Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect of Natural Aided Language Stimulation (NALS) on requesting objects and actions in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). NALS used picture symbols that were highlighted (pointed out) while a message was spoken (naming choices available). Three children, diagnosed with ASD, who attended a preschool classroom for children with disabilities in an urban school district and who lacked the speech and language skills to make an appropriate and understandable request, participated. Background data were gathered through tape-recorded interviews with participants' parents and teacher to gain information on communication skills and picture language boards were made. A training video was made for the teacher to learn the NALS procedure and use of prompts to elicit responses and to recognize an appropriate response during requesting routines. A multiple baseline design across participants was used to analyze the effects of NALS intervention. The independent variable was the use of NALS during a requesting routine within the classroom. The dependent variable was the change in communication behavior on the part of the participants. Four routines were recorded each day. A data point represented two days or eight responses. Baseline data were recorded without the use of NALS and, after a clear trend was established, intervention data were gathered with NALS in place. Follow-up data were gathered in the same way as intervention data to show maintenance in the procedure as well as in the children's responses. Spontaneous communication was also recorded during the study. Results showed that the NALS intervention was effective for all participants. Summary tables and figures illustrated that the children's appropriate responses increased over the course of the study and that the participants responded primarily by pointing to the pictures on the language boards or pointing to and verbalizing the choices. Data also showed a decrease in the number of prompts needed to elicit an appropriate response. Social validity data gathered through "end of the study" questionnaire revealed that the parents and the teacher believed that the NALS intervention was an effective strategy in aiding the participants in appropriately and clearly communicating a request.

There are a variety of intervention approaches available that facilitate improvements in communication. This investigation explored the effects of (Faded) Aided Language Stimulation (ALS), an intervention approach that can address both augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and verbal vocabulary needs for those individuals. The research purpose of this experiment was to implement (Faded) ALS as a faded prompt to examine the effects on expressive vocabulary productions for minimally verbal children with ASD. This investigation was an ABCD single-subject design evaluated across a single participant, which evaluated the impact of this intervention approach on expressive vocabulary as measured through total number and the varied number of both AAC and verbal vocabulary productions. Current literature demonstrates that ALS has had secondary positive effects on verbal productions. This study aimed to specfically examine the direct impacts on verbal productions, to take the next logical step to expand upon research in the speech-language pathology field. This investigation aims to build on the currently available literature to determine how fading ALS would effect expressive vocabulary production. This experiment included a single participant. Results revealed that this participant exhibited a significant increase and maintenance in both the varied and total number of AAC and verbally-produced vocabulary following the intervention. Faded aided language stimulation appeared to be linked with an increase and maintenance of expressive vocabulary for a minimally-verbal child with ASD.

Book excerpt: Comprehension of spoken language skills are often taken for granted in research concerning early childhood language acquisition in typically developing children. While the onset of early word comprehension arguably precedes word production, traditional research has focused on language production rather than comprehension. A similar trend of focussing on expression is evident in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Traditionally, the role of AAC systems for individuals with little or no functional speech (LNFS) has been as an output mode for expressing messages. While this is an essential role and final outcome of AAC intervention strategies, the role of listeners is equally important. The comprehension of spoken language provides an essential foundation upon which language production competence can be built. AAC users' ability to comprehend spoken language is varied from age equivalent comprehension of spoken language to minimal comprehension. Some AAC users comprehend spoken language and therefore come to the AAC acquisition task with an established knowledge of spoken language. Others who experience difficulty comprehending spoken language require AAC as both input (receptive) and output (expressive) mode. Graphic symbols play a role in facilitating comprehension of messages either through facilitating the comprehension of the spoken language or the AAC symbols. The use of augmented input strategies like aided language stimulation is one type of instructional technique used in teaching graphic symbols to AAC users. Aided language stimulation refers to a technique in which a facilitator or communication partner combines the use of AAC with natural speech through simultaneously pointing to graphic symbols and speaking. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the impact of a three week long aided language stimulation program on the receptive language skills of children with LNFS. Four children participated in this multiple probe study. The aided language stimulation programme comprised three activities viz. arts and crafts, food preparation and story time activity. Each activity was repeated over duration of five subsequent sessions. Eight target vocabulary items were taught within each activity. The acquisition of all 24 target items were probed throughout the duration of the three week intervention period. The results indicated that all the participants acquired the target receptive vocabulary items. There were, however, variations in terms of the rate of acquisition. There was no statistically significant improvement in the general receptive language abilities of the participants.
