Book excerpt: Now a day's there is a strong motivation to explore the possibility of harnessing solar thermal energy around the world to produce electricity. Thermal energy storage (TES) is extremely important in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants as it allows the plants to have energy availability and dispatch ability using industrial technologies. Rankine cycle is used to determine the efficiency of the CSP plants, the efficiency of the cycle is increased by 40% when the present working fluid (Therminol VP-1 whose efficiency is between 10--25%) is replaced with molten salts (a combination of 60 wt% NaNO3 and 40 wt% KNO3). Molten salts are used in CSP plants as a TES material because of the following advantages: high specific heat capacity and high thermal stability. Their main drawbacks are their relative poor thermophysical properties and the instability of molten salts above 550℗ʻC. To study the effects of nanoparticles (particles between 1 and 100 nanometers in size) on the drawbacks of fluids, the fluids are doped with nanoparticles thus obtaining the salt-based nanofluids. The present study experimentally determines the effect of nanoparticles (silicon and titanium dioxide) on the decomposition temperature of molten salts at elevated temperatures. Specific heat capacity is measured by using a differential scanning calorimeter (Perkin Elmer DSC 7), the experiment work has been carried out at different temperature range (400℗ʻC to 575℗ʻC). The size distribution of nanoparticle clusters present in the salt at each concentration was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out to study the mass loss and activation energy of the molten salt at elevated temperatures with varying mass concentrations of nanoparticles (1%, 5% and 9%).

Book excerpt: Due to their desirable thermophysical properties, nitrate molten salts are the main reason for studying the high-temperature storage medium in concentrated solar power plants. Low freezing point temperatures allow for safe operation of the power plant and for thermal energy storage fluids to be in a liquid state over an extended temperature range. Using portions of the obtained thermal energy to maintain the molten salt in its liquid state reduces the overall thermal efficiency of the power plant. Previous studies reveal that the addition of nanoparticles to the 60% NaNO3-40% KNO3 composition of molten salt decreases its freezing point temperature. The main objective of this study is to see how the freezing point temperatures of varying compositions of nitrate molten salts (30% NaNO3-70% KNO3|40% NaNO3-60% KNO3| 50% NaNO3-50% KNO3| 60% NaNO3-40% KNO3|70% NaNO3-30% KNO3) are effected when titanium dioxide nanoparticles of anatase phase of different volume fractions are added to it. In this study, nitrate molten salts are prepared and then tested using the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The DSC tests allow for obtaining the thermal properties such as freezing point temperatures, specific heat capacities, and latent heat of fusion. Observations using the SEM provide an opportunity to quantify the morphological properties like size, the microstructure, and the dispersion of the nanoparticles in the molten salt.

Book excerpt: The surface defect of nano-TiO2 powder prepared by a solvothermal method was investigated by using photocatalytic decomposition of ethylene. The result shows that the photoactivity increases with increasing in the crystallite size. As a result of larger crystallite size having more surface defects. The crystalline structures and morphologies of the powder have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The result shows that the different preparation conditions such as heating time and heating temperature have great influences on the properties of nano-TiO2 powders. The growth rate of titania particles follow Arrhenius's law. Moreover, different heating time had different effects on the crystallite size depending on heating temperature. The higher the heating temperature, the greater the effect of heating time on the crystallite size.

Book excerpt: With increasing energy costs, government regulations, and an expanding population, alternative low-cost methods for the treatment of waste air and water have shown renewed interest. The utilization of solar energy to promote catalytic reactions, including photodegradation of pollutants, is an attractive and well-established field of research. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are the most widely employed catalyst material in photocatalytic studies. Owing to its high surface area and electronic structure, the anatase phase of TiO 2 is an excellent photocatalyst. However, a detailed understanding of the physical, chemical, and electronic properties of TiO 2 that influence the photocatalytic reaction rate does not exist. One goal of this work is the determination of how the degradation rate over TiO 2 nanoparticle is influenced by the particle size. To meet this goal, detailed analysis of the particles was carried out using standard catalytic techniques combined with infrared spectroscopy to probe the decomposition of an organic probe molecule, formic acid. It was shown using infrared spectroscopy that the size of the particle does influence the rate of photodegradation. However for particles as small as five nanometers, the increased rate could be described by accounting for the increased surface area of the particles. Novel synthesis conditions for the synthesis of high purity particles is required to develop a better understanding of how the size can influence the particle's catalytic properties. Combustion synthesis serves as an attractive method for the synthesis of high purity TiO 2 nanoparticles. The high temperatures present in a combustion flame promotes the decomposition of organometallic precursors and subsequent synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles. Numerous synthesis conditions can influence the product powder. This research investigated some of these conditions for the synthesis of TiO 2 nanoparticles. Additionally the thermal properties of TiO 2 nanoparticles was investigated. It is known that the more active phase for photocatalysis, anatase, is metastable at extremely small particle sizes (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The magnitude of the thermal expansion of silica brick and its inability to withstand rapid temperature changes gives rise to problems of considerable importance in the manufacture of silica brick. In firing the silica brick, mineralogical changes occur in the quartzite from which the brick is made, in which minerals of lower specific gravity are formed. This results in a permanent expansion of the brick. These mineralogical changes have been thoroughly studied and considerable information is known on the different forms of silica produced at the higher temperatures. If the conditions of firing are such that these changes have progressed but little during the initial firing of the brick it is quite certain that if the brick are used in services where they are subjected to a high temperature, further permanent expansion will occur. This expansion results, generally, in buckling and racking of the silica brick walls. The changes causing this expansion are due to the quartz changing over into tridymite and cristobalite and due to the unconverted quartz changing from alpha to beta quartz. From the thermal expansion data for the different forms of silica, it is seen that tridymite has the most desirable thermal expansions characteristics for silica refractories, and for this reason it is desired to convert as much of the silica possible to the tridymite form in the initial firing of the silica brick"--Introduction, leaves 1-3.

Book excerpt: The book deals with novel aspects and perspectives in metal oxide and hybrid material fabrication. The contributions are mainly focused on the search for a new group of advanced materials with designed physicochemical properties, especially an expanded porous structure and defined surface activity. The proposed technological procedures result in an enhanced activity of the synthesized hybrid materials, which is of great importance when considering their potential fields of application. The use of such materials in different technological disciplines, including aspects associated with environmental protection, allows for the verification of the proposed synthesis method. Thus, it can be stated that those aspects are of interdisciplinary character and may be located at the interface of three scientific disciplines—chemistry, materials science, and engineering—as well as environmental protection. Furthermore, the presented scientific scope is in some way an answer to the continuous demand for such types of materials and opens new perspectives for their practical use
