Book excerpt: How to build bounce-back kids, families, schools, and communities is the theme of Resiliency In Action: Practical Ideas for Overcoming Risks and Building Strengths in Youth, Families, and Communities. It is edited by internationally recognized resiliency expert, trainer, and consultant Nan Henderson, M.S.W., whose publications are used in more than 25 countries. The book is a research-based, practical guide for educators, counselors, parents, community organizers, and mentors and is filled with the latest strategies for helping children, families, schools, and communities bounce back from risk, stress, trauma, and adversity.More than two dozen experts in the fields of child, family, organizational, and community resiliency contributed to the book, which challenges a widely accepted myth about people especially young people, who experience risks, stress, trauma, and adversity in their lives, according to Henderson. Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of these individuals, over time, do bounce back and do well. There is a growing body of scientific research from several fields that documents this fact and yields important information as to what can be done every day to facilitate this process of overcoming. This book is really three books in one: it contains the most recent research, hands-on and practical strategies, and stories of resilient individuals and best practices. The book includes 60 chapters grouped in seven sections: The Foundations of Resiliency, Resiliency and Schools, Resiliency and Communities, Resiliency Connections (Mentoring, Support, and Counseling), Resiliency and Youth Development, Resiliency and Families, and Resiliency and the Brain.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to compare the effect elementary music and visual arts lessons had on third through sixth grade standardized mathematics test scores. Inferential statistics were used to compare the differences between test scores of students who took in-school, elementary, music instruction during the same semester state standardized mathematics tests were administered and those who took in-school, elementary visual arts instruction during the same semester standardized mathematics tests were administered. The students attended seven elementary schools in the same North Alabama school district. The research questions were: (a) Does participation in elementary school music lessons have a greater positive effect on the proportion of third through sixth grade students who score Level III and Level IV on the ARMT mathematics test compared to third through sixth grade students participating in elementary school visual arts lessons? and (b) Does participation in elementary school music lessons have a greater positive effect on the mean SAT-10 mathematics test scores of third through sixth grade students compared to third through sixth grade students participating in elementary school visual arts lessons? There results indicated there was not a statistically significant difference in the analysis of the ARMT scores; however, the analysis did reveal that on average a greater proportion of students scored higher on the mathematics section of the ARMT when taking school music lessons compared to visual arts lessons. The analysis results of the SAT-10 scores did yield a statistically significant difference.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine if music and academic achievement are connected to form a more cohesive unit of learning. This project attempts to show how participation in a music program in school will not only help children explore new academic experiences but will also help in their academic achievment through improvement in test scores in mathematics and languages.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between student participation in instrumental music class and academic achievement, specifically in low socioeconomic status (SES) students. The hypothesis was that students who participate in an instrumental music program will display increased levels of achievement, and that this relationship will be more pronounced among students who receive free and reduced lunches. Participants in this study were 320 students in grades 5 and 6 from an intermediate school in a rural south central Kansas school district. Students ranged in age from 10-12 years. A total of 172 fifth grade students and 148 sixth grade students participated. The Two-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was the main analytical method employed in this study. Separate ANOVAs were conducted for each of the two dependent measures, reading and mathematics, subscales of the Kansas State Assessment, for both grade levels with music status and lunch status as factors. Some of the findings from this study are consistent with previous research. Results show were no significant interactions found between instrumental music status and lunch status in any of the four ANOVAs. A statistically significant relationship was found between sixth grade instrumental music participation and reading scores, as well as sixth grade instrumental music participation and math scores. These results suggest that duration (i.e., months of instruction) in instrumental music class may be important to increases in academic achievement. Also consistent with previous research, fifth grade results showed a statistically significant relationship between lunch status and reading scores as well as lunch status and mathematics scores; free and reduced lunch students scored significantly lower than their peers.

The quantitative study was conducted in a large suburban school district in Southeast Georgia. This study investigated the impact of music on student achievement when music is incorporated with the core academic subject of mathematics at the elementary level. This goal was accomplished by using a pretest-posttest control group design with a population of 51 third grade students and 51 fifth grade students through a series of analysis of covariance tests (ANCOVA). The t-test results showed statistically significant difference when comparing the experimental and control groups: t (26) = 6.11, p [greater than].000, t (23) = 3.73, p [greater than].001, t (26) = 6.01,p [greater than].000, t ((23) = 7.30,p [greater than].000. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used with the data to answer Research Question 2. Both groups showed significant difference. White students in both the control and experimental group outperformed black students in the experimental and control groups, F (7, 94) = 5.47, p [greater than].000. In answer to Research Question 3, when comparing the high socioeconomic group to the low socioeconomic group we find that many of the low socioeconomic groups scored higher than the high socioeconomic status groups F(7,94) = 6.03, p [greater than] .000 . It is recommended that future studies incorporate a power analysis to ensure sufficient sample size. The findings benefit teachers and students by presenting data supporting how the use of baroque and classical music playing along with music integration into the math curriculum is an important role in increasing student achievement in mathematics.
