on student success and persistence is limited. Historically, attention and resources have been directed toward establishing and strengthening the first-year experience, sophomore programs, and student-success efforts to prevent students from ending up on academic probation. However, a focus on preventative measures without a consideration of academic recovery program design considering the successes of these programs is futile. This volume should be of interest to academics and practitioners focused on creating or refining institutional policies and interventions for students on academic probation. The aim is to provide readers with the language, tools, and theoretical points of view to advocate for and to design, reform, and/or execute high-quality, integrated academic recovery programs on campus. Historically, students on probation have been an understudied and underserved population, and this volume serves as a call to action.

Book excerpt: This research was a part of a series of studies designed to evaluate the impact of a goal setting strategy entitled About2Be on the engagement and goal setting for probationary college students in the second semester of their freshman year. A quasi-experimental research design was administered utilizing qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of this intervention. The About2Be Program is designed to encourage students to examine their future and think about goals that are important to them in three categories: career, personal, and academic. The program's structure and activities help students recognize that strengths and areas of challenge are part of everyone's life, and how people plan and reflect on their goals during development can increase success. Additionally, the project sought a strategy that could be taught in such a way that would effectively engage students (e.g., depict information using multiple means of representation). Study participants included freshmen students deemed probationary based on their grade point average (GPA) after their first semester of college during the fall of 2017 (according to the university's GPA policies for good academic standing). Study data included rubric scores from pre and post mission statements, observation data, questionnaires, and usability surveys. No statistically significant differences were found from quantitative analysis between rubric scores on participants' pre and post mission statements. However, themes gathered through qualitative analysis of those mission statements, student feedback surveys and focus groups, and teacher observation data provided valuable information to inform future revisions to the curriculum and future evaluation studies setting resources.

Book Synopsis The Relative Effects of Goal-Setting, Values Plus Goal-Setting, and Information Provision on the Adjustment of College Freshman by : Joanna L. Kaye

This book was released on 2016 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from high school to college can be difficult and often leads to maladjustment, psychopathological symptoms, and student attrition. Prevention efforts are needed to help freshmen adjust to college. Young adults often have low self-control and increased rates of temporal discounting (the weakening of consequence effects due to delay), which are in turn associated with maladjustment and maladaptive behaviors. Two methods that might improve self-control and temporal discounting and, accordingly, freshman adjustment to college, are goal-setting and values interventions. These programs aim to help freshmen set effective goals and clarify and commit to what is important to them. An assessment of the effects of these programs might include as comparison a program that provides students with education about university resources, which is the current standard for helping freshmen adjust to college. The current study sought to determine the differential impacts of goal-setting, values plus goal-setting, and education interventions on adjustment to college, quality of life, retention, and maladaptive behaviors. The study also aimed to examine whether changes in these variables were moderated or mediated by changes in self-control and temporal discounting. College freshmen (N = 168) completed surveys and were randomly assigned to complete a single-session online goal-setting, values plus goal-setting, or education intervention at the beginning of the first quarter of college. After the first quarter, they completed endpoint surveys that assessed key variables. Results revealed that participants in the goal-setting and values plus goal-setting conditions worsened in adjustment and psychopathology, whereas adjustment scores and psychopathological symptoms for the participants in the education intervention did not change. The groups did not differ in quality of life or retention rates immediately following the initial academic term, and changes in self-control and temporal discounting did not mediate changes in outcome variables. Notably, almost half of the participants in the values plus goal-setting condition withdrew from the program. Findings suggest that providing concrete information to freshmen about navigating university life helped protect them from the regular deterioration that often occurs during this critical transition period. Additionally, attrition rates and participant responses to free-response questions suggest that the combined values plus goal-setting intervention was not as palatable to many students compared to the education intervention. Findings also indicate that brief goal-setting and values interventions do not effectively improve self-control or rates of temporal discounting. Future research should examine whether changes to the structure of the programs (e.g., in-person delivery, several sessions over the course of the term) or the audience (e.g., older college students, treatment-seeking freshmen) yield different results. Future research might also consider expanding the education program by personalizing information provision or extending program material across the term to determine if such changes further improve freshman adjustment.
