Book excerpt: Revision is a fundamental part of writing and the acquisitionof revision skills is a complex and lengthy process. This book drawstogether current research on revision from two areas. The first is thelarge body of empirical work on the cognitive processes involved inthe revision of written language production. This research looks athow operations of revision intervene during various phases of writing, at the resources or constraints (e.g., working memory load, contentknowledge, strategy use) that affect revision and at developmentalaspects of revision capabilities. The second area of research concernsthe study of students learning to revise texts in instructionalsettings. This research examines the effects of instructional designconditions (structure and sequencing of tasks, strategy instruction, word processing) and the impact of peer interactions on studentacquisition of revision skills. The contributions by European and North American specialists providenew insights into revision processes and raise new questions about theinterplay between cognitive and instructional factors. The authorspresent critical reviews of research findings, as well as recentempirical work conducted in experimental and classroom settings."Revision" is an essential resource for researchers in cognitive, developmental and educational psychology who are interested inlanguage acquisition, and for professionals of language instruction, including pre-service and in-service teacher training.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of word processing on the quality and quantity of fifth grade students' writing during structured Writer's Workshop in the classroom. A select group of students, a little more than half, used a word processor to perform the steps of Writer's Workshop while the other half of the class used paper and pencil. The teacher met individually with all 26 students three times throughout the research period to offer help and set goals. Writing samples from each student were collected three times and scored based on number of sentences, quality of content, and use of correct writing conventions. Throughout the process, the teacher expected that the students who used word processing software would improve their writing conventions and be more motivated to write, resulting in a larger quantity of writing versus the students writing on paper. All students received the same instruction, modeling, and gradual release through the Writer's Workshop lessons. The author observed that students who used the word processor did produce more writing and had made greater improvements on their writing samples.

Book excerpt: The need for a comprehensive volume that reviews both the processes and issues involved in developing, administering, and validating large-scale assessment programs has never been greater. These programs are used for many purposes, including instructional program evaluation, promotion, certification, graduation, and accountability. One of the greatest problems we face is how to deal with special needs and bilingual populations. Examining these processes and issues is the mission of this book. It is organized into the following five sections: Introduction, Validity Issues, Technical Issues, Implementation Issues, and Epilogue. Each chapter follows a common structure: Overview of critical issues, review of relevant research, descriptions of current assessment methodologies, and recommendations for the future research and practice. Written by nationally recognized scholars,Large-Scale Assessment Programs for All Students: Validity, Technical Adequacy, and Implementation will appeal to anyone seriously involved in large scale testing, including educators, policymakers, testing company personnel, and researchers in education, psychology, and public policy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of word processing on student's written language conventions. The author ran this study with two sixth-grade language arts classes. One class was asked to word process all writing assignments. The other class was required to hand write their writing assignments. Based on Morphy and Graham's (2012) meta-analysis, the researcher predicted that students who word process their writing assignments will display greater quality and quantity in their writings. After analyzing an initial writing sample, the teacher asked for three additional samples which were scored for 1) a count of total words written and 2) correct word sequences. Students in the test group also were given mini-lessons on word processing. The word processing class performed slightly better than the handwriting class, and students also learned useful skills such as keyboarding, computer skills, document formatting, and file transfer. The author resolved to implement word processing for all classes in the future.
