Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Effect of Probe Tip Size on Transient Otoacoustic Emissions submitted by MUI, Yin-Chau for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2004 The measurement of transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), produced in the cochlea by a transient click and recorded in the external ear canal, depends on a number of factors. The first and most important one is the probe fit which is essential for maximizing the detection of the emissions and on the other hand, for minimizing the interference of ambient noise level. To achieve a good probe fit, an appropriate size of the probe tip has to be selected for each individual ear. The effect of a change of probe tip size on the TEOAEs was investigated in a group of 40 Chinese adults (mean age = 30.1, SD = 6.6) with normal hearing and middle ear functioning. Three different sizes of probe tip (optimal-size, one size bigger, one size smaller) were used to record TEOAEs from either ear of each subject. A mixed between-subjects repeated-measures model was used to evaluate the differences recorded by non-linear protocol paradigms from the three probe tip sizes across clinical variables of vii interest (overall correlation, overall signal-to-noise ratio, correlation and signal-to-noise ratio at 1 kHz and 4 kHz bands). The results showed that the means of overall correlation and signal-to-noise ratio, and those at 1 kHz and 4 kHz bands were significantly reduced with smaller-size probe tip.
