These changes are happening asynchronously among regions, creating asymmetrical changes for species whose life cycles span hemispheres. This dissertation is an attempt to use the effects of global climate change on the annual cycle of the long-distance migratory bird, the Hudsonian Godwit, Limosa haemastica, as a lens for understanding the broader effects of global climate change on all migratory birds. Using geolocation tracking devices and intensive breeding season studies, I show how different populations within the same species are differentially affected by climate change and how this arises because of differences in the climate change regimes experienced by the two populations, but also underlying differences in the amount of flexibility that exists in their respective annual cycles. In response to different climate change regimes, the Hudsonian Godwit populations breeding at Beluga River, Alaska and Churchill, Manitoba are altering the timing of their arrival on their breeding grounds in different ways. Beluga River godwits, which are experiencing only warming climates throughout their annual cycle, have accelerated their arrival on their breeding grounds by nearly 9 days over the past four decades. Churchill godwits, which are experiencing both warming and cooling climates, have instead retarded their arrival by more than 10 days during that same time period. These different trends allow Beluga River godwits to remain properly timed with the period of peak insect abundance and maintain a robust breeding success rate, while Churchill godwits are instead suffering a phenological mismatch and frequent reproductive failure. Beluga River godwits are able to respond to such climatic changes because their annual cycle includes buffer events and flexibility in timing. As a result of this buffer, Beluga River godwits are able to absorb delays caused by extreme weather events that disrupt their northward migration, without suffering reductions in breeding success. Using these findings and an organismenvironment approach to the whole annual cycle, I suggest that those species and populations with larger amounts of flexibility in their annual cycles can withstand significant climatic change, but that those lacking flexibility are in danger of rapidly succumbing to climatic change.

In the Anthropocene, birds are confronted with rapid changes that are highly threatening for some species. Book excerpt: Understanding factors influencing species' distributions and their dynamics over space and time is a fundamental question in ecology that is receiving renewed interest given increasing threats of global climate change to species persistence. Species are shifting their distributions in response to climate change; however in spite of general directional trends northwards and up in elevation there is substantial interspecific variation. The complexity of species' responses is challenging to explain and limits our predictive capacity to anticipate future consequences of climate change. In addition to climatic factors, species' range dynamics are influenced by non-climatic factors including the biotic interactions, demography, dispersal, and the temporal and spatial scale of threatening processes. The objective of this thesis is to test the role of climatic and non-climatic factors on seasonal range dynamics of long-distance migratory birds over multiple spatial scales, in the recent past, present, and in the future. An understanding of the determinants of Nearctic-Neotropical migratory bird distributions across their interconnected seasonal ranges remains unclear, and few climate change vulnerability assessments consider the complement of habitat dependencies required across their annual cycle. To address these research gaps, I applied multiple modeling methods with outcomes that are increasingly process-oriented. These include correlative species distribution models, dynamic occupancy modeling that account for detection probabilities, and coupled species distribution-metapopulation demographic models. Such modeling approaches allow for deeper inferences regarding the biological processes that actually drive shifts in species distributions over space and time. The main findings of my thesis include: (1) biotic vegetation factors improve species distribution model predictive accuracy measures across both seasonal ranges, and this has non-negligible consequences for spatial conservation priorities under climate change, (2) determinants of seasonal distributions of migratory birds tend to be dominated by abiotic factors, while seasonal differences within species suggest a role for dynamic seasonal niches, (3) short-term habitat changes can more strongly influence local extinction probabilities relative to inter-annual variation in weather suggesting that the temporal scale of climate change and habitat loss requires careful consideration, and (4) accounting for multiple sources of uncertainties is essential for improving models and can help inform robust management actions.

Book excerpt: Climate-driven changes in the overall abundance or phenology of food resources may be critical factors affecting migratory populations, which depend on suitable conditions at widely-spaced locations across the planet. Numerous studies have described associations between climatic change and breeding success, survival and the timing of migration among migrant birds, but we used an experimental approach to investigate the causal mechanisms underlying these widely-reported correlations. Specifically, we used food-supplementations to simulate experimentally the impact of changes in food availability across the annual cycle of a model species of long-distance migrant bird, the northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). Food supplementation modified migratory schedules of wheatears by affecting migratory fuelling, but the strength of this impact varied between stages of the annual cycle and between two subspecies with contrasting migration strategies. Food supplementation advanced hatching date of wheatears in the United Kingdom, and led to some supplemented individuals increasing their reproductive output through multiple breeding attempts. Food-supplemented wheatears exhibited higher rates of annual survival than control wheatears, and the strength of this effect was most pronounced on survival of young immediately following fledging. These experiments highlight aspects of wheatear performance that are currently limited by food availability and are thus most sensitive to climate-driven changes in food supply (primarily migratory fuelling, number of breeding attempts and survival). We used experimental manipulations of temperature and soil moisture of upland grassland turfs to simulate the impact of climate change on the abundance and emergence phenology of the wheatear's arthropod prey. Warming by 2o C and low soil moisture levels led to a reduction in arthropod abundance later in the season, indicating how such climate-driven changes would affect food availability to wheatears across the breeding season. These studies together provide experimental evidence for the mechanisms by which climate change is expected to influence population changes in migratory taxa.
