Book Synopsis Fuel Loading and Fire Behavior in the Missouri Ozarks of the Central Hardwood Region by : Jeremy Kolaks
Download or read book Fuel Loading and Fire Behavior in the Missouri Ozarks of the Central Hardwood Region written by Jeremy Kolaks and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildfire suppression, in conjunction with past and current land-use, has altered the vegetative structure and fuel loading of forests in the Ozark Highlands. In a study funded by the Joint Fire Science Program, we collected fuel loading and fire behavior data in the Southeast Missouri Ozarks to determine if aspect and/or treatment has an effect on fuel loading and fire behavior in stands that received either thinning, prescribed fire, both prescribed fire and thinning, or no management (control). Data collected includes fuel loading (tons/acre) in timelag classes used by the National Fire Danger Rating System (1, 10, 100, and 1000-hour) as well as fuel height (in), litter depth (in), and duff depth (in). Fire behavior data collected includes flame length (in) and rate of spread (ft/min), which lead to the calculation of fireline intensity (Btu/ft/sec) and heat per unit area (Btu/ft 2). Total energy released (Btu/unit area) was calculated from the fuel consumed. Passive flame height sensors, consisting of wire solder, fire-retardant treated cotton string, and nylon twine, were also tested and calibrated for use in the Ozark Highlands. Results indicate that aspect and treatment do have an affect on some aspects of fuel loading and fire behavior while not affecting others. Forest managers and ecologist alike will find this information very useful when assessing and developing both long and short-term management actions.

Book Synopsis Models for Planning Wildlife Conservation in Large Landscapes by : Joshua Millspaugh
Download or read book Models for Planning Wildlife Conservation in Large Landscapes written by Joshua Millspaugh and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single-resource volume of information on the most current and effective techniques of wildlife modeling, Models for Planning Wildlife Conservation in Large Landscapes is appropriate for students and researchers alike. The unique blend of conceptual, methodological, and application chapters discusses research, applications and concepts of modeling and presents new ideas and strategies for wildlife habitat models used in conservation planning. The book makes important contributions to wildlife conservation of animals in several ways: (1) it highlights historical and contemporary advancements in the development of wildlife habitat models and their implementation in conservation planning; (2) it provides practical advice for the ecologist conducting such studies; and (3) it supplies directions for future research including new strategies for successful studies.Intended to provide a recipe for successful development of wildlife habitat models and their implementation in conservation planning, the book could be used in studying wildlife habitat models, conservation planning, and management techniques. Additionally it may be a supplemental text in courses dealing with quantitative assessment of wildlife populations. Additionally, the length of the book would be ideal for graduate student seminar course.Using wildlife habitat models in conservation planning is of considerable interest to wildlife biologists. With ever tightening budgets for wildlife research and planning activities, there is a growing need to use computer methods. Use of simulation models represents the single best alternative. However, it is imperative that these techniques be described in a single source. Moreover, biologists should be made aware of alternative modeling techniques. It is also important that practical guidance be provided to biologists along with a demonstration of utility of these procedures. Currently there is little guidance in the wildlife or natural resource planning literature on how best to incorporate wildlife planning activities, particularly community-based approaches. Now is the perfect time for a synthestic publication that clearly outlines the concepts and available methods, and illustrates them. - Only single resource book of information not only on various wildlife modeling techniques, but also with practical guidance on the demonstrated utility of each based on real-world conditions. - Provides concepts, methods and applications for wildlife ecologists and others within a GIS context. - Written by a team of subject-area experts
Book Synopsis The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks, 3rd Edition by : Paul S Johnson
Download or read book The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks, 3rd Edition written by Paul S Johnson and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks is an updated and expanded edition that explores oak forests as responsive ecosystems. New chapters emphasize the importance of fire in sustaining and managing oak forests, the effects of a changing climate, and advanced artificial regeneration techniques. This new edition expands on silvicultural methods for restoring and sustaining oak woodlands and savannahs, and on management of ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat. It also incorporates new material on evaluating landscape-scale, and cumulative effects of management action compared with inaction. Nine of the fifteen chapters cover updated information on the geographic distribution of US oaks, oak regeneration dynamics, site productivity, stocking and stand development, even- and uneven-aged silvicultural methods, and growth and yield. This edition includes a new section with colour illustrations for improved visualization of complex relationships. This book is intended for forest and wildlife managers, ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists, and students of those fields.
