Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Eclectic Physicians of Cincinnati and Covington, 1853 As to the former fact we would remark that no member of the present Faculty or present Board of Trustees was concerned in their introduction into the Institute, excepting Dr. Wilson who concurred in their removal. They were appointed because there was no competition for the places and the Board was compelled to accept a sufficient number to make out a Faculty. Dr. Jones was chosen as a substitute for Dr. Jordan who would not accept. Both of these gentlemen retained their places until their presence was found to be deeply injurious to the Institute, in the unanimous opinion of their colleagues. As to the numerous meeting of Eclectic physicians, the committee can not discover its existence. The only general meeting of which we have any knowledge was that publicly called and held at the E. M. Insti tute, by which the present committee were appointed. In the private meeting at Dr. Jones' apartments, there were three or four known as physicians in Eclectic practice, one of whom was present at our public meeting, and we have never heard that any of these individuals approved of Dr. Jones' scurrilous language against the Faculty, on the contrary, we have been informed by Dr. Kyle that the scurrilous expressions of the pamphlet were inserted after the meeting by Dr. Jones himself. Endeavored to be as plain and as explicit as possible. Iam opposed to too much prolixity in any medical work intended for the use of private individuals; consequently, I have been as brief as the nature of the case would admit. All technicalities have been carefully avoided, making the work perfectly plain to an ordinary scholar. Such diseases as require the immediate attendance of the Physician, I have not treated upon', further than to point out the symptoms, fearing that persons may delay calling in a Physician until it be too late. Like all writers on the practice of medicine, I have only been able to lay down general plans of treatment; but, I assure the reader, with that candor which I hope will ever characterize my life, that general or undeviating plans will not always answer the purpose intended. The disease Should be treated agreeably to the symptoms manifested, and should the complaint vary from its ordinary course, the treatment should vary also. I know there are Physicians in our County, of age and experience, who contend for an universal course of treatment, to be pursued in all patients laboring under the same disease; but I care not for the opin ions of any Physician, however aged he may be, when the)r are' so destitute of reason. Men often grow gray in igno rance and folly, and the Physician should be judged by his success in practice, and not by his age. I hope, however. Pathology in our school has been entirely overshadowed by our materia medics. If this continues our school must accept the term empiric, for medicine administered for diseases of which we know not of, is a lottery in its results which is alike dangerous to the sufferer and most unsatisfactory to the physician. Against my Views comes the therapeutist, who says, I want to cure my patients. I know what I have done, and what I can do. But watch the course of such thinkers. With the cases they meet mostly, simple plans succeed; but once in a while presents itself a case out of the ordinary, then what is the result '9' Hav ing no foundation to guide them they administer this remedy, that remedy, and to some medical journal comes, an anomalous case a case in practice. Etc. Etc. Such is the proving of my views. From my own experience in the great Hospitals, and constant association with the great diagnosticians, I as firmly believe that a man cannot be a true physician without pathology as I do that a man cannot be an artist who is color-blind; and it is about as hard to convince the one as it is the other of the want of success. I appeal more especially to the young men of the school, for it is through them that it will be maintained and car ried on, and when we once allow ourselves to drop into a routine the chances are that our routine becomes part of us, and is ever with us; and I might, apropos, quote Crockett, in First be sure you're right, then go ahead.
