This book was released on 1993 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermomechanical processing was conducted on cast 6061 Al-A12O3 metal matrix composites (MMCs) containing either 10 or 20 volume percent of alumina (A1203) particles. These materials were provided by DURALCAN-USA, Inc., of San Diego, CA in conjunction with a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) program on ductility enhancement for these MMCS. Processing included isothermal forging and rolling of materials at 500 deg C, with interpass anneal (IPA) times of 5 or 30 minutes. Isothermal rolling was also accomplished on 1.0 inch thick 6061-T6 Al plate. Processed materials were solution heat treated at temperatures ranging from 480-560 deg C, and were then age hardened at 160 deg C. Tensile testing was conducted to evaluate strength and ductility. Homogeneity of the particle distribution was improved by processing for both composites and no microstructural damage was apparent. Lower solution heat treatment temperature provided significant ductility enhancement while the longer IPA time at 500 deg C had a minor beneficial effect. As the percentage of reinforcement increased, aging time to peak strength decreased; peak strength, and yield strength increased; and ductility decreased. As the solution heat treatment temperature was decreased ductility was enhanced at a cost of peak strength.

Book excerpt: Thermomechanical processing was conducted on a cast aluminum-based metal matrix composite. The material studied was 6061 aluminum containing 10 volume percent of alumina (Al2O3) particles, fabricated by casting and subsequently extruded by DURALCAN, Inc. Processing included isothermal rolling of an extruded bar to large strain values. As a result of rolling at 500 C, strength was increased, but with a substantial loss of ductility. Further strengthening was realized by rolling at 350 C and no further ductility loss was seen. Homogeneity of the particle dispersion was considerably improved with no evidence of microstructural damage. Upon subsequent solution heat treatment, ductility of the rolled materials was restored to values greater than obtained in material experiencing only extrusion. Also, the strength of the rolled material exceeded that of material heat treated after extrusion. Upon subsequent aging treatment (aging at 160 C), the increased strength and ductility enhancement persisted.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work includes a comprehensive analysis of the effect of thermomechanical processing (TMP) history on the microstructure and properties of 10 and 20 volume percent 6061 Al-Al2O3 discontinuous metal matrix composites (MMCs). Materials in which cold drawing operations were included in the TMP demonstrated increased ductilities for a given strength level when compared to samples which were processed by hot extrusion only. Microstructural analysis provided clear evidence of the absence of damage to reinforcing particles during TMP and of load transfer to these particles during subsequent straining. Failure during tension testing resulted from the ductile tearing of the matrix as voids initiated by the cracking of reinforcement particles, joined together. A distinct microstructural difference related to processing history was the development of a strongly fibered particle distribution in materials experiencing low temperature drawing operations. In order to conduct an analysis of the mechanisms by which the particles are redistributed and reoriented during processing, a channel compression die was constructed which allowed processing to be simulated by compressive straining on a mechanical testing machine. This allowed careful control of the processing parameters. An analysis of the effects of processing temperature on particle redistribution and reorientation was conducted.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of thermomechanical processing parameters on the elevated temperature behavior of a 6061 aluminum -- aluminum oxides metal-matrix composite (MMC) have been studied. The same processing parameters were employed with unreinforced 6061 AL to provide a comparison. These materials were both thermomechanically processed at either 350 C or 500 C using two rolling schedules. Both schedules involved a constant strain per pass. Subsequent mechanical tests were conducted at temperatures 200 to 500 C and strain rates ranging from (6.7E-3)/s to (1.3E-1)/s. The materials processed at 500 C exhibited higher strength when compared to those processed at 350 C for deformation temperatures below 350 c. Materials stabilized by annealing after completion of rolling displayed higher ductilities when compared to the as-processed materials, especially at lower testing temperatures. The peak ductilities of the MMCS occurred at testing temperatures near the prior rolling temperatures. Solution treatment prior to rolling and additional strains during rolling in excess of 2.5 appeared to have no effect on strength or ductility.

Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.
