Book excerpt: This thesis examines the effect of artistic sensibility and artist identity development on self-esteem in adolescent art therapy clients. Artistic sensibility involves one's capacity of feeling and responding to one's environment, both viscerally and intellectually. Artists advance their artistic sensibility when engaging in the process of creation, which in turn becomes part of their identity. A mixed-method approach utilizing quantitative, qualitative, and arts-based analysis, was used to examine an open studio group therapy model, in which artistic sensibility and artist identity was cultivated through the implementation of fine arts discourse. It was found that developing artistic sensibility and artist identity positively impacts self-esteem in early adolescents. Additionally, data suggest that aesthetics, art history, and exhibition and critique, each impact self-esteem in particular ways. This group model appears to increase self-esteem in adolescent clients due to the relationships made through making art in community, discussing art constructively, and the validation associated with the construction and exhibition of a meaningful art product.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to gain a clearer understanding of the effects that art therapy treatment has on perceptions of loss and self-image with a population of "at-risk" adolescent males. This investigation was carried out in an alternative school for children that had exhausted other public education opportunities. This study involved comparing qualitative interviews conducted with both a treatment group and a non-treatment group upon completion of three months of individual art therapy with the author. Self-image of all participants was assessed at the end of the treatment period using a quantitative scale specifically designed to measure many aspects of self esteem in adolescents. Interviews were analyzed and consistent themes were generated using Grounded Theory of qualitative data analysis. The author had many roles in this research including principal investigator, therapist, alternative school staff member, assessor, and data analyzer. The discussion section of this dissertation suggests possible themes and the ways in which we might learn from these participants and their experiences. Results suggest no differences in self-image or perceptions of loss between treatment group and non-treatment group. Themes that emerged focused around the following: participants viewed themselves as "bad" kids for having been transferred to an alternative school, treatment group participants enjoyed having the opportunity to participate in art therapy, dynamics of the alternative school create both benefits and drawbacks for participants and interview may not be the best means of gathering data from this population. Future investigations along with the possible shortcomings of this research are presented based on the findings of this study.

The study was conducted over a four week time period, during which a two week art therapy experiential occurred. For the entire time period the participant recorded her self-esteem and life satisfaction on a scale of one to five based upon a predetermined target behavior. Overall the results were unclear as to whether the strongest reaction was to the therapy, or the therapist. Results can not be generalized. Additional research on this topic would include having a larger sample size, and limiting the environment to in-patient treatment centers. This study has not only stemmed from an interest In the subject, or from the researcher's own personal experiences, but from the cumulative observations and study of adolescent females. The adolescent females the researcher has observed strive to be everything, and everyone other than themselves. Adolescent females study the photographs in pop culture magazines, and wonder why their thighs do not touch at the top like the models', or why they do not have stretch marks on their breasts; this type of ideation can lead to a distorted sense of self. Although this is a single participant study it represents something much more; the acknowledgement that clearly we [society] are not doing everything we can to promote self knowledge and self-image development among adolescent females. Although the promotion of women into previously male dominated careers is important, the additions of positive female role models are equally important. Adolescent females are struggling for positive role-models, for someone to look up to that is real and that can be defined in more ways than just talking about looks (Pipher, 1994).

Book excerpt: This research paper aims to explore the therapeutic process with young adolescent clients in art therapy through an arts-based inquiry. One of the biggest challenges in young adolescence is the beginning stages of building identity through separation and individuation. Young adolescents within the youth protection system face challenges throughout their development, and they continue to confront challenges to their safety and stability that can compromise healthy development. Response art making can act to deepen our knowledge of our process with clients, through an imaginative and interpretative dialogue. This type of art making can create internal conversations with the client as artist. Art therapy can exist in the symbolic and unconscious realms, and using arts-based inquiry can honour that process and reflect an expansive viewpoint. This arts-based inquiry pointed to the capacity of thematic phases to help guide the process with young adolescents, and deepen the process of understanding. Client response imagery allowed for the contemplation and imagining of the way clients interact with and explore their own inner symbols. The importance of ritual, materials, and self-care became important pieces in the art therapy context. This arts-based inquiry resulted in a visual book which was 20 pages in length and contained 26 images that reflected the themes in the therapeutic process with this client population. This paper focuses on contextualizing the client population, the arts-based research methodology, provides the author’s insights about the topic, and a deeper analysis of the arts-based exploration.
