The formulations cosisted of examples of three types of protective agents, viz. oily films, soft(grease-like) films, and hard(resin-like) films. All three types of formulation used were effective in reducing rates of stress-corrosion crack growth in laboratory tests. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effectiveness of six commercial water-displacing corrosion preventive formulations (WDCP's) in inhibiting corrosion of two aluminum alloys used in aircraft construction has been investigated. Two solutions, 0.1 molar sodium chloride and 0.1 molar sodium chloride-0.18 molar aluminum chloride, were chosen to simulate aircraft service environments in the laboratory tests. Testing was done by treating specimens with WCDP's prior to exposure to the corrosive media and also by immersing specimens in the test media and then adding WDCP's to these solutions. Evaluation was by weight loss measurements and subsequent microscopic examination. In some of the tests. A novel method of estimating weight loss (during the course of a test) by analysis of small samples of solution was used. All six WDCP's tested were found to inhibit corrosion of the aluminum alloys significantly under the test conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: It was shown that stress-corrosion cracks will propagate from a fatigue-precrack in 7075-T651 aluminum alloy exposed to various organic environments; stress-corrosion cracks will not, however, initiate in smooth specimens. Evidence is presented which indicates that the crack propagation is probably not due to traces of water absorbed in the oxide film at the crack tip or in the environments. The stress-corrosion crack growth rate was measured in ethanol and carbon tetrachloride as a function of the plane-strain stress-intensity factor K. The results of a fractographic analysis of the fracture surfaces are described. Evidence is presented to show that some limited dissolution of aluminum in the environments occurs and it is suggested that, as with aqueous stress-corrosion of aluminum alloys, an electrochemical reaction is involved in the cracking. This is followed by sections dealing with (1) the historical development and growth in awareness of the problem, (2) the mechanisms involved, and (3) the theory of stress-corrosion cracking. A section on experimental techniques is presented. These techniques include test methods used to determine the susceptibility of alloys to stress-corrosion cracking, as well as more refined methods of studying the fundamental mechanisms of the problem. Different evaluation methods, applicable to obtaining the different objectives of stress-corrosion testing, are also presented. All of the foregoing serve as background to the sections on stress-corrosion-cracking behavior of aluminum alloys and preventive measures. (Author).

Book excerpt: This research used the breaking load method to determine the effects of alternate immersion in sea water on uncoated acid-anodized & hard anodized specimens of aluminium alloy 7075-T651 in order to evaluate the benefits of anodizing the aluminum pressure hull of an autonomous underwater vehicle to reduce the risk of stress corrosion cracking. The original test method showed the extent of delay of the onset of stress corrosion cracking provided by anodizing specimens subjected to an externally applied stress of 69 megapascals. The effect of anodizing on the onset of intergranular cracking in the absence of an external stress was also examined. The value of the threshold stress determined for the uncoated specimens was compared to the range reported by an interlaboratory test program. A new statistical procedure involving Box-Cox transformation was applied to alleviate problems noted in the interlaboratory program and to confirm the conclusion reached by the original test method.
