Every year, a one-day grief camp, called Camp Oz is held to assist these bereaved children's needs. To investigate the effectiveness of Camp Oz, parents and children were asked to fill out a satisfaction survey. The results of 2014 Evaluation indicated 80 % of parents and 86% of children were satisfied with Camp Oz. Children were able to remember their loved one, feel safe, enjoy activities, express their story, and make a connection with others. They were less likely to report growth in emotions and behaviors, and learning about grief and coping skills. In 2015, all of the participants were satisfied with Camp Oz. Especially, they were highly satisfied with the experience of feeling safety and making a connection with others, whereas they were less satisfied with development of coping skills and expression of emotions. Through the results, implications and recommendations for future interventions are discussed.

Campers were observed, interacted with and given a survey at the end of the grief camp experience focused on uncovering the benefits of the grief camp. The purpose of this study was to examine the camp experience as an added layer of supprt for bereaved children. Lack of education of children's grief styles and processes often create situations in which children are not permitted to grieve in a way natural to them (Worden, 1996). Results of the study strongly suggest the grief camp experience provided an added alyer of support and allowed children to process their grief in a healthy way as well as learn positive coping skills that could be continued beyond the camp experience to promote healthy grieving.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to identify and describe the specific beneficial elements of Camp Comfort, an innovative weekend grief support program for children. The sample of children included 29 boys and girls who had lost a member of their family in the past year. The study used an empirically rigorous methodology known as concept mapping. The children participated in a three step research process including brainstorming the benefits of camp, sorting and rating the camp benefits, and completing standardized scales of quality of life, depression and coping. A five cluster model of camp benefits was constructed including Attachment and Connections, Traditional Camp, Acceptance and Expression, Escape from Grief-related Stress at Home, and Kid-Friendly Environment. There were significant changes in the direction of healthy coping on several scales for both the younger and older children. No changes were observed on the measures of depression or quality of life. The implications of the benefits concept map and suggestions for research and practice are considered.
