It has undergone dramatic changes over the years, from didactic instruction to service learning; it continues to evolve as more and more schools become involved in teaching students right from wrong. The current emphasis on character education in schools began in the early 1990s as an attempt to alleviate the increasingly violent behavior of students as reported in the media. The purpose of this study was to determine how character education affected the behavior of students. The study involved: observing student behavior; interviewing teachers, students, and parents to determine their perceptions of the effects of the character education program on student behavior; and reviewing disciplinary records to identify behavioral patterns. The findings from this study suggested that character education programs may have a positive effect on student behavior. Furthermore, the findings led to recommendations regarding the implementation of character education programs in elementary schools. Character education should be an integral part of the curriculum, not taught as a separate subject. This includes not only academic subjects but also specialty areas such as art, music, and physical education. Classroom rules should be based on the principles of good character and teachers should model good character for the students to observe. Additionally, students should be taught character through hands-on service activities that contribute to the school, the community, and society in general. This will help the students develop a sense of ownership of the program and should help to improve student behavior.

Book excerpt: This capstone focuses on answering the question, How can character education and community building in a 5th grade classroom positively affect student attitudes? Chapter two, "Literature Review," defines character, summarizes the development of character and morals, discusses the history and importance of character and moral education, and describes aspects and the need for community building in a classroom. Perspectives from many experts such as, Piaget, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Maslow, Noddings, Lickona, Borba, and Knoblock are noted in chapter two. Techniques from these people, as well as from the Responsive Classroom approach, were used in this study. Assessments were based on student surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and teacher observations over a 6 week period. Results demonstrated an overall positive change in student attitudes towards themselves and their classmates, as well as in the areas of empathy, respect, kindness, and citizenship.

Book excerpt: Schools, as a part of society, experience the effects of today's deteriorating families and misbehaving youth. In an effort to positively influence student behavior, schools are emphasizing character education not only in the classroom but also throughout the school. The behavior of twenty-two fifth grade students after eight character education lessons was investigated in this paper. Change in students' behavior was determined mainly be a pre-test and post-test (based on a behavior scale) completed by two teachers who also taught these students in their separate classrooms. In addition, the number of discipline occurrences, absences, tardies and any changes in students' grades were tracked. The results were mixed, with some improved behavior and some regression reported. Some students were not as disruptive, nor were they suspended as frequently. However, the overall academic performance of these students remained the same, with no improvement in grades. The findings were moderately encouraging in some respects, but may have been better if reinforcement of character education outside the classroom had been implemented. A variety of program types which served as models, and inferences drawn from this study, are discussed.

Book excerpt: Throughout history, and in cultures all over the world, education rightly conceived has had two great goals: to help students become smart and to help them become good. They need character for both. Smart & Good High Schools, a 227-page "report to the nation" by Thomas Lickona and Matthew Davidson based on two years of research on American high schools, describes nearly 100 promising practices for developing adolescent character. These practices are organized around a vision aimed at encouraging a paradigm shift in character education: from focusing only on moral character to focusing on both performance character (needed for best work) and moral character (needed for ethical behavior). The report's research included visits to 24 diverse high schools, a comprehensive research review, and the input of a National Experts Panel and a National Student Leaders Panel. --Publisher description.

Book Synopsis The Death of Character by : James Davison Hunter
Download or read book The Death of Character written by James Davison Hunter and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-01-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Death of Character is a broad historical, sociological, and cultural inquiry into the moral life and moral education of young Americans based upon a huge empirical study of the children themselves. The children's thoughts and concerns-expressed here in their own words-shed a whole new light on what we can expect from moral education. Targeting new theories of education and the prominence of psychology over moral instruction, Hunter analyzes the making of a new cultural narcissism.
