But economic history is an exceedingly difficult discipline. The historian often gets lost in producing an inventory of static facts or else is committed to confirm a conceptual and interpretational framework copied from western history. The present monograph, approved for the Ph.D. degree of the University of London, is among the pioneering studies which have helped determine the scope, nature, methods and ideals for economic history. It delineates the details of economic life in a developmental manner taking due notice of the complex of terms and concepts in the sastric texts. In selecting the early medieval period as its subject of study the present work has inspired many other studies, and, by illuminating a much neglected period, has shed light alike on the ancient and medieval periods. It places the period in the total span of Indian history and hence has been the model for students of economic history and is recognised by historians in general as one of the most significant contributions on the socio-economic history of India.

Book excerpt: This thesis is a study of the economic history of Gupta India as far as it can be re-constructed from the available sources. By utilizing material not hitherto studied in this connection we believe that we have thrown fresh light on several aspects of the subject. The first chapter deals with previous work on the subject, and the sources used. In Chapter II we study the land system. We have made a specially detailed study of the surviving inscriptions relating to the transfer of land, and in several respects have tried to throw new light on the subject. In our study of the units of measurement used we have tried to establish equivalences by thorough examination of the evidence, and for the first time we have also noticed the great demand for land in the Gupta period. Our third chapter deals with the revenue system; in this we have carefully studied the terms used in our sources, and attempted to explain several on which there is difference of opinion among scholars. The fourth chapter, dealing with agriculture and stockbreeding, throws some new light on the conditions of the time, by reference to the works of Varaahamihira and Amara, which have not hitherto been used for this purpose. Our chapter on Industry - the fifth - studies the subject both in the light of the written sources and of archaeology. The sixth chapter on trade and commerce contains sections on both internal and external trade; in the latter section contemporary Western and Chinese sources have been utilized, and throw some new light on India's maritime trade. In our study of labour conditions, Chapter VII, we have collated the evidence of inscriptions and legal texts on slavery, forced labour and hired labour. Chapter VIII deals with corporate economic life; we compare references to this in our own period with those in earlier sources, and conclude that guild organization greatly developed under the Guptas. Our ninth and final chapter deals with the currency system; here we attempt a study of Gupta coinage from the economic point of view, and adduce certain new conclusions from our tests of the purity of Gupta gold coins; we also consider moneylending in the period, and conclude that it greatly increased as compared with earlier times. Our work contains a three appendices; the first is a summary of Varahamihira's forecasts relating to economic life, which we believe are of some significance in assessing the economic situation of the time; the second is a synoptic table of the contents of the documents relating to land-sale of our period; and the third appendix gives the results of our specific gravity tests of Gupta coins.

Its end is marked by Vasco da Gama's voyage round the Cape of Good Hope in 1498 and the establishment of the Mughal empire (1526). The renewed Islamic advance into north India, from roughly 1000 A.D. onward, leading to the rise of the Delhi Sultanate (1206), is the beginning of the medieval period in political and cultural terms.

Beginning with a mysterious culture along the Indus River and in farming communities in the southern lands of India, the history of India is punctuated by constant integration with migrating peoples and with the diverse cultures that surround the country. Placed in the center of Asia, history in India is a crossroads of cultures from China to Europe, as well as the most significant Asian connection with the cultures of Africa. The Historical Dictionary of Ancient India provides information ranging from the earliest Paleolithic cultures in the Indian subcontinent to 1000 CE. The ancient history of this country is related in this book through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on rulers, bureaucrats, ancient societies, religion, gods, and philosophical ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting diverse types of market places and merchants, this book situates the commercial scenario of early India (up to c. ad 1300) in the overall agrarian material milieu of the subcontinent. The book questions the stereotypical narrative of early Indian trade as exchanges in small quantity, exotic, portable luxury items and strongly argues for the significance of trade in relatively inexpensive bulk commodities – including agrarian/floral products – at local and regional levels and also in long distance trade. That staple items had salience in the sea-borne trade of early India figures prominently in this book which points out that commercial exchanges touched the everyday life of a variety of people. A major feature of this work is the conspicuous thrust on and attention to the sea-borne commerce in the subcontinent. The history of Indic seafaring in the Indian Ocean finds a prominent place in this book pointing out the braided histories of overland and maritime networks in the subcontinent. In addition to three specific chapters on the maritime profile of early Bengal, the third edition of Trade and Traders in Early Indian Society offers two new chapters (14 and 15) on the commercial scenario of Gujarat, dealing respectively with an organization of merchants during the early sixth century ad and with the long-term linkages between money-circulation and overseas trade in Gujarat c. ad 500-1500). A new preface to the Third Edition discusses the emerging historiographical issues in the history of trade in early India. Rich in the interrogation of a wide variety of primary sources, the book analyses the changing perspectives on early Indian trade by taking into account the current literature on the subject.

Book excerpt: In this volume, André Wink analyzes the beginning of the process of momentous and long-term change that came with the Islamization of the regions that the Arabs called al-Hind—India and large parts of its Indianized hinterland. In the seventh to eleventh centuries, the expansion of Islam had a largely commercial impact on al-Hind. In the peripheral states of the Indian subcontinent, fluid resources, intensive raiding and trading activity, as well as social and political fluidity and openness produced a dynamic impetus that was absent in the densely settled agricultural heartland. Shifts of power occurred, in combination with massive transfers of wealth across multiple centers along the periphery of al-Hind. These multiple centers mediated between the world of mobile wealth on the Islamic-Sino-Tibetan frontier (which extended into Southeast Asia) and the world of sedentary agriculture, epitomized by brahmanical temple Hinduism in and around Kanauj in the heartland. The growth and development of a world economy in and around the Indian Ocean—with India at its center and the Middle East and China as its two dynamic poles—was effected by continued economic, social, and cultural integration into ever wider and more complex patterns under the aegis of Islam. Please note that Early medieval India and the expansion of Islam 7th-11th centuries was previously published by Brill in hardback (ISBN 90 04 09249 8, still available).

Book excerpt: Illustrations: 1 Map Description: The present book based on the intensive study of epigraphic records, seeks to present a comprehensive analysis of the Land in Northern India during the period c. AD 400-700. It brings together scattered pieces of information on agrarian system and makes an in-depth study of the practice of making donations of land and villages to brahmanas and religious establishments-a practice which became fairly widespread in different parts of India from the Gupta period onwards. Apart from examining the implications of this practice the work studies in detail such important problems as landownership patterns, revenue system and methods of surplus extraction and administration of agrarian resources.
