The current study used data gathered from principals to examine the relationships between a principal's transformational and transactional leadership practices and a teacher's autonomous and controlled motivations. In addition, the relationship between a principal's leadership practices and a teacher's level of job satisfaction was examined. Additional analyses were conducted to examine the potential moderating effect of teacher motivation on the relationship between principal leadership style and teacher job satisfaction. Implications for principal training programs, professional development, and future directions for research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The study investigated the relationship between the five leadership practices; Challenge the Process, Enable other to Act, Encourage the Heart, Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and 71 Elementary and Secondary Female teachers job motivation in 10 schools (5 private and 5 public) in Lebanon. The instruments used were the Leadership Practices Inventory (ILP) and Teacher Motivation Diagnostic Questionnaire (TMDQ). Correlation and descriptive analysis (one-way ANOVA) were used to analyze data. The results revealed that there is a significant correlation between the leadership practices and the level of teacher motivation. The Results showed that the better the leadership practices practiced by the leader, the more the teachers scored on the levels of motivation. It was also found that there is a significant correlation between the leaders gender and the level of teacher motivation. The results also indicated that there is a significant and positive correlation between the cycle where the teacher teaches and the level of motivation. Moreover, the results indicated that no significant difference existed between the demographic variables (age and level of education) and teacher motivation while they indicated that female teachers working in private schools are more motivated that those working in public schools. It was recommended that the principals should follow the five leadership practices. Principals should also integrate teachers demographic properties with continuous assessment and evaluation of teachers feelings to stay updated with the relationship between their teachers job motivation and those demographic properties.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the appropriate leadership styles among school principles and its effects on teachers job satisfaction and motivation. In order to answer the research questions, the study adopted quantitative research methodology. Two questionnaires were used in order to gather the data on the leadership styles of school principals and teachers job satisfaction. The two questionnaires used were "Leadership Practice Inventory" developed by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner in the early 1980s, and "Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction, and Teacher Retention for Teachers" developed by Karen S. Myers Giacometti in November 8, 2005. The participants of this study were 200 teachers in 10 schools located in the Metn area. The findings significantly showed that teachers preferred working with a leader that motivated, encouraged, and was always there for them. Thus, the teachers preferred a leader with a mixture of transformational and transactional leadership style rather than the laissez faire one. Teachers perceived leaders with positive practices to have better effects on teachers motivation level and job satisfaction. As for the different demographic variables, statistics showed that each of the university degree, gender, and salary played a separate role depending on the given conditions. This study concluded with several recommendations given to school principals in order to improve the educational system, and their relationship with their teachers and staff members. Specifically, these recommendations contributed to the improvement and understanding of leadership styles in the Lebanese educational context.
