Book excerpt: A Complete Reference for the 21st Century Until recently, much of the communications technology in the former Eastern bloc countries was largely unknown. Due to the historically competitive nature of East/West relations, scientific groups operated independently, without the benefit of open communication on theoretical frameworks and experimental technologies. As these countries have begun to bridge the gap and work in a more cooperative environment, the need has grown for a comprehensive guide which assimilates all the information in this vast knowledge bank. Ionosphere and Applied Aspects of Radio Communication and Radar meets the demand for an updated reference on this continually evolving global technology. This book examines the changes that have occurred in the past two or three decades. It thoroughly reviews ionospheric radio propagation, over-horizon and above-horizon radars, and miniature ionospheric stations used for investigating nonregular phenomena occurring in the ionosphere. In addition, it also comprehensively discusses land-satellite and satellite-satellite communications. This volume also reviews an area that has been all but ignored in previous works: the effects of plasma irregularities on radio waves propagation through the inhomogeneous ionosphere. Here, a heavy focus is placed on the effects of these irregular phenomena. And due to the recent wireless revolution, more attention than ever has been aimed on improving the efficiency of land-satellite and satellite-satellite communication networks, which are fully addressed. Included are— Transport processes and photochemistry reactions occurring in the regular homogeneous ionosphere Nonlinear phenomena occurring in the irregular ionosphere Instabilities in the inhomogeneous disturbed ionosphere Various ambient natural and artificial sources and corresponding plasma irregularities Written by two leading scientists, this book will be an invaluable guide to anyone working in this ever-changing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Especially due to the increasing environmental problems there is a need to collect as many data as possible in the upper atmosphere. This book serves as a general multidisciplinary guide and introduction for a more effective use of the large amount of now available data from the Earth's atmosphere. It also shows the problems of the use of large amounts of time series data - for basic science as well as for environmental monitoring - and the related information systems. The book is aimed for scientists and students interested in the Earth's atmosphere which is vital for the understanding of environmental changes in the global system Earth.

It covers the Earth's UV radiative environment, experimental techniques, and current applications. it is my intention to provide the information needed to "make a first approximation" concerning the use of the ultraviolet and to provide access through the literature for a more thorough study. * Contains recent UV applications not previously available in book form such as ozone, auroral images, and ionospheric sensing * Features broad coverage of fundamentals of atmospheric geophysics with values for fluxes, cross-sections, and radiances * Covers techniques that illustrate principles of measurements with typical values * Contains numerous references to original literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of enhanced chemical reaction rates in the formation of the daytime F-region trough is examined. A simple convection model is used to estimate the maximum likely elevation of effective temperature for the ion reaction O+ + N2 yields NO(+)+ N. Under extreme conditions the effective temperature can reach 4000 k resulting in a 30-fold increase in the reaction rate. However, the resulting reduction in F-region electron density is only a factor of 4. Under more usual conditions, the reduction is less than a factor of 2. The actual density reduction factor in the daytime trough is observed to vary between 3 and 10 under normal conditions. Therefore, we conclude that under most circumstances, convection-enhanced chemistry contributes very little to the formation of the daytime trough.

Book excerpt: Tropospheric and Ionospheric Effects on Global Navigation Satellite Systems Explore atmospheric effects on radio frequency propagation in the context of Global Navigation Satellite System communication In Tropospheric and Ionospheric Effects on Global Navigation Satellite Systems, a team of distinguished researchers deliver an accessible and authoritative introduction to all scientifically relevant effects caused by the ionosphere and troposphere on GNSS RF signals. The book explores the origin of each type of propagation effect and explains it from a fundamental physical perspective. Each of the major methods used for the measurement, prediction, and mitigation of ionospheric and tropospheric effects on GNSS are discussed in detail. The authors also provide the mechanisms that drive ionization and plasma transport in the ionosphere, propagation phenomena (including scattering, absorption, and scintillations), and the predominant predictive models used to predict ionospheric propagation effects. With an emphasis on global navigation satellite systems, the book discusses the US Standard Atmosphere, a general reference model for characteristics of the unionized atmosphere. It also considers: Thorough introductions to the Global Positioning System and the principles of GNSS positioning Comprehensive explorations of tropospheric propagation and predictive models of the troposphere Practical discussions of the physics of the ionosphere, experimental observation of the ionosphere, and ionospheric propagation In-depth examinations of predictive models of the ionosphere, including group delay models for single-frequency GNSS receivers Ideal for engineers and research scientists with a professional or personal interest in geophysics, RF propagation, and GNSS and GPS applications, Tropospheric and Ionospheric Effects on Global Navigation Satellite Systems will also earn a place in the libraries of undergraduate and graduate students studying RF propagation or GNSS.
