Researchers have shown the effectiveness of self management and social skills training with students with maladaptive behaviors. This study will help educators explore an effective approach toward discipline in classroom settings. In this study the participant was a kindergarten student from an elementary school. A functional behavioral assessment was employed to determine the conditions that might interact with his problem behaviors. If such conditions could be identified, the chances of developing an effective treatment would be increased. A multiple baseline design across school settings was utilized. Baseline data were recorded with the aid of a hidden camera during classroom instruction in both settings. The treatment conditions consisted of self management and social skills training. Maladaptive behavior and academic performance were recorded, and viewed at a later time in order to calculate reliability coefficients.

Peer Support Groups/Anger Management/Conflict Resolution/Social Skills/Bullying/Teacher Student Relationships This applied dissertation was designed to reduce the disruptive verbal and physical behaviors within the regular behavior enrichment classroom during the 2003-2004 school year. From August 2002-May 2003, 18 home suspensions, 25 in-school suspensions, and 85 office referrals due to extremely disruptive verbal and physical behaviors were recorded for students enrolled in the regular education behavior enrichment classroom. The purpose of this applied dissertation was to modify the negative behaviors of students into appropriate behaviors that would allow them to productively function academically, socially, and emotionally in the regular education classroom setting. The writer developed lesson plans and strategies to reduce the verbal and physical behaviors of students within the regular behavior enrichment classroom. Strategies taught included (a) facilitation of peer support groups and instruction, (b) modeling, (c) reinforcement of conflict resolution skills, (d) self-management techniques, (e) anger management techniques, and (f) social skills lessons. This applied dissertation also has the potential to provide other educators with the strategies necessary to maintain positive behaviors in the classroom. An analysis of data revealed a decreased number of verbal and physical antisocial behaviors in students. Through this implementation, students learned how to better self-manage their behaviors and use conflict resolution skills to solve controversial issues The presence of these factors helped to motivate students, improve behavior, increase cognitive developments levels, and strengthen parent/teacher relationships.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine (a) the effects of a small group targeted intervention to promote generalized social skill use among students at-risk due to high rates of problem behavior and (b) the impact school wide systems of Positive Behavior support (PBS) has on promoting maintenance and generalization compared to traditional school structures. A multi-component social skills training package was implemented in a PBS and non-PBS school. A total of nineteen students participated in 16 weeks of social skills instruction with reinforcement and self-management strategies. Student outcomes from direct observation in the training setting, classroom, and on the playground were compared across schools. In addition, questionnaires were completed by the social skills instructors, teaching staff, classroom teachers of student participants, target students and their parents. Findings resulted in two major conclusions. First, results provide evidence that social skills training combined with behavioral strategies can be an efficient and effective intervention for addressing problem behaviors in schools Overall, data from this study indicate acquisition of social skills as a result of direct instruction. Second, student gains in acquisition and generalization of social skills was greater in the PBS school than in the non-PBS school. Students in school wide systems of support who participated in the social skills training may receive greater benefits than students in the schools without school wide systems of PBS. Differences were also noted in the perceptions of key stakeholders in the two schools. The stakeholders in the PBS school reported high interest in sustaining and maintaining the social skills training as opposed to the staff in the non-PBS school, who did not express interest in continuing the group. Small group targeted interventions may be beneficial for schools to include as one part of a continuum of support for students who do not respond to universal social skills instruction as part of a school wide system of PBS. Implications for application and future research are also discussed.

Social skills training (SST) has been effective in teaching students required skills within the context of the training site, but often these have not generalized to additional settings (DuPaul & Eckert, 1994). This study researches the effect of adding self-management to an existing training program to determine if it will increase generalization of learned behaviors. Elementary students in a mid-west school were taught social skills in a pull-out program, but those skills did not generalize for many of those students into the classroom or other settings. Five students were then selected for additional intervention by teacher and counselor nominations. Each student had a target social skill that was identified for improvement. The target skill was assessed using multiple measures such as records of student discipline, teacher ratings, student ratings, grades, teacher survey, parent survey, and student survey. Adding a self-management system for four weeks increased generalization of learned social skills to other settings such as classroom, playground, cafeteria, art, and music classes. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Moreover, the nature, quality, and quantity of those interactions have a tremendous impact on behavior, mood, and the adequacy of adjustment. Faulty interpersonal relationship patterns have reliably been associated with a wide variety of behavioral-psychological dysfunctions ranging from simple loneliness to schizophrenia. Most "traditional" analyses of interpersonal failures have viewed them as consequences or by-products of other difficulties, such as anx iety, depression, intrapsychic conflict, or thought disorder. Con sequently, remediational efforts have rarely been directed to interper sonal behavior per se. Rather, it has been expected that interpersonal relationships would improve when the source disorder was eliminated. While this model does account for some interpersonal dysfunctions (e.g., social anxiety can inhibit interpersonal behavior), it is not adequate to account for the vast majority of interpersonal difficulties. In fact, in many cases those difficulties either are independent of or underlie other dysfunctions (e.g., repeated social failure may produce depression or social anxiety).

This study investigated the effect of the ACCEPTS social skills training on the frequency of interactive behaviors between regular students and students with mild cognitive deficits in Achbal Al Sahel school. Social interactive behaviors were measured through behavior observations done before and after the training for each of the experimental and control group. 20 students were randomly selected from one grade two section of the regular school, they were assigned at random to experimental (n=10) and control (n=I0) groups. The same was applied to 20 special students from the self-contained classes included in that particular school.--An analysis of variance did not show significant differences between the two groups prior to training. Another analysis of variance showed significant differences in the post training and follow up phases, thus showing a significant treatment effect. Results were discussed and recommendations for future research were proposed.
