Past and present mix easily on the Shore, and, in this respect, as well as in certain local customs and habits of language, the region is very much still an old-fashioned English society. Until fairly recently, the peninsula was one of the most geographically isolated regions on the Atlantic coast. In this isolated society, the most important factors have been agriculture, seafaring, and race--a blend of soil, sea, and soul. In his attempt to convey the special character of the region--before accelerating change affects its transformation--John Wennersten has used these themes as a framework for an absorbing narrative. His insights into how these elements affected the development of the area and its current character take the story of the Eastern Shore beyond mere facts and into the realm of socio-cultural history. This is a fascinating overview of an unusual--and perhaps vanishing--lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upshur County, West Virginia was created in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties. Upshur's early history and the lives of its more prominent pioneers and nineteenth-century Native Sons are ably captured in this tripartite volume. Part I, a condensed history of the state prepared by Hu Maxwell, ranges over everything from the first explorations of the Blue Ridge, the French and Indian War, and the Revolution to West Virginia geography and geology, formation of the state, and the Civil War in West Virginia. In Part II, Mr. Cutright lays out the history of the county, with emphasis on the Indian Wars, religious life, geography, formation of the county and its political and governmental institutions, Upshur County and Upshur countians in the Civil War, as well as a whole host of miscellaneous topics, such as turnpike and railroad construction, newspapers, financial institutions, the birds of Upshur County, and much more. In the final third of the volume we find an alphabetically arranged series of over 600 biographical/genealogical sketches of Upshur countians (some of them illustrated), which range from several paragraphs to several pages in length. In the majority of cases the subjects, who were mostly born around mid-century, are identified by their year of birth, the name of one or more parents, and the names of their spouse(s) and children. In addition, we learn something of each subject's career, military service (if any), and his/her movements to and from Upshur County. In short, given the book's 607 densely packed pages of historical and genealogical detail, this is the starting point for Upshur County research.

In twenty-two watercolors and scores of sketches, Iams has given us unforgettably beautiful impressions of these places. Similarly, Thompson's text is a series of impressions, including nature and history, blended with anecdotes gathered from around the pot-bellied stove.

Book excerpt: Originally issued in the prestigious "Rivers of America" series and now again available, here are the beautifully crafted descriptions of the sluggish tidal rivers, never more than a few miles apart, that wind interminably through the rich, flat land of Maryland's Eastern Shore. On their banks stand some of the finest Georgian mansions in the Tidewater area. Footner's evocative text and the pen-and-ink sketches of Aaron Sopher make Rivers of the Eastern Shore one of the most enjoyable works in Maryland literature.

Book excerpt: By 1900 Maryland's Eastern Shore, along the western side of the Delmarva Peninsula, was acknowledged in the national press as a hotbed of baseball activity. By the 1920s the game was fully ingrained into local community life, central to the summer social season among the towns and villages that measured their worth by the quality of their teams. Providing fresh insight into early 20th century baseball at its grassroots, this book explores the Chesapeake Bay region as a case study for the enthusiasm (and hubris) the game brought to rural American life, in context with national trends and influences.

Book excerpt: In the eighteenth century, cash grains were introduced on Maryland's Eastern Shore and eventually replaced tobacco as market crops. What factors brought about this shift from tobacco production to diversified agriculture, and what were its effects on the people living there? This book charts the early social and economic history of the Eastern Shore, focusing on the ways in which Atlantic commerce shaped the lives of English settlers between 1620 and 1776. Professor Clemens is concerned with the relationship between changes in society brought about by local economic circumstances and those created by international market conditions. He also points out the distinctive balance between commercial agriculture and self-sufficiency farming that was achieved on the Eastern Shore. Offering a new perspective on early American history, his book not only depicts the growth of a particular region in colonial America but places that growth in the broader context of both the Atlantic market economy and the economies of other English New World settlements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a former Maryland attorney comes the true crime story of accused murderer Orphan Jones—a case mired in the racism and politics of 1930s America. Euel Lee, alias Orphan Jones, was an African American accused of murdering his white employer and family over a single dollar. The tumultuous events and cast of characters surrounding the racially charged crime garnered national media attention and changed the course of Maryland history. With exacting research, former Maryland State’s Attorney Joseph E. Moore reconstructs the murders, the ensuing roller coast of a trial, and the eventual conviction and execution of Orphan Jones. Moore details all of this in the context of Jim Crow politics and American society during the Great Depression in this gripping true crime account. “The Euel Lee case as explored by Joe Moore is more than good, readable, local history. It is about the stresses and strains in American society in the Depression, from the radicalism of a young Communist lawyer to the conscious efforts of a rural community to contain violence, confront or at least deal with their prejudices and see that justice was served for a senseless murder in their midst. Moore sets a high standard of factual accountability and entertaining narrative based upon oral history and archival research. General readers and scholars alike will not be disappointed.” —Edward C. Papenfuse, PhD, Maryland State Archivist and Commissioner of Land Patents

Book excerpt: "In September 1861 the men of Company A enlisted for three years in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Initially their regiment was intended to serve on the Eastern Shore of Maryland as Home Guard. On August 16, 1862, those men were discharged after only eleven months of service. Some claim that their discharge was the result of the men's refusal to cross the state line into Eastern Virginia. A Year in the Guard attempts to disprove that claim. The story of Company A begins with their enlistment and encampment in Cambridge, Maryland, and follows them through their participation in the invasion into Eastern Virginia. Their duties and camp life are illustrated through newspapers and personal accounts, while military records suggest that the men in fact did not refuse orders and were honorably discharged. A Year in the Guard is a work that sheds light on a previously unexplored aspect of Delmarva history."--

Its publications present literary, scientific, historic, journalistic, environmental, and public policy writings of the Chesapeake Bay region. As publisher for Washington College, the press also publishes scholarly monographs written by faculty or taken from lecture series at the college. In addition, Literary House Press publishes works of literary merit without regard to subject or setting. To the uninitiated the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay connotes images of a water-riddled, flat landscape. This guide-book expands on these primary features with anecdotal entries on dozens of places to go and things to see along the way. Former Eastern Shore correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, Corddry combines a reporter's eye for observation with a passionate interest in the people and history of the region. She writes as much for the wanderer as for the destination-bound traveler, covering cities and towns from Ocean City and Salisbury to the northern areas of Kent and Cecil counties.
