Book excerpt: Dear Soon-to-be Ex-smoker, What if I told you that quitting smoking cigarettes or vapes could be as easy as snapping your fingers? A bold statement, but please bear with me. After 25 years of heavy smoking, I stumbled upon a path that led me to quit smoking easily, comfortably and permanently. Dumbfounded to my discovery, I was expecting nasty nicotine withdrawal cravings after smoking my last and final cigarette. Incredibly, there was none. Days would go by and I still had no need or desire to smoke. Even being around smokers had no effect on me. Astonishingly, I was immune to any influences that could lead me back to my old smoking habits. Ex-smokers confused me and most other quit-smoking books scared me During many years as a heavy smoker, I could not understand how some people could quit like it's nothing and how others like me were beyond hope. I would question ex-smokers and I would read all the books I could find on the subject. Sadly, most ex-smokers couldn't seem to articulate properly how they did it. Even worse, most books on quitting tried to scare me into quitting. It all seemed futile. I tried to quit so many times during my 25 years of smoking that I could not put a number to it. Years later, out of ideas and at my wit's end, I somehow started grasping what was actually going on beneath the surface. The magic was in a deep understanding of the realities surrounding smoking Like most smokers who try to quit, I would think it was just a matter of abstaining from smoking until the will to smoke left. This did not work at all. It was like trying to hold your breath with the hopes that you wouldn't need to breathe anymore. The truth is that real freedom from smoking only comes with a deep understanding of the grip smoking has on us. I explain this process to you using simple and clear terms and concepts. I also repetitively emphasize many of the concepts to ensure that there is no doubt about the information provided. Anyone can use my method, no matter who you are Whether you're 18 or 80 years old, you can use my method to quit easily, without fuss and permanently. Whether you smoke one cigarette a week or one hundred a day, my method will work for you. My method does not involve willpower, discomfort, hypnosis, props, pills or potions. It involves common sense and the expulsion of many myths when it comes to smoking. I show you how to completely disarm the hold smoking has over you. With smoking having no more place to hang on to, walking away is a natural result. LOOK! There are incredible benefits to being free of smoking The thought of quitting smoking can be daunting for most people, but quitting can be extremely rewarding to your life. Here are some of the greatest benefits to look forward to: Your body starts healing the moment you quit and an extended lifespan is waiting for you. Fear of the health-related consequences of smoking vanishes as your body heals. You become more attractive, healthier, and have heaps of extra energy. Sense of taste and smell returns and the simple pleasures of life like eating and drinking become much more enjoyable. Quitting can bring a remarkably positive outlook on life. For most it is a great, lasting victory in life. You eliminate an expense you'll never have again. You could save thousands, even hundreds of thousands. Life simply becomes more enjoyable and fulfilling in every facet. Ready to make big improvements in your life? Join me on the easy and permanent path to freedom from smoking. The secret to freedom from nicotine is waiting for you to be discovered. Your Friend, Ex-smoker and Author Walter Powrie

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'M TOO STRESSED TO STOP. I'LL GAIN WEIGHT IF I QUIT. I'VE TRIED AND FAILED TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT. Why are you still smoking, even though you want to quit? Based on twenty years of research and hands-on work with countless smokers in his clinics at Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Daniel F. Seidman understands that people smoke -- and quit -- for different reasons and what works for one smoker might not work for another. • Are you a Situational Smoker? Monitoring your reactions in different situations is a step toward permanently losing interest in cigarettes. • Are you a Worried-about-Weight Smoker? Properly using treatments like Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can help you quit and get healthy in all aspects of your life. • Are you an Emotion-Triggered Smoker? Scheduling your smoking breaks and sticking to a rigid "smoking schedule" helps break the link between stressful situations and craving cigarettes. In a comprehensive, 30-day program, Dr. Seidman explains how to retrain your brain, take advantage of all the tools at your disposal, and end the month smoke-free and feeling stronger than ever!

Book excerpt: Why haven't you quit smoking yet? Seriously. Why haven't you? That's what I asked myself. It's a simple question, yet I had no answer, other than... quitting is hard and it sucks. I had all kinds of excuses, and even though I hated being addicted to cigarettes, the truth is, I liked smoking. A lot! But I wanted to stop smoking. I knew all the reasons why I should quit, yet each attempt to stop ended in failure. Sure, at times I could sort of quit for a few weeks, but eventually I had another smoke hanging from my lips. Even when my health began failing and I needed to quit, I still couldn't do it. It wasn't until I became really honest with myself and spent some time examining my past failures, that I finally discovered a path that led me to freedom from smoking addiction, permanently. If you're tired of smoking and just can't seem to kick that addiction, then I invite you to join me on my journey.

Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Surgeon General's report returns to the topic of the health effects of involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke. The last comprehensive review of this evidence by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) was in the 1986 Surgeon General's report, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Smoking, published 20 years ago this year. This new report updates the evidence of the harmful effects of involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke. This large body of research findings is captured in an accompanying dynamic database that profiles key epidemiologic findings, and allows the evidence on health effects of exposure to tobacco smoke to be synthesized and updated (following the format of the 2004 report, The Health Consequences of Smoking). The database enables users to explore the data and studies supporting the conclusions in the report. The database is available on the Web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco.
