Book excerpt: Adolescence is a tumultuous time, and for those with risk factors, it can be even more difficult. This study examined the relationships among intrinsic and extrinsic protective factors such as high self-esteem, high self-efficacy, mattering to others, positive sense of identity, and healthy peer relationships in female adolescents. Additionally, the current study assessed the impact of a positive youth development intervention designed for this particular population. The potential sample consisted of adolescent girls who were students at an alternative high school in the Southwestern region of the United States. Of the 25 girls at the school, 12 participated in the study and completed pre-test instruments measuring self-esteem, self-efficacy, mattering to friends and parents, identity distress, and relational aggression. The instruments were administered before and after a positive youth development intervention of which 10 of the 12 participants attended.

Book excerpt: Adolescents are faced with daily obstacles that affect their ability to progress into adulthood successfully. Rising divorce rates and subsequent single parenting, adolescent pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and lack of parental involvement represent only a few of the many issues teens confront. School nurses are on the front lines, attempting to educate youth against an alarming rise in personal and social controversies that impede their ability to come to school ready to learn. As part of the educational team, school nurses are in a prime position to develop and integrate intervention strategies aimed at assisting adolescents during this tumultuous period in their lives. Research has linked self-esteem and social support with health compromising behaviors. Likewise, research has suggested a link between support group participation and a decrease in health compromising behaviors. School-based support groups are one intervention strategy that is currently being used to improve students' self-esteem and social support. The purpose of this research is to evaluate their efficacy on self-esteem and social support. Thirty-seven students from an urban Southwestern high school participated in a 10-week support group. Self-esteem and social support were measured using Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale and the Personal Resource Questionnaire Part II. Results suggested that self-esteem and social support were moderately, positively correlated and, while students who participated in support groups did not report a statistically significant change in either self-esteem or social support, further research is needed to explore the relationship between these variables.

Book excerpt: Seligman (2012) suggested that the development, practice, and use of character strengths allows individuals to be at their best, because character strengths are manifestations of individuals’ potential. Although empirical evidence supports the idea that adults’ endorsement and use of character strengths is associated with positive outcomes, there is limited research to support that this type of intervention has the same effect on adolescents. The current study tested the effectiveness of an established character strength intervention in high school health classes in an adolescent sample (N = 119). This intervention had to do with the labeling and increased use of character strengths particularly central to the person, often referred to as signature strengths. Participants who were assigned the signature strength exercise for one week did not demonstrate an increase in life satisfaction, nor did they demonstrate an increase in general or academic self-esteem. Interestingly, the intervention group had a significant reduction in their academic self-esteem. The findings of the current study suggest that we may not see an improvement in the areas of life satisfaction or self-esteem when implementing a brief signature strength intervention in a secondary classroom setting with an adolescent sample.

Book excerpt: Many adverse conditions place adolescent girls at risk for developing negative outcomes as adults, including poverty, living in violent and dysfunctional families, and a history of victimization. Yet many children who are at risk for becoming delinquent develop into competent and productive adults. These individuals have been found to possess protective factors that meditate or moderate effects of negative life events. An external sense of control and poor self-esteem has been linked to several maladaptive behaviors, including delinquency among adolescent girls. A review of the literature revealed that adolescent girls who find their way into the juvenile justice system share many of the same problems as their male counterparts as well as problems that are unique to their gender. the present study is a program evaluation of a gender-specific structured group intervention that was offered to adolescent delinquent girls residing in non-secure residential programs in New York State. the purpose of the study was to learn if a gender-specific support group, the Girls' Circle, impacted upon the locus of control and self-esteem amongst girls who participated in the program. the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children was used to determine each participant's perceived locus of control and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale was used to evaluate self-esteem measures, before and after the implementation of the support group. Data collected were analyzed using the independent samples t-test and the paired samples t-test. Based on the results of the independent samples t-test, posttest self-esteem scores in the experimental group were not significantly different from posttest self-esteem scores in the control group. Paired samples t-tests revealed significant between group differences in self-esteem from pretest to posttest. These results suggest that although participation in the 8-week gender-specific structured group did not result in a significant increase in self-esteem scores between groups, there was a significant within group difference. Differences in posttest locus of control scores between the treatment group and the control group were found to be marginally statistically significant, suggesting an improvement in inner control following the intervention. the results of these findings offer important information on serving the needs of at-risk adolescent girls as well as girls already entrenched within the juvenile justice system. Study implications and recommendations for future research are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Low levels of self-esteem have been supported by research as a predisposing factor to a number of negative outcomes. Female youth approaching adolescence have been supported as demonstrating the greatest risk for low levels of self-esteem. Low levels of self-esteem in adolescent females as indicated by previous research often manifests itself in devastating physical, mental, and social health issues such as depression, dating violence, substance use, as well as others. The purpose of this project was to write a grant proposal to potentially seek funds for a psychoeducation group focusing on the prevention of low levels of self-esteem. The groups are focused on identifying risk factors and engaging protective ones. The grant writer selected The Ueberroth Family Foundation as a potential funding source for the proposed project. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Minority girls in the United States are at a higher risk of negative life outcomes such as early pregnancy, promiscuity, drug use and low academic achievement than their Caucasian counterparts. These outcomes have been associated with various sociocultural influences that have ultimately affected the self esteem of these girls, especially during the stage of adolescence. This thesis is a curriculum that combines the knowledge of the developmental stage of adolescence, the causal factors associated with lowered self esteem, and elements of Cognitive Behavioral and Relational Cultural Theories to form a series of sessions that seek to equip preadolescent and early adolescent girls with the knowledge and cultural support they need to develop self-esteem. This curriculum addresses, the topics of (a) ethnic identity, (b) wellness, (c) sociocultural influences, and (d) social skills. This curriculum was designed to be used in a school-setting with girls before they transfer into middle school.

Book excerpt: The effectiveness of a high school girls group was examined using a pretest-post-test group design with young adolescent girls identified as having low self-esteem. Individuals were identified by teachers and counselors as having low self-esteem or being at risk for having low self-esteem. This research project includes a literature review that explored self-understanding and its dimensions of self-concept and self-esteem, as well as how this research relates to development. The curriculum used came from the Girls In Real Life Situations (GIRLS) group program created by Julia V. Taylor and Shannon Trice-Black (2007). The research study was conducted at a high school in a rural west Texas town. A total of 12 adolescent females with a mean age of 17.0 years completed a pretest before the start of the 12-week program and a post-test at the end of the program. The GIRLS program provided support for participants to understand more about themselves in relation to the typical issues that individuals their age often experience. There was a significant difference in the predicted direction between post-test and pretest scores.
