Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educative Process The following account of the Educative Process is intended to present a systematic and comprehensive view of the task that is to be accomplished by the school. It covers the field commonly included under the terms, "General Method," "Method of the Recitation," "Theory and Practice," etc.; but it deals with principles rather than with the details of device and "method." The writer is convinced that clear and definite notions of the functions of education and of the laws which govern the educative process will do much toward eliminating the waste of time and energy that is involved in the work of the school. It is not to be expected that the young teacher, even though he be equipped with the best of theory, will prosecute his work with maximal success from the very start. Skill in teaching, like skill in any other art, can come only through persistent practice, coupled with serious study and strenuous self-discipline. But self-discipline reaches up to ideals for control and guidance; and not the least important element in the formation of effective ideals is substantial theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Education During the later decades of the nineteenth century philosophy and psychology dominated the theory of education. From the principles of these two fields methods were deduced for which the claim was made that they produced the best results in instructional practice. During the twentieth century, however, experimental science has been the dominant method. Without regard for the philosophical point of view, specific methods of teaching, of supervision, and of administration have been studied in localized situations to discover the better practice. During these two latter decades a very considerable body of technique has been collected and to this constant accretions are being made. The force of the scientific impulse is, fortunately, not yet expended and it is confidently expected to continue indefinitely with increasing value. But since the tendency of science is to produce a body of technique, particle by particle, as investigators study small individual and relatively isolated problems, central attitudes and principles are temporarily ignored. The result of this is that the orientation of the whole mass of technique is lost sight of and those who practice do so without clear ultimate purposes in mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Process, Vol. 6 IT is not the search after nor discovery of new ideas that makes an original man, so much as his ability to reclothe the old with some newness of appearance or meaning out of his own individuality. This book attempts to organize a new doctrine of education out of an old theory of thought. The peculiar method of treatment is original but the fundamental principle creating and organizing the educational process is the central truth of all phi 1080pby. The trichotomy running through this text is largely a necessary form of thought but it is at the same time a convenient mode of discussion. Each threefold division is organically related to every other in such a manner as to form a systematic whole. The sub-topics throughout the volume are suggestive rather than exhaustive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child Under Eight The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions Of the best theory and practice in English education of today. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches Of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and Of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which Of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. NO artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. Our interest in subject-matter is concerned, not simply with the selection of matter that is adapted to the age and development of the child mind from the standpoint of dilfi culty, but just as vitally with the content of the stories. What should guide us in the selection of subject-matter? This is a question that naturally arises. The child of six is concerned chiefly with discovering the world about him, particularly those things that concern him directly. He is full of life and activity, and is therefore drawn to those things that have to do with life and activity. His power of observation is not keen. He sees clearly only what is striking. Bright colors, lively action, unusualstories, verse with quick movement, are the things that appeal to his senses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Education Method and Other Papers on Education The publication, in a collected form, of the papers included in this volume may not be without value at the present critical juncture of educational affairs when so many serious attempts are being made to bring our school system into harmony with the times and'to improve the methods of teaching. The earlier articles are didactic: in these I have sought to give reasons for the introduction of scientific method into all schools. The later articles are con structive: they contain the suggestions which, from time to time, I have ventured to make for the improve ment of the methods of teaching elementary physical science. Whilst the former may be of interest to the general reader, the latter will appeal more to the specialist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Project Method of Teaching This book is devoted mainly to a critical discussion of the project method of teaching. The term project has only recently made its appearance in educational terminology, but the idea back of the project is not new. It is quite probable that skillful teachers have always used the essential features of the project method. A survey of modern teaching methods in engineering, law, medicine, agriculture, as well as in the prescribed subjects of the school curriculum, shows that much effort is being expended to bridge the chasm between school tasks and activities outside the school. In other words, the project idea, as defined by the author, is attempted to some extent in all these fields. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Modern Times More striking characteristics of the book will probably be found in the emphasis laid upon educational institu tions and practices, rather than upon theoretical develop ment; and in the larger place given to American educa tion. The account of each educational movement has included at least an attempt to trace its in uence upon the content, method, and organization Of education in this country, while three chapters have been devoted exclusively to the rise of our educational system. For this somewhat special point of View, I trust that no apology is needed, as the book is intended primarily for use in the United States, and will be of service to our teachers largely as it succeeds in focusing the educational progress of this country. It will be quite possible, however, for those readers in England and other coun tries, who have been so hospitable in their reception of my former works, to neglect or curtail these parts of the book, and still have a body of material sufficient to represent satisfactorily the history of education during the past two centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book in the Principles of Education In the following pages I have endeavored to present in a systematic way the outlines of a theory of education from the point of view of evolution. The evolutionary conception has been applied to educational theory more or less consistently by all writers on the subject since the time of Froebel. The development of more and more scientific knowledge in regard to the history of life, of mind, and of society has, however, made possible constant reconstruction of the general principles, in terms of which the process of evolution through education is to be conceived. I have tried to draw into a unified scheme what seem to me the essential features of current thought on this subject to-day. To accomplish this result in anything like an adequate manner, and at the same time make those practical applications of principles which a book on the "Principles of Education" may be expected to offer, it has been necessary to give to certain fundamental conceptions a very condensed and, I fear, somewhat abstract treatment. Such is especially the case in the chapter on "Conscious Learning," which, had space been clearly available, I should gladly have expanded by the addition of more illustration. In the chapter on "Readjustment, its Meaning, Conditions, and Methods," I have given the essential features of my theory of evolution. To the schoolman interested primarily in practice this may seem like a somewhat formidable introduction to so practical a subject as the Principles of Education should be.
