Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of departmentalization on achievement and attendance of fifth-grade students and the job satisfaction of fifth-grade teachers. Data collected included student achievement data, student attendance data, teacher survey results, and focus group interview data. The results of this quasi-experimental cohort design study indicated a marginally significant relationship between departmentalization and academic achievement. Departmentalization did not positively affect student attendance. Both quantitative and qualitative data were used to determine that departmentalization does positively affect teacher job satisfaction. The findings of this study will be used to inform classroom organization decision making efforts at the school and district level.

Book excerpt: In response to the continued pressure placed on American public schools to increase academic achievement, some schools have begun to reorganize instructional environments in an effort to improve student outcomes. The current study examined one such elementary school that implemented a departmentalized model of instruction in fourth and fifth-grade classrooms in an effort to improve student learning. This longitudinal, cross-sectional study followed a sample of students and teachers over a two-year period in an attempt to ascertain how departmentalizing in the elementary school affected student and teacher perceptions and academic achievement among students in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade. Student perceptions of their school, teachers, peers, and academic performance were measured using surveys and standardized achievement test scores were collected. Teacher attitudes toward departmentalization were also measured using surveys. A factor analysis of student survey results with Varimax rotation resulted in ten factors that revealed a consistent pattern of change in student perceptions when correlated. A consistent relationship between students' academic achievement and perceptions at each grade level was not found. Results suggested that students who began switching classes in elementary school had positive perceptions of their teachers and of themselves as social beings in school. Perceptions of their academic abilities, however, separated from their perceptions of their teachers over time. In contrast, students with one teacher in self-contained classrooms had positive perceptions of their teachers. These students' perceptions of their academic abilities and perceptions of themselves as social beings in school were connected to their perceived teacher-student relationships. Elementary teachers expressed concern over meeting their students' emotional needs, but otherwise reported positive attitudes toward their abilities to teach and meet their students' academic needs in a departmentalized setting. Teachers at the elementary school and the middle school felt that students who switched classes in elementary school were more prepared when they got to middle school and adjusted more quickly than students who came from self-contained elementary classrooms.

Book excerpt: Researchers posit that teachers' excessive absences may be caused by a lack of commitment or dissatisfaction with their jobs due to school environments and relationships, and a lack of commitment can ultimately influence student achievement. This correlational study sought to determine any relationship between teachers' absenteeism and job satisfaction as mitigated by perceptions of favoritism. The participants included 38 teachers among 24 primary and secondary schools in a medium-size, rural, school district. This correlational, quantitative research study utilized instruments titled Job Satisfaction Survey and the Nepotism, Favoritism, Cronyism questionnaire to examine the perceptions of job satisfaction and favoritism among 38 primary school and secondary school teachers in a school district in the southeastern United States. Results were analyzed using demographic analyses using the Spearman correlation and the Pearson product-moment correlation to determine the statistical relationship between the variables. The results of the study indicated there is no significant relationship between job satisfaction and attendance. Additionally, there is a significant negative relationship between favoritism and job satisfaction. The results provide beneficial information principals can utilize to better understand the relationship between teachers' absences, job satisfaction, and favoritism in their schools. Continued research related to how teacher job satisfaction and other demographic variables influenced teacher attendance would add to the body of literature.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of professional development schools (PDSs) on student academic achievement in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). PDSs were primarily designed to improve teacher preparation, but also to improve student achievement. The research is the first systematic evaluation of the effects of PDSs on student outcomes in JCPS. By combining two other streams of study-school effects research and Kentucky school reform-the research established a comprehensive model of measuring school effects in PDSs. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was the analytic method used in this research. The Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS), the accountability measurement of Kentucky school reform, was the outcome measure of PDSs in this study. The study used a two-level HLM: student-level and classroom-level. Three models were used: the one-way ANOVA model with random effects, the random coefficient model, and the intercepts-as-outcomes model. The study compares student achievement in classrooms in seven PDS elementary schools with student achievement in classrooms in seven non-PDS elementary schools. Consistent with the literature, three student-level variables-student socioeconomic status (SES), two-parent family status, and minority status-were significant predictors of student achievement in most models. The associations between classroom-level predictors and classroom mean achievement were mixed. Classroom mean SES was a significant predictor in three models. Classroom mean two-parent family status was a significant predictor in two models. Classroom mean minority status was not associated with student outcomes. PDS was associated with higher achievement only in Grade 4 science. The conclusion is that the association between PDS and student achievement differed across four academic outcomes. The uniqueness of this study was that it not only used comparison groups, but also an advanced methodology (HLM) that separated student characteristics from classroom characteristics. By controlling for the difference explained by student characteristics, the researcher identified PDS effects in one outcome.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated the effects of departmentalized and self-contained classroom structures on student achievement of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in Mississippi schools. Historical MCT2 proficiency level percentages were collected from the Mississippi Department of Education website for the following school years: 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013. This data was used to calculate a revised Quality of Distribution Index (QDI-R) for each school included in the study. Using the QDI-R, differences were generated between school year (SY) 2009-2010 and SY 2010-2011; between SY 2010-2011 and SY 2011-2012; and between SY 2011-2012 and SY 2012-2013. This yielded three data points for measuring student achievement in the study. An email questionnaire was distributed to schools in order to determine which structure was being utilized in each school for each grade level. Follow up phone calls were made to those failing to respond to the email request. Once this information was collected, the population of the study included 247 schools serving fourth grade, 242 schools serving fifth grade, and 207 schools serving sixth grade. A one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was conducted for determining if a difference existed between the two structures for each grade level. Findings revealed no significant difference between structures in language arts for grades four, five, or six. There was also no evidence of a significant difference between structures for grade four and five mathematics. A significant difference was found between the two structures for grade six mathematics.

The analysis yields two main findings: First, teachers have arguably causal, statistically significant effects on student absences that persist over time. Second, teachers who improve test scores do not necessarily improve student attendance, suggesting that effective teaching is multidimensional and teachers who are effective in one domain are not necessarily effective in others.

Current SES enrollment practices register a student for SES and thus the student is a participant in SES. No distinction is made between students who enroll and never attend SES tutoring and those who enroll and fully complete programs. This study utilized a data set from Virginia Department of Education of students enrolled in SES during school years 2006-2009 and conducted quantitative analysis of student achievement in relation to the number of SES hours they attended. This study concludes with future research suggestions within SES to better inform policy makers.
